Wouw! Wat lees ik nu? De naam van de cameravrouw gaat rond. Ze liep hem al dagen belachelijk te maken. Ze is de songwriter van Israël. Als dat waar is! 🤢

Two years on and there are still no APIs to adapt your iPad app to better support or drive Stage Manager 🤷‍♂️

vmachiel,
@vmachiel@mastodon.nl avatar

@stroughtonsmith isn’t it clear you ought to give up on the iPad? It’s just for watching videos in bed or on the couch, and that’s fine. Just get a cheaper one, ignore the expensive ones.

Good news! iPad will join the sideloading and alternate app stores club

@stroughtonsmith @macrumors meh. I just want delta in the App Store.

vmachiel,
@vmachiel@mastodon.nl avatar

@stroughtonsmith @jeroen @macrumors CTF for App Store apps needs to go as a bare minimum. This “all your apps are in or out of the new terms” is just.. let’s say wrong to be nice.

Woke up to see @delta is now the #1 app in the entire App Store!! In less than 12 hours!!!

I feel like I’m dreaming 🥹

@cliophate @apollon @rileytestut why not release it in App Store as well?

the New York Times is now running op-eds insisting Joe Biden is unpopular in another country. (The only current polling the op-ed cites in support of its core premise shows Irish people prefer Biden to Trump by a 50-14 margin.)

@foser @gruber as an outsider, why would the NYT run stuff like this? Republicans allow you to make more money?

I wonder if we'll see more details about a minor Rivian R1 refresh now that the R2 and R3 are announced. Things like a NACS progress update, V2H, and a heat pump would be awesome

@christianselig still no CarPlay cause “we know better” though.

It looks like Apple is rapidly finding out all the ‘and/or’s in the DMA were ‘ands’ not ‘ors’. Apple had bet their entire compliance plan on those being ‘ors’.

Now Apple is enabling web-based sideloading alongside third-party app stores

vmachiel,
@vmachiel@mastodon.nl avatar

@stroughtonsmith @ChanceHMiller so, I’m a not a dev or anything and I think its overal a good thing the EU is forcing more openness.

My one concern: won’t Facebook pull an app like WhatsApp and force you to use their web distribution one that’s filled with more tracking etc. Won’t companies make their apps worse for users and force us to use those versions?

I hope my point is clear (English is not my first language), and I’m just trying to be devils advocate here. Do you see this happening?

vmachiel, to random

@caseyliss Can I bother you for one ffmpeg question just to compare? Assuming you convert stuff into h265 using the libx265 codec: do you use the -crf option to set a certain quality? I tried going up quality wise from the default (28) a bit (like 25 or 23) but I didn’t notice the improved quality at all and the files were so much bigger..

We have been able to independently survey the state of popular apps coming to the Apple Vision Pro – either in compatibility mode or as native apps.

As of today the results (coming straight from the App Store API) are pretty concerning. We found no native apps and a lot of companies that manually opted out of compatibility mode. That includes Spotify and YouTube.

We hope this will change soon. Our results and compiled list: https://www.macstories.net/news/a-survey-of-popular-apps-currently-compatible-with-apple-vision-pro/

vmachiel,
@vmachiel@mastodon.nl avatar

@viticci because we all want the next big thing, it’s hard for us to say this might not be it. This might not be it.

Who is gonna wear this thing for long periods of time? Literally cutting yourself off from reality? It’s a cool demo.. but is that enough?

The apps are just floating screens. Again cool, not a new paradigm.

Even after all the delays, the product is still rushed as per your findings.

My M3 Max Macbook Pro is all setup. A clean build of Pedometer++ on my M2 Max was around 21.8 seconds, on M3 it is now 15.2. Which is pretty much exactly in line with @jsnell's benchmarks (https://sixcolors.com/post/2023/11/m3-macbook-pro-review-peak-performance/), and a most welcome improvement.

Though I am sad to have to say goodbye to these lovely stickers my daughter chose to put on my M2 from @ismh's calendar set. I guess I'll have to wait to see what the 2024 calendar stickers are like.

vmachiel,
@vmachiel@mastodon.nl avatar

@_Davidsmith do you sell or keep the old machines? (I’m not buying)

paul, to random
@paul@tapbots.social avatar

M3 Pro is (very slightly) faster than the M2 Pro. Not worth upgrading to, but hey at least its not a downgrade.

vmachiel,
@vmachiel@mastodon.nl avatar

@paul but the positioning of that chip for the future is. Less bandwidth, less P cores vs E cores.. it’s way too close to the regular now. It was the sweet spot for me, but they want me to pay that max price…

vmachiel,
@vmachiel@mastodon.nl avatar

@paul hmm I’d like the pro to be closer to the max. The max is just so damn expensive..

And there is no max for my Mac mini🙂. Guess I’m making this m2 pro one last!

vmachiel,
@vmachiel@mastodon.nl avatar

@paul yeah.. and maybe that would come with the expected memory bandwidth of 200 instead of the 150 we got..

stroughtonsmith, to random

The legacy iTunes library components of Apple Music have made the whole product such a mess that I kinda don't want to use it anymore. I have duplicates, triplicates of so many albums, tracks split across partial albums, canonical albums mixed between explicit and non-explicit, regular, remastered, 2019 edition (remastered), (bonus track version) — I hate it all, and I've wiped it and started over twice.

vmachiel,
@vmachiel@mastodon.nl avatar

@stroughtonsmith thank you! I’m never buying Apple Music because I don’t want anything messing with my library and the associated files.

marcoarment, to random

First plausible M3 tests are hitting Geekbench, presumably from press-review units: https://browser.geekbench.com/search?q=M3

Single/multi-core:

M3: ~3000/~11,700 (if these are real)
M2: ~2600/~9700
M1: ~2300/~8300

Looks great! A 30–40% improvement over three years is remarkable, especially for such a low-power and low-cost chip.

(No Pro or Max scores yet.)

vmachiel,
@vmachiel@mastodon.nl avatar

@marcoarment I’m sad the pro is nerfed. (Less mem bandwidth, less performance cores). It’s too close to the regular M chip now, while it was the sweet spot for mee before.

Pushing people to the max?

_Davidsmith, to random
@_Davidsmith@mastodon.social avatar

I'm delighted to see that the M3 Max now has four extra Performance Cores (12 vs the M2 Max’s 8). I very regularly see Xcode pegging all of my available cores so having 50% more of them can only do good things for my development cycle time.

vmachiel,
@vmachiel@mastodon.nl avatar

@_Davidsmith but: Pro has Lower memory bandwidth then M2 Pro AND less performance cores…

stroughtonsmith, to random
@stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social avatar

Can't wait to spend €4000+ on a headset with the old chip with half the GPU power 😅

vmachiel,
@vmachiel@mastodon.nl avatar

@stroughtonsmith then don’t! Never buy a gen 1 product🙂

paul, to random
@paul@tapbots.social avatar

M3 4/4
M3 Pro 6/6
M3 Max 12/4

So I guess M3 Pro is a downgrade/sidegrade from the M2 Pro. Max is a nice upgrade from the old stuff.

As someone who doesn't care about GPU performance I'm slightly annoyed at having to spend the fancy GPU tax to get the better CPU.

vmachiel,
@vmachiel@mastodon.nl avatar

@paul it’s to replace the touchbar model. It’s fine. Companies want something cheap, and employees want a Pro in the name.
