A dishwasher tip specifically for those of you in North America:

Your dishwasher expects to be filled with hot water. If it takes more than 15 seconds for the water at your kitchen tap to get hot, your dishwasher may be washing with cold water for much of its cycle.

If your dishwasher seems kinda meh, try running the kitchen tap until it's proper hot and steamy before you start a wash cycle. It may make a huge difference.

@alda @chloeraccoon @rail @TechConnectify ok I'm kinda intrigued by having municipal hot water - what is the source?

I have always thought ideally I'd want to see the nuclear power plants we really need more of feed a heat exchanger system that supplies municipal hot water, instead of just dumping the waste heat to cooling towers or ground/sea water

Bad idea: a modernized s-100 computer built around pci-e slots

vxo,
@vxo@digipres.club avatar

@foone I swear I once remember having some motherboard that supported a special variant of AGP for which I never saw a single GPU that matched it - the connector was extra long and had a bunch of power-only pins beyond the normal AGP slot. It was sufficiently weird.

Watch as every manufacturer decides to put the AGPe pins in a different position

After spending nearly an hour trying to get DLNA or Plex working, I have decided that the only reliable way to make video appear on a TV screen is to record it to a VHS tape

Yay! I just got a really great deal on a bunch of these, for around $0.15 each. This will be very useful for mounting LED bargraphs.

@ve7fim I saw some neat old boards once that had TIL311's in those sockets. It was SWANK.

@foone that first picture looks like what I call Rainbow Death Snow when it appears on HD-SDI video sources that have Become Unhappy

Feed it to a Harmonic Electra X encoder and you receive... a Harmonic Electra X non-encoder, until you reboot it and are subjected to the longest five minutes of your entire life as you're dead in the water and off air

@North that reminds me way too much of a capacitor inside the connector bodge you have to do if you are using Sennheiser lav mics on Lectrosonics wireless packs. It has to fit INSIDE the TA5F. Not recommended.

ugh. I have to install a server, and the only display I have I can use for the task is a 4k monitor.

I hate this. my eyes are already hurting just thinking of the tiny, tiny text

vxo,
@vxo@digipres.club avatar

@foone oh I've run into one weirder: we have some little field monitors around at work (ikam brand or--? I forget) where they have HDMI inputs that will accept 4K video and downscale it to whatever the small 7" or so panel actually is

Welcome to Fly Dirt Console.
Good luck!

@foone I cracked up laughing when I saw it happen. Fortunately all I needed was the IP address of the machine I'd plugged it into, but out of curiosity I opened up nano and it looked hilariously sparse.

well fuck ('s legal team) that's stupid as hell.

A hyper-edited video of her saying "now put it in the oven for 350 hours at 3 degrees" does not harm your (fuck all copyright btw) and is obviously due to being transformative and useless as a replacement of the original work

IES really, really, really sucks. They suck harder than the suction inlet on a 15 horsepower centrifugal chiller. They suck so hard the cold dark vacuum of space keeps getting jealous. They suck bosons out of the fabric of the universe.

They specified a York condenser for the server room at work that does not have the low temperature operation option so when it got to 32 degrees outside, it shut down and started letting everything roast.

Pulling the outside air temp probe makes it run again.

vxo,
@vxo@digipres.club avatar

This is actually the SECOND issue with the temp probes the thing has. The first one that disabled it at random was that it has another probe on the compressor suction line that detects if the unit is freezing up and shuts it off. That one failed open circuit and the controller software turned it off.

This whole thing needs to become an artificial reef

vxo,
@vxo@digipres.club avatar

@C8H10N4O2 coil freezing would really only happen if this thing was a heat pump with reverse cycle. it is not. it's just one-way, cool only, because it's yeeting the heat from several million dollars worth of garbage tier supermicro servers and 40 year old distribution amps, and an sdi video router that could, in and of itself, heat the whole-ass building

vxo,
@vxo@digipres.club avatar

@C8H10N4O2 oh yeah that's just the weather saying F.U.

It occurs to me I've actually experienced that too when I was at a transmitter site in heavy fog/mist where the outdoor temp was hovering right at the freezing point. Three mini split systems just became solid chunks of ice on me

vxo,
@vxo@digipres.club avatar

@C8H10N4O2 reminds me of the stories I heard of this one datacenter in downtown Miami... they had fully redundant backup power to everything but the HVAC.

Miami is also known for frequent, hours long power outages for absolutely no good reason.

I called it the Server Sautee House. Rumor has it that after a few big failures, the paint started falling off the interior walls.

    So I've got a fun thing that my roommate got at an e-waste place, and I'm gonna open it up and see how it works and if I can interface with it.

    It's... a crosswalk button/speaker!

    vxo,
    @vxo@digipres.club avatar

    @foone does the documentation mention a password? I just remember when a bunch were installed in North Bay Village, across from the WSVN studio, and they all periodically said "change password!".

    If it were working you'd also get a nice haptic feedback thump from the button after pressing it. As I recall if you continued touching it, it'd make a series of thumps to signal that the walk sign is on for someone who cannot see or hear the signals!
