ChatTMBG should be a thing.

So, am I reading this right?

It seems to be claiming:

  1. Unless my ISP somehow authorizes email to be sent from my IP, Gmail will now bounce it.
  2. Unless I am hooked up with an email service that somehow has clout with Google, Gmail will bounce it.

Since the "ISP" through whom I am attempting to send mail is , I find item #1 to be dubious. They are not blocking my outgoing mail port, and I have no problems sending to most recipients (Google and Microsoft being the only exceptions I'm aware of).

DigitalOcean seems to encouraging its users to use a 3rd-party service -- but I'm already paying them for hosting, and managing my own email service; I don't want to pay yet another service just for the privilege of being allowed to send messages to Gmail's increasingly walled garden.

Is it time to formally ?

woozle,

@twipped I don't know, actually. I was having trouble with DKIM and DMARC; I remember getting one of them configured right (or so I thought at the time), but not being able to figure out how to do the other one -- I'd spent something like a week on it and had to move on to more urgent tasks.

I would definitely have focused on that as an issue, if anything in the error message had suggested it might be -- but the error message implies it's an IP block issue, and the page to which it links seems to confirm this and also states unambiguously that there is no way to get unlisted.

That is the main thrust of my gripe, at this point: either it's actually a configuration issue and they're giving out a very misleading error message, OR they now block by default with no unblocking process.

woozle,

@andrewt We have to draw a line somewhere.

woozle,

@twipped DKIM remains Dark Magic, as far as I can tell.

I think maybe that was the one where it wanted a subdomain entry with a certain name, but DigOc wouldn't let me do it. I did find "how to" docs on DigOc, but they presumed a very different kind of setup around which I was unable to wrap my head in the time available.

woozle,

@twipped I would consider sending through Gmail except I thought they closed off that option for nonpaying customers.

woozle,

@twipped Given how confusing this apparently is to not-just-me, you'd think there'd be some kind of configurator utiility out there -- plug in your domains/IPs, select options, and then it pops out with instructions on what you need to do.

woozle,

@kingannoy There are better solutions that Google could implement; this is a failure on their part.

I'd be very interested in hearing about other hosts that don't suck. I've had other minor issues with DigOc, and it'd be nice to find a host that at least had fewer of them.

Best explanation I've seen of why the Paradox of Tolerance is no paradox at all.

woozle,

@shacker source for the cited inspiration: Tolerance is not a moral precept

important IT concept: sandwich code (code written whilst eating a sandwich)

woozle,

@msh And then we can always ask code vendors: do you eat your own sandwiches?

woozle,

@JenLucPiquant I'm relieved to see that BlueSky is claiming that their protocol will be "open" -- I have to hope/assume they mean that in the usual sense, rather than some kind of corporate doublespeak -- but in that case, what I still don't understand is why they felt they needed to develop a new protocol at all. If they don't like ActivityPub, there's Zot and Friendica and Diaspora...

Someone needs to rewrite Monopoly™ to allow tenant revolt as a gameplay mechanic.

I'm sorry but this is just the funniest shit ever.

These losers were mad that celebs had checkmarks and they didn't. Now they can buy the same checkmark and they're mad that the celebs won't.

I got told the other day, by someone who doesn't live in this country, that things probably aren't as bad as I think they are.

I'm white het cis male. They are almost certainly even worse than I already know, and I know a lot.

I don't think @GeofCox was arguing for it; he was saying that centrism is the most ideological position of all, because it would make an argument like this.

...at least, I hope I'm reading that right.

@oliphant

woozle,

So it's basically just literal conservatism (as opposed to movement conservatism, which is more regressive and authoritarian): "let's keep things the same as much as possible, because any change will make things worse somehow".

@GeofCox @InayaShujaat @oliphant

woozle,

@GeofCox @InayaShujaat @oliphant

This, I'd say, is why it's very important to do everything we can to counter the false narratives put out by the Right.

woozle,

@InayaShujaat

We are very much on the same page about this. "Centrism", as I see it, is wanting to please everyone by compromising everything -- the worst possible outcome.

(There are times when reasonable compromise is possible and even desirable, but averaging two positions as a default solution is just not a good take.)
