What frustrates me is that it's entirely possible to write an external app to do post-migration. it wouldn't have to run on the same server or even be in the same language (Masto is written in Ruby). I just haven't had time...

(The one catch is that I'm not sure if the API allows backdating new posts -- but that could be ameliorated by adding a header or footer indicating that the post was migrated, and its original timestamp.)

Short on guards? Why not recruit high school kids?

That's exactly what the Department of Corrections is doing. Our friends at the Marshall Project take us inside a classroom in Palestine:

apparently this year right-wingers are using pictures of children walking past groups of naked people at presumably a pride parades to show how harmful they are for children and i'm just 🤦🏻 they will never learn that nudity and sex are not the same thing, will they?

i have been to plenty of FKK spaces as a child, where every single person of every age was naked. those are not super common anymore, but to this day, in my country it is perfectly acceptable to let little children run around completely naked at public swimming pools and such. a very popular children's movie i used to love as a kid also featured a scene of butt-naked men running around. yes, you could see their dicks. i have never seen anyone call to ban that movie.

because the naked human body is not harmful for children. it is not inherently sexual.

normally i don't care much what these assholes are saying, but this trend worries me. i don't want to import this puritan body policing from the US, please.

rmpf i am annoyed because i would like to put my second account on a not-mastodon instance (friendica looks nice and i do love the compatibility) but there isn't one that corresponds to the topic of the account. yes, i am starting to see why so many people on the fedi are annoyed by the way that mastodon has taken over when it's really… not the best of the available tools

woozle,

@skye I need to try setting up Friendica again. I ran an instance ages ago... and Masto is only now catching up with some of the to-me-essential features Fka already had back then.

I may be looking for work again soon. I thought there was a commitment on the project to see it through to the planned delivery-date in September, but it's now looking very iffy as to whether that commitment remains in effect.

At least now (for the moment, anyway), I still have some current employment I can point to.

Any leads on work? (I now also have some experience with Laravel, Vagrant, and Pest.)

🤯 This year in social media is wild. The latest chapter is no exception. Fascinating data and anecdotes.

Data:

  • Over 430K Fediverse accounts created in the past week. And it's accelerating.

is run on a "pay what you can, if you can" model as well. I've been running it that way since the start of 2018, and I don't foresee burnout becoming a problem; it's a matter of being able to nurture a supportive community and (most importantly) being willing to delegate tasks rather than... well, the alternatives.

I've lost count of how many "I quit" admins I've tried to contact to ask if they'd like someone to take over managing their site (temporarily or permanently), and the answer is always* no (when they bother replying at all). ...so I have to say I'm a tad suspicious of the idea that burnout was ever the real problem.

Yay!

On Wednesday, Parliament approved new rules for the design, production and waste management of all types of batteries sold in the EU.

With 587 votes in favour, nine against and 20 abstentions, MEPs endorsed a deal reached with the Council to overhaul EU rules on batteries and waste batteries. The new law takes into account technological developments and future challenges in the sector and will cover the entire battery life cycle, from design to end-of-life.

Key measures foreseen by the regulation:

[...]

  • Designing portable batteries in appliances in such a way that consumers can themselves easily remove and replace them;

honestly while we’re at it, let’s just revive too, why shouldn’t we? because that’s the thing about free software, isn’t it? you can’t kill it. it’s literally not possible as long as the code is still available somewhere.

so bringing THAT back at the same time as they try to repeat their strategy, that would really drive the point home, wouldn’t it?

so, who here knows any good XMPP servers? or is the kind of person who can just set one up on a whim?

woozle,

@skye I've been running a Prosody server mainly just for @Harena and myself for... maybe a decade now?

It's kind of limited in what it can do, but the fact that I've never once had trouble with it (and sometimes even forget I'm running it) seems to say something.

We've even recently started using it more often since I've been working upstairs because Pidgin (XMPP client) makes a very distinct sound, which means I'm more likely to notice it when H messages me.

...and yeah, Gtalk used to federate with it. Eff those wankers.

I would have preferred to work out some conditions* under which we would allow Meta to connect with our fedi, but perhaps it's best to come out of the gate with a big "NO" and not waste time working out terms when Meta probably doesn't see us as worth negotiating with any more than one would try to negotiate with a housefly.

...well, ok, be fair: I often do attempt to negotiate with houseflies before I deal with them more harshly, but I think you know what I mean. (They never listen, so the consequences are kinda on them, so to speak.)

@vantablack Where's that form again? I'll sign on, and only reconsider if there's substantial disagreement from our users.

  • I can go into detail, but the ideas I had were very much not softball and would ensure that Meta would actually be contributing to the long-term health of fedi as a commons, rather than preying on it.

I have to wonder what it is that all these ad-bots get from creating accounts that they never do anything with. Is it just so some PR firm can truthfully(ish) say to their clients "We've obtained presence for you on over 10,000 social media sites!" where like 9900 of those are different fedi instances, and the customer is sufficiently unwoke to accept this at face value? Or is there something else behind it?

(P.S. I'm going to start using "unwoke" as a synonym for "clueless"; pass it on.)

Is @tenacity only supporting Windows now? I went to the downloads page via a button which had a penguin-icon among the others, but it only had source-code and Windows downloads.

woozle,

@andOlga If that's the case, then the "download" button ought to link there, I'd think.>.<

woozle,

@tenacity Aha, excellent! Thank you for the quick action on this.

When I click on the link, it shows the file's contents in the browser, rather than downloading them by default -- I'm guessing there's no way to configure a Git page to handle that differently, but fortunately it's simple enough to right-click and select "download link" instead of just clicking.

(I did download it that way, and verified that when I open the file it brings up the Software Boutique and, after a few seconds, offers to install Tenacity.)

Thanks again!

Is it more humane to indict a pumpkin suddenly, or to lessen the pain by letting him stew for a couple of weeks first?

woozle,

@riley I think the most humane thing would be to humiliate him slowly over the course of many weeks, inflicting a fresh mortal wound every day, until finally sentencing him just before he expires from constantly complaining about how the liberals are just out to get him.

(Most humane for humanity, I mean.

Meanwhile, in Utah ...

Utah officials have pulled the Bible from all elementary and middle school libraries in Davis School District due to it containing "vulgarity or violence," according to local media outlet KSL.

[...]

The 2022 law, which is also called the Sensitive Materials in Schools Act, bans books with "pornographic or indecent" material from schools and school libraries.

The parent in the complaint said that the Bible contains "incest, onanism, bestiality, prostitution, genital mutilation, fellatio, dildos, rape, and even infanticide," according to The Salt Lake Tribune.

This statement on AI is buying into the longtermist/effective altruism philosophy that is really problematic. If AI poses an existential risk it's because of the people who make AI. "AI" is just a computer program. If Sam Altman et al really believe the risk they should, y'know, stop developing it, and, more importantly, stop profiting from it. Also, let's focus on the problems being caused by AI right now, the ones that a bunch of the signatories here have profited from (and will continue to).

If you’re picking up on some sarcasm this morning, I have a good friend of mine who is literally one of the most famous people in a certian industry who just quit Mastodon.

She is trans. She’s an extremely nice person that doesn’t do well with conflict when it’s personal.

Why did Mastodon get mad? She forgot alt-text once and she didn’t think it was reasonable to get yelled at over some extremely mild posts on Trans healthcare as “political.”

woozle,

@briannawu I would add that Masto/fedi doesn't deal well with celebrity. I remember all to well when Wil Wheaton was hounded off -- over a similarly minor issue.

Yes, this is a thing which needs fixing. (I have ideas for fixing it, but inadequate coding resources to implement them anytime in the forseeable future.)
