Okay, I looked at this, and this is the same info I have seen other places. I tried it again, and still doesn't work.

My creds for do work for other tools. I can read/write to the space without issue.

Hmmm..

Quick & exciting recap of today:

  • We released version 0.3.0 of Chisel Operator, our FOSS inlets-operator competitor, allowing you to easily reverse-proxy to your local cluster. It now supports integration with cloud providers for automatic provisioning, starting with , , and .

  • We released version 0.2.0 of Submarine, our bootloader for Depthcharge/Chromebooks. This release adds initial support for ARM Chromebooks, starting with the mt8183 SoC.

  • Our first hardware product is currently in R&D. While we're making rapid progress, we're not 100% ready to share what this product is.

  • Plus, much much more :3

Wonder how you all feel, but ’s takeover of @csstricks has left quite an aftertaste.

Felt this strongly when just evaluating . I enjoyed the test, will keep it in mind, but I did ask their team now whether DigitalOcean was actually committed to Cloudways.

Wouldn’t be surprised if that strategy of buying and dropping websites, services, and tooling—that not only DigitalOcean engages in—can backfire, tremendously.

I set up my own Mastodon server. I've got a project in mind for it, it's not for general use so I won't publicise it yet.

I have to say … it wasn't easy? I went with DigitalOcean's easy one-click install and some of the instructions/documentation were out of date and confusing. I got as far as the site working and being up and running but I wasn't an admin.

I got it all sorted out anyway. Mastodon and its future are very important to me and I hope to be part of it in a much more engaged way as a contributor.

The sample is from Oct 29th, the sample will favour English speaking servers. There was a total of 1495 servers seen. These are the top 25 most common AS seen.

First is , then @cloudflare, then Hetzner, , , and . There is a very long tail of hosting providers so there could be a mashup of AS names from a single host.

That thing do with using a custom CA certificate for databases is really fucking annoying.

thisismissem,
@thisismissem@hachyderm.io avatar

First experiences of 's managed App platform is not fantastic at all. Defaults to Node.js 16.x which is EOL, when you create an application database and database user, it defaults to not having the appropriate permissions, so you've gotta add your own IP Address as a trusted source, then connect via psql and issue a bunch of comments.

Also it's unclear what I'm meant to do with the app spec? Am I meant to commit that to repo?

🤔 While I like fly.io, I think they are encouraging/pushing people to use Server-Side SQLite because their managed Postgres support is hot garbage. 🗑️

I say this as someone who is a member of three orgs that have had severe Postgres database issues with their managed service. Support was not even remotely helpful.

I was even forced to pay $29 to get support for one of my personal projects just to be told they could not help me.

❌ Do not trust their databases.

@webology @kedare @carlton we use PostgreSQL (and Redis) managed instances in Digital Ocean and they work pretty well, are stable, easy to configure (e.g. replica, pool, ...), are cheaper then AWS and they don't have strange name for PostgreSQL. 😉

Just had to restore my own from a week-old backup after having lots of problems while trying to the new Mastodon 4.2.0 update. Thank goodness for back-ups! 😪

I admit I'm not quite familiar with updating Ruby, Node.js, NPM and Yarn, but I am learning. As I'm on 4.1.7 currently, I'll try updating to 4.1.8 and then 4.1.9 first before updating to 4.2.0 as mentioned in https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/releases/tag/v4.2.0 👍

Got any tips for upgrading? Do let me know!

I'm not sure if this will be interesting to anyone, but I am going to start posting some stuff about my first time home lab / home web hosting experiences.

It started out as "oh I'll just throw up a simple fediverse server" that has turned into a collection of worksheets, diagrams and tutorials as I learn everything from scratch.

Spinning up a @spacehost, @mastohost or instance is so much faster and cheaper, highly recommended.

But I'm learning alot!

micahilbery, to mastodon

Well, I'm on a digital ocean droplet now. I liked having my own hardware but my home connection and power just aren't reliable enough for my mastodon account to live there. I use my mastodon as my primary social media and kinda rely on it for keeping up with the world. But I also want to own it. So I'll find less mission critical uses for my home server.

I really wish I had the knowledge and experience to run a fully hosted Mastodon instance.

There's so many things you can do being fully hosted that you can't do otherwise, and those things can often really add to an instance.

Sadly, I wouldn't even know where to begin to get a fully hosted instance up and running, much less keep it running smoothly at all times.
