Jan 6. MC POV: What would you ask a Genie if you weren’t sure how they’d interpret your words & believed they might trick you?

Ian: Absolutely fuckin' not. You think I'm some stund-arse? I'm not fallin' for that.

Dec23. If you were to rewrite the nativity, what would you change?

I feel like it's already been aptly done by Everett Patterson (https://commongoodmag.com/the-story-behind-the-viral-jose-y-maria/) and the Banksy comic (https://www.mic.com/articles/94386/12-brilliant-cartoons-that-will-help-you-understand-the-history-of-israel-and-palestine). I'm not Christian, don't much care for Christmas, but these are both quite powerful.

A painting (???) by Banksy (allegedly). Mary and Joseph on their way to Bethlehem with the glowing star in the sky, but the Apartheid Wall is in the way.

@zillanovikov and I run an author interview feature on our blog. We need more interviews ... If you've got a "published" work (anything readers can interact with, so pre order links or Royal Road links or Wattpad links count, and if course so does Amazon links or smashwords links) please consider doing it!

@Firlefanz @zillanovikov Hi Hannah! Just send us the completed interview (along with relevant links, of course). We will lightly edit it (or I guess more heavily edit it if required, but usually people who write books are also good at writing interview responses).

7 Dec: Do you use foreshadowing?

Quite clumsily, I'd imagine. My Google Docs versions are full of comments saying "FORESHADOWING" from both me and my betas.

Do you write under your own name? Do you share a name with another writer?

Funny story. Like the egomaniac I am, I wanted to write under my own name to brag about it to IRL people. When my publisher did a search, though, it turns out that there is another Rachel Rosen writing MILF erotica. I obviously don't want to be confused with her, and that's why I use an initial.

141 — Do you see writing as a kind of therapeutic (or even spiritual) practice?

Sure. I murder people in fiction so that I don't do anything awful in real life.

I don't think it's a substitute for actual therapy though.

135 — MC or SC POV: Is there anything you're ever a snob about?

Ian, gesturing first at the dusty back room of a carpet store, crowded with under-showered revolutionaries, and then at himself, a gaunt skeleton in a tattered long coat with a gas mask hanging around his neck. "Do I looks like a snob to you, b'y?"

#WritersCoffeeClub If you find you've used a name from a famous novel, do you change it?

I posted before the coffee really kicked in this morning and I just realized that I share a name with a character from a famous story—Rachael Rosen in "Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep." Since I was born with it, there's not much to be done, except play it up for sci-fi cred.

Nov 12: Antagonist POV: what food would you serve to your enemy?

Colette: I wouldn't cook anything for my enemies that I wouldn't cook for my family. It's only whole foods here, organic veggies, low carbs, lean grilled meat. Which is harder to get these days under the circumstances. They look like they could use a meal or two.

#WritersCoffeeClub Oct 31: Does your work include any horror elements? What's the most frightening thing you've written? 🎃

I'm not a horror person but I tend to write things with horror elements. I get scared by a different set of things than normal people so horror sometimes happens unintentionally. Probably the scariest thing I've written are Blythe's scenes, which involve a lot of cosmic horror whilst trapped deep underwater.

community! Do you like book boxes? Do you support Doctors Without Borders? Now you can get a book box with a special edition of Instant Classic (That No One Will Read) and a bunch of other goodies, and the proceeds benefit what's now a very urgent cause. (The Amazon books also benefit MSF—basically anything we make over our publishing cost will be donated to them.) Oh yeah, and there are 9 stories in it that are extremely good.

#WritersCoffeeClub Oct 20 - If you read over a quarter of a book and decide you don't like it, do you bail or complete it?

This is one of my quirks—I never bail on a book, even if I hate it. There is always something that can be learned from it. Someone thought this was worth writing and someone thought it was worth publishing, and the gaps between my opinions and those of the industry are always worth exploring.

youseeatortoise,
@youseeatortoise@wandering.shop avatar

@cstross Oh, this is very true (though presumably the author at least thought it was worthwhile). I've done a few swaps with self-pub authors that caused psychic damage.

Oct 19. Have you ever used sensitivity readers and, if so, how was that for you?

Yes, I had an official (paid) sensitivity reader for Cascade. They're Métis and I wanted to make sure that my depiction of my two Métis characters was respectful and realistic. I also checked in with a number of friends from various ethnicities about specific elements of the story.

It's a humbling experience! And it's a lot to ask of another human. But worth it to not fuck up egregiously.

It is simply not possible to evacuate over one million people in 24 hours from the zone of attack in Gaza. The answer to horrific atrocities by Hamas cannot be collective punishment upon an entire population, 50 percent of which are children.

youseeatortoise,
@youseeatortoise@wandering.shop avatar

@georgetakei Being against children dying en masse shouldn't be a radical political statement; in fact, it should not be a political statement at all. It boggles my mind that some folks have the capacity to grieve one set of murders and not the other.

Canadian Council for Civil Liberties rebukes :

Invoking the notwithstanding clause is an admission the government knows its actions will not withstand Charter scrutiny.

The notwithstanding clause is the nuclear option. Using it to destroy the rights of students is unconscionable.

The notwithstanding clause is not a weapon that should be used to strip anyone of their rights, let alone vulnerable and marginalized students.

youseeatortoise,
@youseeatortoise@wandering.shop avatar

@myeyesaredim Why do we have a loophole in our Charter of Rights and Freedoms that allows unscrupulous politicians to violate the rights and freedoms of various marginalized groups again?

youseeatortoise,
@youseeatortoise@wandering.shop avatar

@myeyesaredim it was a rhetorical question. We can’t make legislation assuming Tories will behave themselves.
