What's your WIP about?

Blight is the sequel to Cascade (https://mybook.to/cascade) and the difficult middle child in the Sleep of Reason trilogy.

Three years after a second magical catastrophe transforms the world into a hellscape and with a murderous far-right government in power, the small, scattered resistance movement is handed a rare opportunity when the regime's poster child defects. What follows is a battle for the ruins of civilization and a broken country's soul.

Infosec friends are unanimous: if you're using Chrome, you want to visit chrome://settings/adPrivacy and turn off Ad Topics, Site-Suggested Ads, and Ad Measurement.

IMPORTANT: you must do this for each of your Chrome profiles, since it's not a global setting.

Sep 3: Is there one piece of well-known writing advice you ignore?

All of it, really. Most is given from amateurs to other amateurs based on something their Grade 11 English teacher told them. Did your Grade 11 English teacher write a book?

But my particular bugbear at the moment is hard magic vs, soft magic systems, magic systems being an idea that needs to be nuked from orbit in .

youseeatortoise,
@youseeatortoise@wandering.shop avatar

@kurtseifried @cstross Alas, creative writing is falling by the wayside—along with reading novels—as schools focus mostly on standardized testing.

59 — What is the best piece of advice that your MC has ever been given?

Wear comfortable shoes. It's a long, hard fight. You can't do it in heels.

A person I otherwise deeply respect has remained (very) active on the deadbird site, and is even paying for it, because (the person says) it fulfills a professional need that can't be met elsewhere.

My friend calls it "a deal with the devil." On that, we agree.

I have my share of hypocrisies, and try to manage them carefully. Sticking with a site run by an enemy of journalism and democracy was just too much to stomach.

Journalists should leave. Period.

youseeatortoise,
@youseeatortoise@wandering.shop avatar

@rysiek @dangillmor The dead bird site is also useless (from a newsreader's perspective) for following the news. I was mainly using it for that and I left when I couldn't find anything.

26 If your MC wrote books, what genre would they write? Why?

Maya: Would scrape the serial numbers off her epic-length Night Beats fanfic and publish it.

Ian would write edgy experimental literary fiction but entirely accidentally and when asked would claim that it was what happened last Tuesday.

Blythe would write about the inherent eroticism of the sea.

Jonah would write extremely pulpy Westerns and sword and sorcery.

It upsets me when people speculate despondently that we'll never get rid of covid now, that our chance has passed, when meanwhile we're not even trying for the lowest of low hanging fruit

For example, airplanes should be running their air filtration at max when boarding and deplaning. They don't. They have never done this throughout the pandemic. They can, there's no technical issue preventing them from doing this, they just don't, helping to spread covid variants internationally

Or schools. We've seen studies show that schools are a major vector for the spread of covid (and other airborne diseases!) We've also anecdotally seen many examples of schools that kept covid out completely, either through ventilation and filtration or testing and masking or some combination. Putting air filters in classrooms is dirt cheap compared to disabling students and sickening their households, but it's not even being looked at

They haven't even tried literally pushing a button and are telling us nothing can be done

youseeatortoise,
@youseeatortoise@wandering.shop avatar

@eniko I am fascinated by this! I'm facing career repercussions by still masking at work. I have no windows but 2 HEPA filters in each classroom. I'm told the ventilation in my space is excellent—but not by anyone I trust to know more about these things than I do. The article doesn't say anything about masking or class size either. I lack an engineer's brain or experience and I would literally throw money at someone to do this in my school.

"Penises, Privilege, and Feminist & LGBTQ+ Purity Politics" may be my best essay of 2022 – it explains how heteronormative beliefs about sex & penises shape stereotypes of both bisexuals & trans ppl (including claims that we are "perpetually privileged") within cultural feminist-leaning queer spaces...

I hate how much modern life includes wasting time evaluating middleman companies between you and the service you want to use. Last night I needed to make a hotel booking and ended up in a daze trying to compare the hotel’s website, booking platforms and sites that compare booking platforms. I think I even saw a site comparing the comparison platforms. Every site has slightly different rates, offers and booking terms but ultimately all are for the same standard hotel room.

Same problem getting a phone plan or electricity company. My phone is still largely going through the same phone towers and my electricity from the same power plant even if I pick plans offered by an airline or supermarket for some reason. I wonder how much of what I spend each year goes in profit to middleman companies like these?
