I play strategy games, write software, and stream on Peertube (not necessarily in that order). Also, sock monkeys! Preferred pronouns: he/him/his.

When I got into web development, I just wanted to make silly web pages that did cool things. And this is what the industry has turned into. ๐Ÿ˜ž

I just followed a bunch of peertube instances from my own. I was following one instance (davbot) who had a few users but I wanted to diversify things a bit. I used that thread from @FediFollows to find more places I can follow.

I'm hoping that my main page can sort of become as interesting to browse as, say, YouTube one day, and this is a step in that direction.

"News" headlines courtesy of Google. I heard that crypto companies are in desperate need of cash right now so they'll are pushing out these ad blitzes, so I'm not surprised to see these pop up in my news feeds. Disappointed, but not surprised.

A few years ago, I complained about how bad being on the web was on mobile devices. Website after website had horrible UI controls, insisted on interrupting my reading with ads or some sort of popup asking me to subscribe to their newsletter.

Nowadays, I am pleased to see the mobile web experience finally reach parity with the desktop web experience. Which is to say that desktop is now every bit as bad as mobile.

Progress?

If there's one trend in web application development I've come to loathe it's the concept of eliminating "friction".

Now, don't get me wrong, I think it's beneficial to simplify interfaces, but some have decided to take things to the extreme and go as far as eliminating interfaces altogether.

Go on a website to research contractors to work on your home, for example. You click a link to learn more about them, but instead you go straight to the scheduling assistant.

No, I did not want that.

Want to get technical support for a video game problem you're having issues with? Just leave a negative review that describes the issue you're having on Steam and allow comments to your review.

You'd better believe people will respond with a solution in droves. It works great just as long as you don't mind being called an idiot or some variation thereof.

It still bothers me a little bit that Gmail is dropping support for its simple HTML page. It's like "yeah we'd do that normal markup page for you but we just can't be bothered to."

I think this is going to be the year I just say "to hell with it" and set up my own mail server.

Your periodic reminder that "Generation X", "Millennials", etc aren't really a thing. They are marketing archetypes made up to sell you products by an industry obsessed with segmenting up a population into discreet chunks for the purposes and monetizing perceived generational divides.

To try to use an age group as a way to somehow define your identity is, at best, pointless and at worst plays to the propaganda of an industry seeking to carve us all into digestible groups for them to consume.

I saw someone on here post a little while ago alleging that "Joke Twitter is joining Bluesky, not Mastodon".

I haven't seen that person on here lately. They must have gotten lost with the military jet.

I saw an article that claimed that the software industry's "dirty little secret" was that software engineers "hated" code.

This is absolutely not true. If we hated code we wouldn't have dedicated our lives to a career in writing it. I mean, who comes up with this drivel?

What we do hate is poorly written code.

It's like if an architect looked at a shitty building and said "I hate this", and everyone concluded "Wow, architects really hate designing buildings!"

We had a mostly successful trip to IKEA. They didn't have the one type of shelf in the color I wanted (even though their website said it was in stock) but we managed to get everything else.

How about nobody? Can we just normalize just not having a "winner"?

I left that shit behind on Twitter. I don't need to see it here.

One downside of working remotely is that when you have a day full of meetings, you still end up doing your job while attending the meeting because most meetings are 80% fluff you can ignore. But if you're in-person you have no choice but pay attention.

I say this is a downside because if you're not paying attention then you can miss that important 20%. And it's extremely stressful. ๐Ÿ˜…
