Un Dorian Gray sin pasado, ni patria ni bandera.

I'm just a guy in the who likes going on adventures, and playing games with friends.

Three things I love: the Oxford Comma, irony, and missed opportunities.

I guess habits are automatic where you don't have to go through a checklist to get it done?

I joined Mastodon a couple of times in 2018 but could never make it stick. Coincidentally rejoined last year just before the Twitter implosion, and maybe it was all the new people I was able to start using it in a way that made sense to me and rather enjoyed it, despite not using Twitter.

As soon as the writing was on the wall about the API changes, I created an account on Lemmy and here. That was end of May and the big migration happened end of June.

So tl;dr, I've been aware of it since 2018, but didn't actually start using it until end of 2022.

What's the eye contact one? And how do you teach speed reading?

Increased probability that anything I put down or toss on the bed, etc, will fall off and hit the floor instead. In reality, it's probably just a poor sense of propioception.

I don't know what any of those terms mean, but I support you in this!

I want the 70s to come back in many ways. The colors, the cuts, the flair, the patterns, the length.

For imgur check out Catbox. I haven't used it person, but it might be closer to imgur than pixelfed which is supposed to be an IG replacement.

Plan on getting a Linux laptop: any suggestions?

I’m considering getting a laptop for Linux and want to know a few things before I do. Some important info before I start: I don’t plan on using the laptop for anything too intense, mainly writing, digital art, streaming, browsing, and maybe very mild video editing (cropping at least and shortening at most). I would also...

I got their 12th gen diy last year and it was really easy to assemble. I was pleasantly surprised at how well thought out it was.

I've been using Proton since it first came out and have had no problems with it. I have a paid account because it's worth it to me to not be the product. And for about $5/mo I get encrypted email, calendar, vpn, drive, and password manager (though I primarily only use the first three).

They have a free version that lets you try it out, though with limited features.

OC Really missing a true "save" ability for posts and comments on kbin

I am aware that upvoted posts make it to https://kbin.social/fav however that just doesn't work well as I already have 1,000+ pages in there. Moreover, that only registers upvoted posts and not comments. A workaround would be to just use boost, and only upvote when you want to "save" but that is just not conventional imho. The...

A long time ago, back at the beginning (was that a month ago now?) Ernest posted that the boost button moved a thread to the top of the Active list and added some points for its score on Hot.

I recently got diagnosed with "you're showing signs of it, so let's take the test and see" so I've been poking around places like here. Some of the things on here… damn I feel seen.

Yeah, we're going to need proof re: your user name suspicious Fry glance.jpg

Across the fediverse if you stick an @ in front of the 196 it'll work. Lemmy has a thing where they do an ! instead, but that's specifically their thing.

Works with usernames too.

Bluesky temporarily halts sign-ups because so many people are joining from Twitter (www.theverge.com)

Bluesky, a decentralized Twitter-like social network, is pausing new signups “temporarily” to try and resolve performance issues it’s been experiencing after Twitter introduced limits on the amount of tweets you can see in a day. Even though you still need an invite code to be able to join Bluesky, it seems that the influx...

Since you are the algorithm for what you see instead of the system, you do have to put in some work to find content that interests you. But it is possible and rewarding when you do. Assuming microblogging is of interest to you of course.

Same thing with the various Twitter migrations where they kept trying to turn Mastodon/ Calckey into the new Twitter. I think people like familiarity.

While larger, more general communities are thriving on the Fediverse - I'm missing out on the niche communities

Gaming, news, tech, general literature. All of these are somewhat thriving, with a steady influx of posts and comments. At the same time, the userbase is sorely lacking for more niche communities. In my case it'd be stuff like poetry, yoga, religion, linguistics, meditation. Or many other communities I'd doubt they'd form a...

Don't worry, it'll all make sense in time. There are some great guides floating around if you haven't already found them.

Same, but it's only a matter of time until we get apps. I know some are in development, so some day soon hopefully!

themadcodger,

I've only been on the fediverse just under a year, but generally speaking that's the vibe here in general. Twitter migrants said the same thing after they showed up to Mastodon/Calckey.

And the nice thing is if you do see trolls, don't feed them, just block them and move on. This place is so much less stressful when you remove the bad actors.

themadcodger,
themadcodger avatar

They don't have the same power over here. Especially on kbin where they pretty much equal "thank you for posting" and that's about it. Boosting is where you become the algorithm and say "I think others need to see this!"

themadcodger,
themadcodger avatar

The alt right already knows about the fediverse and has instances out there. But because this place was built with marginalized people in mind, it's easy to make them go away, on an individual level as well as an instance level.

So what happens is they pretty quickly get stuck in their own little corner unable able to interact with the rest of us. I honestly think removing all that negativity and hatred is what keeps this place a generally friendly and welcoming place.

themadcodger avatar

I did! And I'm glad you felt comfortable enough to comment.
