Just have to say this one more time: the whole #Twitter#X thing continues to profoundly upset me. I left in Oct/Nov ‘22 and have been very happy here, but: i had a really good Twitter community of #ClimateActivists and academics and lost it all, because hardly anyone came here. And i do not understand how they are ALL continuing to use an ever more overtly fascist platform, along with majority. The very people who i thought were the good, critical ones. I know i shd accept it but struggle.
With the recent moves from #Twitter, #Reddit, and even #Youtube, I think it’s becoming clear that ads are not a sustainable business model in the long run (and yes, I know I run a YouTube channel funded by ads 😅)
I took a look at a few examples, at how this decline is also making the web worse for everyone, at alternative platforms, and tried to imagine what an internet without ads to fund content creation and big platforms could look like:
Musk was going to push eyestrain-inducing "dark mode" on everyone, then reversed -
First he said he was going to force everyone to use dark mode on #Twitter, which can be unreadable by people with astigmatism and others. I find it almost entirely unreadable. Then after an outcry he reversed and said it would be the default. Such an ass.
These were so-called "financial insecurity" voters.
They could afford to take off work for this trip. Could afford travel costs, lodging, dining, and drinks. Could afford specially printed T-shirts and flags. Could afford cameras, military cosplay accessories, weapons, and ammunition.
Their votes were not about financial insecurity to begin with.
Day 177 and #Twitter users are surprised that #ElonMusk’s decision to remove #bluecheck validation is causing chaos and the creation of impersonation accounts. That could never have been predicted?
#Decentralized#SocialMedia is the solution for exposure to willful and arbitrary behavior by egomaniacal billionaires
I see (and enjoy) a lot of satisfied commentary on the End of #Twitter and the rise of #Mastodon, and I’m very happy here. But if I’m honest, a great part of my former Twitter community is still there. Some of them tried Mastodon early and gave up quickly. None of them can be happy about Musk. Still — is there anything to be done?
Bluesky, a decentralized Twitter-like social network, is pausing new signups “temporarily” to try and resolve performance issues it’s been experiencing after Twitter introduced limits on the amount of tweets you can see in a day. Even though you still need an invite code to be able to join Bluesky, it seems that the influx...
It searches for the patterns @user, user@host.tld and host.tld/@user in the screen name, description, location and URL field. It displays them to you in the correct format for easy copying as well as a CSV download that can be imported to #Mastodon.
It speaks of problematic developments under #ElonMusk and says, that for example #Nazi content is now barely moderated over there. And also that the significance of Twitter shrinks.
I am starting to miss the "hide reply" option from #Twitter. Some of my toots attract reply-guys with their typical negativity that I would really like to remove from some threads to keep the positivity of other replies alive. UPDATE: Or implemented as a Content Warning style option (“Hidden by thread owner/curator”) where the reader has to consciously click to reveal the content.
> Almost exactly six months after #Twitter got taken over by a petulant edge lord, people seem to be done with grieving the communities this disrupted and connections they lost, and are ready, eager even, to jump head-first into another toxic relationship. This time with BlueSky.
tl;dr:
#BlueSky seems designed to get secondarily centralized in the "reach" layer (as they call it)
