@fkamiah17 It won't be debated, by the way. Will be treated as 'not Parliamentary business' and ignored.

@fkamiah17 Yep. And I blocked. I don't need people in my life who think the world has to revolve around them, even when they're politely told that they're wrong.

Been listening to Mary Lattimore's new album (this is not a jukebox Friday thing). It's really quite delightful. My favourite thing she's done in a fair while.

Another for , and of course I can find a calypso song to fit the theme. There's a calypso for everything!

There's usually a calypso for everything from Lord Kitchener, and he does have one where he moans about his mother-in-law (it was the 1950s, okay), but I've gone instead for Mighty Sparrow with My Brother Tommy

RolloTreadway,
@RolloTreadway@beige.party avatar

@fkamiah17 Okay - here is the Kitch calypso about his mother-in-law. Wasn't going to post it because its attitudes are somewhat, um, old-fashioned. But I'm sure everyone can understand it's of its time.

RolloTreadway, to music
@RolloTreadway@beige.party avatar

It would clearly be unacceptable for me to use the theme as an excuse to spam yet more Unthanks at everyone.

Clearly.

...

So, here's Magpie by the Unthanks. A very pared-down Unthanks: just sisters Becky and Rachel, Rachel's husband Adrian and longtime friend Niopha.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6EIFD80f90

(The lineup of the Unthanks changes all the time, depending on what kind of music they want to do, but the Becky-Rachel-Niopha core is always there, and Adrian is invariably involved somehow.)

Meanwhile in :

On a low turnout (37.2%), Labour secured a 20% swing in tis favour to win the beating the SNP by 58% to 27% of the vote... while the crashed to 3.9%.

And, now the reading of the runes can get under way....

Can 'win back' Scotland?

Is this indicative of how the vote might go in a general election?

Does it suggest concerns about 's electoral appeal are miss-placed?

I'm looking forward to the weekend papers

RolloTreadway,
@RolloTreadway@beige.party avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 Probably doesn't suggest a big enough swing to make Labour the largest party in Scotland. But I think twenty seats might be achievable at a push. 10-15 probably more likely.

The Ruth Davidson-era Scottish Tory revival is very likely dead now, though. I was reading something earlier that referred to SNP-Con marginals, and honestly, I'm not sure any of those seats should be considered marginal any more. Can see a 1997-esque wipeout of the Tories outside England.

@fkamiah17 I'm always annoyed at how stories like this are presented. When police arrest peaceful protesters and then release them without charge later on, it's not a mistake or a misjudgement, nor is the release a sign that the system works or anything like that.

Arresting protesters in full knowledge that no crime has been committed has been an established police tactic for decades. It is intended to intimidate and terrorise innocent people. The arrest - usually as aggressive as they can get away with - is the whole point.

Shouldn't be allowed but nothing will ever be done about it. I'm sick of it. And sick of the refusal to treat such actions as what they are: a coordinated attack on innocent members of the public.

From Sam Freedman on the other place:
"After just 24 hours, the government has dropped its commitment to reopen the Leamside Line. It was included yesterday in the initial Network North announcements, now it’s gone.
Roads minister Richard Holden tells me Govt is now just ‘committed to looking into it’.

RolloTreadway,
@RolloTreadway@beige.party avatar

@fkamiah17 Oh ffs. The Leamside Line is a really straightforward one to reopen, an easy win (and in a part of the northeast where the Tories have done okay in the past decade or so).

This is all just bullshit.

This week's is about . I've decided to approach this from a folklore angle, and have (mostly) chosen folk songs, because folklore and folk music are inseparably entwined.

The Unthanks with Julie Fowlis - The Great Silkie Of Sule Skerry
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LabjOVVv9oI
(I've posted this before, but I don't think that's a problem, because it is as beautiful a thing as you'll hear.)

Words of a Fiddler's Daughter - Terrible in his Sorrow
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPEDZ63R5X0
(Taken from The Tears of Jenny Greenteeth, which develops the traditional tale of a malevolent river spirit into a story of a couple destroyed by the drowning of their daughter.)

The Gentle Good - Afon Arian
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTEsiEmvLXI
(Telling a legendary tale of the 8th century Chinese poet Li Bai, in Welsh - Li had previously drank in the company of the moon, and swore to meet the moon again in time; and one evening, he was on a river and saw the reflection of the moon in the silver waters, and the moon showed him an image of his long-distant wife and child, which led Li to reach out and embrace the moon, and to drown.)

Sharon Shannon and Sinéad O'Connor - Annachie Gordon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZPrLu0To8M
(I was unsure about whether to include this, as there is nothing fantastical about a young woman being forced to marry a wealthy older man - but the tale does tell of an oath to die rather than bear the man a child, and the idea of a supernatural death not as tragedy but a way to rescue doomed lovers is a common theme in folklore the world over.)

Erland Cooper ft. Astra Forward and Hiroshi Ebina - Sule Skerry
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uTcwJYjbHY
(Circling back around to the legend of Sule Skerry, because of its importance in Scottish folk ballads. But this is a different song entirely, an original work composed by Erland Cooper. Please listen to the very end, the track doesn't stop when you might expect it to.)
