New sea-surface temperatures are 0.3°C above previous El Nino year 2016, 0.6°C above 1998.

If ocean warming is just top 100 m, and oceans cover 70% of Earth, then that’s the mass of 7 atmospheres.

Because it takes ~4 times more energy to warm a gram of water 1°C than a gram of air,
that ocean warming is the energy that would warm the atmosphere 28 times more.

Equivalence: the atmosphere 8°C warmer than 2016, 16°C above 1998.

I'm rather taken with this elegant visualization of @ClimateChange from the BBC. Particularly as it clearly shows how anomalous 2023 was.

It's a Ridgeline plot (also sometimes called a joyplot, after the iconic album cover from the band #JoyDivision).

I just wish they'd used a pre-industrial average as the baseline. 2023 was 1.48°C warmer than pre-industrial times according to the Copernicus data.
