✨The 1.1 update of my read-later app #Flyleaf is now live on the iOS and macOS #AppStore. It includes some nice quality-of-life improvements, so make sure to grab it!

https://apps.apple.com/app/flyleaf-read-later/id6475200381

New stuff:

  • Add PDFs to parse the contents and show them in the Flyleaf reading view
  • An "unread article count" badge – if you are into that sort of thing
  • Drag-and-drop support
  • A new red theme
  • Bug fixes and performance improvements (of course!)

iPadOS 18 could ship with built-in Calculator app, after 14 Calculator-less years

Imagine making a sophisticated piece of hardware, and yet the news that keeps popping up is how that hardware is missing calculator functions. So much so, that when you do decide to finally make a calculator app for your hardware, it's apparently news.

Can't tell whether this is hilarious or depressing.

A to właśnie z kontrolera ładowania :)

https://imagazine.pl/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/BTC-Vault.png

Wpisałem frazę „portfel bitcoin” w Apple App Store, zainstalowałem pierwszą aplikację, którą zobaczyłem (wyglądała legalnie), przelałem bitcoiny i natychmiast zostały one wysłane donikąd.

Turns out on the Wallflower Beta that Purchases that happened on the TestFlight sandbox are lost in each new version, and beta testers have to re-purchase. No worries, this does not cost money. I thought this was just my account, but it turns out other beta testers have it too. What did I misconfigure? Where?

matt1corey,
@matt1corey@iosdev.space avatar

@gernot subscription durations are shortened dramatically in the sandbox environments, so they can be tested more easily - if this is for a non-consumable IAP, I imagine it’s something similar

10, about half a year in (I think I used the betas?): I think it’s mostly an improvement.

Changing some of the basic interactions is bold, because you’re messing with people’s muscle memory. But I doubt Apple did that lightly. They knew this was a risk. A 10.0 is one of those rare occasions where you get to take the risk.

chucker,
@chucker@norden.social avatar

I still have broken muscle memory with what the watchface gestures do: do I swipe up for Control Center? No, that now gives me widgets. Do I click the lower button for recent apps? No, that now gives me Control Center. Wait, so where do you get recent apps? (For a while, I thought the answer is you can’t any more. Instead, it’s: double-click the crown.) In practice, this means I often do the wrong gestures, undo, then do the right thing. (I’m using “gesture” loosely here.)

max,
@max@smeap.com avatar

@chucker I think this relates to the Widgets side of the watch? Most of the reasons to switch back to a previous app are better embodied as widgets: if I check something in the middle of a workout and want to get back to the workout screen there’s a widget for that; same for Apple Music, generally. (Plus there’s still the old weird tap the top edge but not enough to drag notifications down “last app” gesture.) Most of the cases I need to scroll recent apps are a missing widget, I feel.

macguru17,
@macguru17@objc.social avatar

Okay, I just couldn’t let this rest in my head. I've done a few simple simulations, comparing:

  • relative change in net revenue (what you keep after fees)
  • for developers staying INSIDE the App Store
  • using Apple's In-App Purchases

under the new EU rule compared to the old App Store model.

[a thread]

macguru17,
@macguru17@objc.social avatar

Seeing this, I'm convinced this is an intentionally rigged game and actually also a honey pot. A trap for new developers to sign up for a mode that might (will?) eventually kill them. You cannot revert from this new model.

‼️ The new model requires you to IMPROVE your download to paid ratio as you get MORE downloads.

Everybody will tell you it's usually the opposite. It's impossible to grow and win using these rules. It's like a drug scheme – easy entry but killing you over time.

macguru17,
@macguru17@objc.social avatar

In the end, this is what everybody was expecting Apple to do: don't budge but make new rules that essentially change nothing and just make them more money. Same as in the US for external payment providers.

It's a mathematically hidden way of saying „Fuck You“ to regulators and the industry. Dressing up nicely and acting like your friend, but coming for you once you bite, inescapable. Basically, a trojan horse.

[end]

PS: Happy to hear your thoughts. And please correct me if I'm wrong!

M0CUV,
@M0CUV@mastodon.radio avatar

Apple’s latest 10 really devours battery life :( Significantly worse than previous major version.

kn8cr,

@M0CUV Which is unfortunate. My 8 year old Garmin fitness watch still gets 5 days, which is exactly why I did not go with the Apple Watch.

N2UX,

@M0CUV My experience was the opposite - I have much better battery life under WatchOS 10

y2mango,
@y2mango@mastodon.social avatar

For developers who still want to stay 100% on App Store using Apple’s payment system, the new business terms for EU look like a gamble to me.

If you have a <1M annual install, you can earn more money.

But if your app goes viral, you can go bankrupt after paying the Core Technology Fee.

$500,000 - $50,707 * 12 = ($108,484)

First time I used Codes for promoting my App Wallflower 2 and I have to say it's a great tool. Wonder why I haven't seen this use by other indie devs?!

My app has a subscription for €49/year, but with the code RELEASEWEEK you can get the first 3 months for €10 during this release week.

This is different than Promo codes, way more flexible, you can make up to a million and it's on you how you distribute them. Super useful.

Ever since v10, my heart rate tracking has been mostly broken when I use the fitness app to track a bike ride.

Start the ride, heart rate jumps to double. Stop, it goes back. Start riding again and after 10 minutes, heart rate jumps by 50%, then the heart rate monitor crashes/resets and after 2 minutes, it comes back to normal.

This cycle usually repeats itself 1 more time.
