Graphic Novels

Over the weekend, I started getting into and and got a few of the top suggestions from Reddit and Co. (IN., Limbo, Saga, Daytripper, The Boys).

Do you have any other suggestions that are not your typical Marvel & DC superhero stuff?

@cliophate

Powers - Brian Michael Bendis/Oeming

The Invisibles - Grant Morrison
We3 - Grant Morrison

Planetary - Warren Ellis

If you like The Boys, try Preacher (another Garth Ennis over-the-topper)

I am thinking about pitching a book group, like 4-5 titles, at a group of over-60s I know. “Graphic Novels You Should Have Read.”

And I realized that I’m weak on the topic now, since I don’t go to comic book stores anymore & I didn’t keep up in the general interest bookstore where I worked.

So tell me what you think the best graphic novels up to this very minute are, please and thankudrivethru.

@shannonmcmaster

Daytripper
Mazebook
Upgrade Soul

All three of those should be great for discussion. They may all also chime with people who’ve lived a bit of life, more so than for eg kids!

Damn it – for the second time in four months, Gail Simone has got me shedding real tears in a coffee shop. First time was Variants (the Jessica Jones limited series); I read that in a new-to-me place in Minneapolis. Today, at one of my locals, it was Clean Room (Volume 3 in particular).

@johannesbeers @Lemonandpeach @Sjtaal Glad you liked it, incredible books

mgmarkel,

Small indie are the best. Got introduced to Lynn Ward (1905-1985), who created wordless (the first in the U.S.) & was also an award winning illustrator.

Influenced by his dad (first chairman of the ACLU), and by German expressionist graphic artists. Went on to influence Art Spiegelman, Eric Drooker and others.

Interesting that his Greedy Capitalist looks more monstrous than Frankenstein.

Black and white image of sneering top hatted swell before a crowd, holding up a picture.

ablueboxfullofbooks,

The leaves are turning red. The temperatures are cooler ! Fall is in the air and Look ! The Mailman dropped the October surprise mail from ! How exciting ! What book do you think is hidden inside ? A small clue : it is a middle grade graphic novel recently published !

@bookstodon

thecalchemist,

Adam McGovern’s “Nightworld: Midnight Sonata” is a fantastic, four-issue trade paperback in a Jack Kirby style. The main character Plenilunio has made a deal with the devil, in order to grant himself and the woman of his dreams an infinity together. But she was swept away, and he was made into a shadow of his former self. Now, he must find himself and fight alongside some unlikely allies to restore things as they should be. But can this master of the shadows truly overcome the darkness within? An excellent psychodrama that draws the reader into a world different from and yet much like our own.

A spread from Nightworld, a two-page display of a soul boiler in Hell.
A spread from Nightworld, a one-page display showing Plenilunio plunging down from a dark sky in front of a full moon.

Hey @bookstodon Comics/Graphic Novel/Manga lovers, Here are some reads of late that might interest you:

The Joy of Quitting, Keiler Roberts (Bipolar, Anxiety, Motherhood, Absurdity, Art)

Death Note, Tsugumi Ohba (Intriguing addictive thriller with an unusual premise)

Blue in Green, Ram V, (Interrogation of loss and existential identity, viewed through the prism of music)

Night Fever, Ed Brubaker (Stylish noir, forcing a man to confront who he is, and whether he truly craves a more exciting life)

Barely Functional Adult: It'll All Make Sense Eventually, Meichi Ng (Witty, touching, resonant, as funny as it is painfully insightful)
