@robertjames1971.blog@robertjames1971.blog I have to go back in a month for follow-up. It's not actually the first time this has happened but it gets more serious. We are looking for signs of glaucoma. We have increasing small indications but one needs sensitive instruments to see them. So we are very early.

BTW I use bifocals, not progressives. Have for over 20 years. But nowadays mostly wear single prescription glasses I buy online in different prescriptions for different ranges of vision :)

@robertjames1971.blog@robertjames1971.blog Though I seldom go out. For going out I need my "real" glasses, yes.

Warby Parker's quality is...unimpressive. Is there a better place to get decent frames? These are a year old and that gross bubbling thing in the plastic is already happening at the nose

I even paid extra for the super ultra mega thinnest possible lenses and...they're not really much thinner at all. Oh and my idiot bitch vision insurance didn't reimburse me at all because vision insurance is a scam don't get it

depereo,

@SirTapTap we just started getting stuff from 'eyebuydirect' - seems like the same quality as the overpriced stuff from local stores. Fits ok usually, though I did have to add a silicon patch on the nose bridge of one set of plastic frames to stop them slipping.

If your significant other has worn the same pair of glasses for a year. How long would it take you to notice a new pair?

Davastewart,

@Saltssaltgirl depends on how different the new ones are

jhavok,
@jhavok@mastodon.social avatar

@Saltssaltgirl I would notice them instantly. No, you can't ask her.

I went all winter without shaving and developed quite a beard. Early in spring I shaved it off. Several days later she asked "did you do something with your hair???"

Eclipse fervor will especially strain understaffed health care systems in rural towns that may not have dealt with an event of this scale."

A total solar eclipse will move across the U.S. on Monday, April 8. People who are blind or visually impaired will be able to experience it as they grow colder and hear birdsong change along with the dimming light, but much of the effect is visual. Planetary scientists Cassandra Runyon and David Hurd have written a guide called “Getting a Feel for Eclipses,” which has tactile graphics that illustrate the paths of the 2017, 2023 and 2024 eclipses. They write for @TheConversationUS about why they made it, and how it works.

gocu54,

This is probably going to be a longshot, but I want to get an idea of what its like to be a from the prospective. I have heard that accountants exist within the profession but I'd like to ask some questions about how this could work and how successful I could be. If someone is willing to talk to me about this, I'd love to have an informal interview. Please boost if you could, I would very much like to get as much knowledge as possible.
, ,

bryansmart,

@gocu54 @serrebi Education is also a concern. There are different roads to accounting positions. My friend got an MBA, then later got involved in accounting. I'm not sure a how a dedicated accounting educational track is. You might can get certs, instead of going full college, if you're planning to serve small clients.

bryansmart,

@gocu54 @serrebi No, I do not. Others in the thread mentioned blind accountants. Reach out to them. They will know.

🦯 🦯 🦯 Advocating for Inclusivity: A Call to Action. Please boost for more reach.

A few days ago, I was commenting on a few posts from National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA) calling out the lack of on photos they post on their social media accounts. I feel that they must be made aware as they are promoting inclusivity and yet, photos they are posting are not inclusive to blind people reading there post. to those of you who doesn’t know, Facebook lets users add alt text on the images they post on the platform.
Let’s break it down: Alt text (short for alternative text) is like a secret doorway to accessibility. When users add alt text to the images they post on Facebook or any other social media platform that allows it, they’re essentially providing a description of the image. This description is then read aloud by screen reading software, allowing blind individuals to understand what’s happening in the image.
Now, here’s the catch: alt text is invisible to sighted users. It doesn’t clutter up the visual experience for them, but it makes all the difference for those blind people like us relying on screen readers. Imagine being able to “see” a photo through words—vivid descriptions that paint a mental picture.

Anyways, enough of the explanation thing. I got a reply from them (please see the screenshot). I’m hopeful that they’ll follow through on their promise. And to all blind people who are following them or any other organization for persons with disability, most specially blindness organizations, let’s hold these organizations accountable. They are promoting inclusivity, so the small steps should be coming from them.

So, my message to the NCDA and to all my friends sharing images online, most specially blindness organizations promoting inclusivity (you know who you are), Let’s make our content truly inclusive! Adding alt text is a small but impactful step toward ensuring that everyone, regardless of their abilities, can fully engage with the content we put out there.

So I've recently become one of the people who have to regularly take their glasses off in order to see certain distances. I've asked my ophthalmologist, and there is no technology (e.g. varifocals or contact lenses) that I can use to avoid this action at the moment.

When I do take my glasses off, I am currently biting the legs in order to keep them handy. This is, at best, unsightly. I cannot keep them on the end of my nose (too big), or lift them up onto my hair (too greasy).

So I'm considering buying a glasses cord and let them dangle when they're off.

I'm just wondering - fedi wearers - what other options do I have to keep them handy? Alternatively, what cool variations can you recommend on the trusty glasses cord?

Gabriel describes this poetic way of preserving his sight as a form of comfort to himself. Being able to make full use of his eyes through while he still has vision cements a multitude of memories that he can share with others.

TheQuinbox,

To anyone who's played with an Olympus LS-P5, does it have voice guidance? If so, it looks like an absolutely amazing replacement for the impossible-to-find LS-P4.

desertstar84,

@TheQuinbox I recently inquired when I noticed a tweet, or post, from them a couple of months ago. They've chosen to change their name to Om System now, and when I saw them post about the new recorder with a review article, I asked about the voice guidance, and sadly, it is not available in this model. The poster suggested that I purchase a DM 720, as it's still obtainable through Amazon. It's a shame they have no trouble recommending such a dated model, but no surprise I guess. Hugs.

bryansmart,

@BorrisInABox @TheQuinbox All true about the LS14, but it has a good stereo image, and deals with high sound pressure well. It's pretty well designed for recording a meeting or small venue music performance. It is bad for recording anything quiet. The iPhone's stereo mics have a lower noise floor. Everything sucks differently. There's nothing great to buy.
