In 1974, ANSI published the Standard character set for handprinting (ANSI X3.45-1974). It proposed a uniform method of #handwriting acceptable to optical character recognition technology of the day. It included only upper case letters.

It had some quirks: letter O has a tail at the top, like Q rotated 90 degrees. S has a little tail at the bottom left. U has a square base. Z has a full-width bar at mid level.

I wonder if anyone ever used it?

@nyrath they were probably only digitizing on a 3x3 or 3x4 matrix per character. They might have hit false positives between slashed-0 and /

Update: Problem solved!

Dear German colleagues of ! Can any one of you transcribe this passage from a letter of 1933?

@carinealders @historikerinnen @histodons I read your text snippet as "Es freut mich, daß Sie bis heute schon so große Erfolge erringen konnten und wünsche ich Ihnen auch für Ferneres noch große weitere Erfolge. Nachdem die jüdische Musik doch bald genug eingedämmt ist, wird auch für unsere deutschen Künstler wieder eine bessere Zeit kommen", even if the first sentence seems grammatically iffy (the word order is a bit uncommon, as if the writer perhaps rephrased the sentence during writing).

Nice to see so many people willing and able to help. But I think it's German Kurrentschrift, not Sütterlin.

Our local calligraphy guild is nearly all very old folks (depressingly so - death announcements come several times a year, some amazing artists are being lost). Their email list is, no joke, just sending a message with all seven gazillion member addresses in the TO: field. Responses are a total mess.

I want to suggest an alternative. Groups.io is my current favorite, but curious if anyone has another favorite online groups/list service?

This "autograph" book is over 100 years old and belonged to my grandmother who was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. Most of the signatures are from high school classmates. It looks like she collected these from the age of 15 to about 22.

This is a lovely article about handwriting. I still enjoy writing on paper and in journals. Fountain pens and inks make this particularly enjoyable.

  • Noise cancelling headphones. Boy oh boy, I can't believe it took me all these years to discover their wonder. Well it was discovered for me because they were a surprise Christmas gift but it counts. Wow!

  • I walked the long way to a postbox to deliver a letter (in photo). I got steps and saw the sun.

  • I started a book, got overexcited and immediately wrote my friend a letter. Here is their name. Yey for learning new things!

LuciaG,

Happy National Handwriting Day!! I’m going to be catching up on some letter writing after I clean and re-ink some pens. Having a fountain pen collection definitely encourages me to write more, and I really love sending and receiving letters. Here is my everyday workhorse pen, the Lamy Safari with my favorite nib, a 1.1 stub and my favorite ink, Papier Plume’s Sazerac.

0xabad1dea,

My normal cursive handwriting (in an especially thick pen), my blackletter hand and the serif hand I’m currently trying to get the hang of. Text is the first time Hayr meets his father’s least favorite wife in Glory in the Thunder

#calligraphy #fountainpen (blue one only, other two are markers)

Same text but in sparkling blue blackletter. yes that is confusing, blackletter is the name of the style, but the ink is blue
same text but in golden lettering imitating a serif typeface

chux0r,

@0xabad1dea excellent hand! I love lettering.

melanie,

Now that I’m learning blackletter calligraphy, my toxic trait is deploying it constantly in my journal 😆 #calligraphy #fountainPens

Ink is Diamond Cashmere Rose, which looks a bit duskier and more muted than my poor lighting allows for.

Completed my illuminated manuscript of Psalm 93 in time for Mother's Day!

I used a modern variation of the Beneventan hand, which was most widely used in southern Italy in the middle ages. The historical script had lots of ligatures, but those are hard for modern readers, so I didn't use any here. This is also the hand where our modern question mark originated.

Side view detail of some of the illumination, with a cross filled with gold ink.

@paradoxmo This Sheaffer No-Nonsense fine point for the letters, and a felt-tip pigment liner for the rest. I used acrylic paint for the illustration, & for ink, a mix of PH Martin's and Higgins from Hobby Lobby. Nothing fancy!

@codrusofathens definitely a fountain pen! The No-Nonsense is pretty well liked by most people, simple but effective.
