good news:

The world's largest battery-electric container ship, Greenwater 01, has started regular service between Shanghai and Nanjing.

The Greenwater 01 is 394 feet long and 78 feet wide, and the main battery needed to power it has a capacity of over 50,000 kilowatt-hours — more energy than it would take to power four average-sized households for an entire year. Even more battery capacity can be added for longer journeys.

And speaking of climate solutions, have you seen a video of a heavy duty EV truck getting their battery swapped yet?

Well, this is going to be how we're going to be able to transition away from fossil fuels in that sector imo.

And just imagine how easy it'll be to use those batteries for grid storage after they've degraded too much for EVs too!

U.S. military has partnered with Sage geothermal company to install energy storage.

EarthStor is a mechanical energy storage technology that taps into the pressure energy of fluid stored deep underground. When electricity supply surpasses demand excess electricity is used to power pumps and inject water below ground. Then, when the grid needs it the heated pressurized water can drive turbines that generate electricity.

“Our report concludes that the rapid growth in solar and wind has brought the world to a crucial turning point – likely this year – where fossil generation starts to decline at a global level.”

In April 2024, the EU’s electricity generation from fossil fuels fell to a record low of 23%. Fossil generation fell sharply compared to April 2023, even as electricity demand increased. This led to a 22% year-on-year fall in power sector emissions.

We CANNOT decarbonize overnight!

President Joe Biden's administration has a goal of a carbon-free power sector by 2035, in order to fight climate change. To meet that target, the country needs to more than double regional transmission capacity and expand interregional transmission capacity more than fivefold.

The FERC's rule on regional transmission planning and cost allocation has been under development for nearly two years.

One major climate message that we've really got to elevate above all others is that addressing global warming is way, way, way, way less expensive than ignoring it!

The cost of solar power has dropped around 90% over the past decade, and battery storage costs dropped 85% during the same period.

It was a serious PITA to get our induction cooktop — we had to get an electrician and someone to cut our granite countertop—but every time I see one of these articles, I'm so glad we did. And lots of folks won't have all the trouble that we did.

They can't be fast chargers because that would cost a bunch getting new wires to the lampposts, but these could really make owning an EV a lot easier for people living in apartments without parking garages.

Did you know that you can purchase an electric vehicle for as little as $1,000?

Not only that, these vehicles also:

  • Can skip traffic jams
  • Be parked virtually anywhere
  • Get over 1,000 mpge
  • Emits no harmful air pollution
  • Don't require a government permit or expensive insurance
  • Can easily be repaired by yourself, and don't require long waits at expensive dealerships
  • Include optional exercise equipment, allowing you to choose to get exercise while in transit (if you want) and skip the gym membership
  • Can be operated by people of almost any age, so your kids can now transport themselves

What is this vehicle I'm describing? Some sort of newfangled flying car? A quantum teleporter?

No: It is the humble electric bicycle.

Spread the word.

There's one issue that matters on the 2024 ballot in the U.S. and many other countries too that matters more than any other issue,

Never missing an opportunity to make life easier for extractive industries, House Republicans passed a suite of bills this week to boost development and dismantle environmental protections across millions of acres of federal land.

Support Democrats or else you're supporting the fossil fuel industry.

Did you know that putting floating solar on only 10% of the surface of all the reservoirs that humans have built could provide 110% of the electricity that we now are producing? Well, now you do.

HistoPol,
@HistoPol@mastodon.social avatar

@GreenFire

Also, it might reduce evaporation considerably, conserving more water in reservoirs and reducing humidity and thus posdibly flashfloods.--hypothesis.

There are some big stories going on, but I hope that my followers can agree that there is no bigger story than our climate crisis.

There is a 70% chance that emissions start falling in 2024 if current clean technology growth trends continue and some progress is made to cut non-CO2 emissions. The IPCC says peaking before 2025 is a critical step to keep the 1.5°C limit within reach.

Let's try to keep our eye on the ball and focus on what we should!

Diageo will be replacing its natural gas boilers with heat batteries at its Kentucky and Illinois production sites thanks to Biden's efforts to decarbonize the globe's largest economy as part of his efforts to make the world a better place.

According to consulting firm Kearney, the beverage sector was responsible for 3.8% of all carbon pollution in 2021 and is not on track to meet its reduction goals.

esearchers at Virginia Tech’s College of Engineering have turned to 3D printing with recyclable material to give wind turbine blades a much-needed sustainable boost.

Researchers at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and TPI Composite explain that this innovation won't just improve the sustainability of wind turbine technology it makes wind turbines more practical and less expensive and reduces energy needed to construct them too.

Utilizing rejected contaminants from the paper recycling process in fired clay brick production can make buildings more efficient, reduce amount of waste going into landfills, and by replacing clay with waste materials in brick production held reduce the firing temperature by up to 20% compared with standard brick mixtures all while offering potential cost savings to manufacturers.

The new website will initially list about 2,000 jobs, located in 36 states as well as Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico."
