So, my dad found an old IBM PS2 model 50. It powers on, but displays weird stuff he can't make any sense of (doesn't help that it's probably english). He tried starting with the original floppy (yes, it's still there), without success. I personally would like to keep it. Is it treasure enough to keep?

Done a lot of work on #ctran tonight. In fact, I think we might have a working parser! I definitely need to check over what I've done, but it's looking promising.

I need to add more checks to make sure that tokens don't appear in files that aren't meant to have them (e.g. DECLARE should only be in .EXT files). Then I need to test that the tree is being built the way I think it is.

After that, it's time to do something with EXTERNALs and REQUIREs to make MANY trees.

Mmm... Shiny goodness alongside shiny goodness.

Exactly the same code on both, just using 's cross-compiler for 32-bit DOS. Zero changes needed.

Seeing the posts from yesterday reminded me I've got a Packard Bell with a Pentium 75 that needs some love.

... Huh. It won't start. Well it probably needs to be cleaned up anyways.

Turns out, not only was the ZIF lever not locked down, but that's only the beginning of my issues.

ety,
@ety@hive.institute avatar

Oh yeah, a link to that aforementioned project: https://github.com/SuperIlu/DOStodon

I've got the lever issue bandaided for now, but it looks like the onboard video is toast. I can hear it cycling up and POSTing, but no error beeps, no display.

I seem to remember the video being iffy the last time this board was powered up. I'll clean up the board, re-seat connectors and modules, see if that changes it, but otherwise maybe looking for a new video card.

More old game music. Blackthorne (Blackhawk in some parts of the world) had two completely different soundtracks. The PC had a much more whimsical and melodious music, while the SNES favored mood over melody. It was all composed by Glenn Stafford. Which one did you like better?

longshot:

So, I used this math solver / grapher program back in high school "computer math" class, on an IBM XT(dos, cga). In 90-91.

It's not one of the programs I ended up with a copy of, and that has bugged me for years. So, anybody got a copy?

It's called HIMATH, seems to be invoked by the MET.BAT batch file, and uses *.SM scripts. From 1988.

It's not on vetusware or winworld. If it's on a garbo or simtel mirror, it is very well hidden.😭

What a productive Saturday!

Continuing from my crack of SimCity 1.02, I did the same for 1.07 plus made a cracking program and a trainer for it, both written in assembly.

The trainer started out as a TSR (my first TSR!) but is now a "direct loader" instead, so it executes SIMCITY.EXE for you.

Pressing F1 gives you over $2 billion, done by hooking a keyboard interrupt vector, which is also a first for me.

Now I just need a cool cracker name (suggestions welcome) and a cracktro :D

Shows my crack tool and trainer for SimCity version 1.07 at work.

A fantasy map of the game Magus, by Ronny Wester.

It's not often we finish side projects so it was pretty satisfying to finish this one. It was started years ago with no thought put into when it would be done. It's rough but still looks kinda neat because maps like these are awesome.

For more info about this game visit https://github.com/cxong/MagusPreservation
Although not as fully featured as other roguelikes, you can play with unusual classes like the duck mage (can swim!)

etenil,
@etenil@emacs.ch avatar

@publicvoit I believe that making Windows a distro is going to happen within the next 5-10 years, probably as a concurrent OS branch first, like was in parallel to the based of the time.

The economical incentives to not have to make their own OS and the compatibility benefits with the whole Unix/Linux ecosystem that currently drive Microsoft to maintain will eventually become too seductive for them not to do it.

Are there any mods for the original games with some QOL stuff without losing too much of the feel of the game?

I love the idea of the games, and they look great, but they're a bit hard/frustrating (esp terror from the deep)

Just not a fan of permadeath either

NMH BASIC (http://t3x.org/nmhbasic/) is a tiny BASIC interpreter for the 8086 that I wrote in the mid-1990's. It runs in 12K bytes and includes a minesweeper game that runs on a TTY. Of course a 12K interpreter was an anachronism in the 90's, but it still was a fun project.
