Has anyone written about how textual generative AI feels strangely close to toxic masculinity in some respects? The absolute confidence in everything stated, the lack of understanding of the consequences of getting that confidence wrong for important questions, the semi-gaslighty feeling when it “corrects” itself when you call it out on something. It so often feels like talking to someone one would despise and avoid in “real life.” I’m curious if anyone did some writing on this.
It's fitting that on a day when I was on campus I spotted a wild beaver, and while I was enjoying the wildlife I also enjoyed listening to some talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist! (1/10)
Next was a wide-ranging talk by Marianne Bertrand on the roots of gender disparities at work at the LSE. Bertrand systematically reviews the literature in this area, consistently pointing to the role of childcare and gender norms around unpaid labor as the source of most of the remaining gap here. FYI Bertrand gave a talk at the Toulouse School of Economics on a similar topic a few years later that is also great. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWpBM0ASLRQ (4/10) #economics#gender
In 2020, Swedish neuroscientists put 30 trans and 30 cis research subjects into a brain scanner and showed them pictures of their bodies. Then they showed them images where their body had been morphed to look more masculine or more feminine. The results support the natural order of gender identity.
A #webcomic page I quickly sketched out while I get ready to go visit my dad in the hospital, inspired by some in-shells in my mentions whining out the same nonsensical arguments for why #gender based #censorship against so-called "female npls" should remain the status quo. First of all, "sksual organs" only applies to the parts actually involved in procreation; the term you're looking for is "erogenous zones," which can apply to ANY gender's npl, as well as lips, ear, knee, elbow, foot, whatever... It depends on the person, and is absolutely not limited to "people who look female." in addition to that, the argument that "female npls must remain banned from public and online because men are attracted to them" is the most asinine argument and I don't understand how (besides #misogyny) anyone can say this with a straight face?? You think straight women and gay men aren't equally as turned on by MALE chests?
It continues to amaze me how, for all our supposed progress towards #equality in other regards, especially #lgbt / #queer issues, top free #inequality remains this one US issue that continues unquestioned and unacknowledged by the vast majority of Americans, even so-called leftists. YOU ARE SAYING IF SOMEONE "LOOKS FEMALE," THEN THEY DESERVE LESS RIGHTS AND PRIVILEGES THAN SOMEONE WHO "LOOKS MALE." HOW ARE YOU OKAY WITH THIS?!?
It is unlikely that advancing women's equality can be achieved without major legal reform(s) in many countries... gender equality will not be achieved via organic social measures/trends (although they can be reinforced by legal measures).
If you have the time this week, this report from UN Women offers some compelling evidence why the law needs to reinforce & respond to demands for gender equality.
How Conservatives Created (and Cancelled) Gender

The link below will jump you straight to the point: Dr John Money, the bigoted man who brought the word gender into modern medicine. Notably, this video discusses surgery to make the bodies of intersex children conform to social norms, but fails to discuss surgery to make the bodies of endosex boys conform to social norms. Stop leaving circumcision out.
"Surprisingly, our results show that women's contributions tend to be accepted more often than men's. However, when a woman's gender is identifiable, they are rejected more often. Our results suggest that although women on GitHub may be more competent overall, bias against them exists nonetheless."
A school has banned books portraying LGBTQ+ parents.
In which century are we living?
Do they don't have the right to live peacefully?
Two advocacy groups have filed complaints with the federal government over a North Carolina school system’s decision to ban all books with gay parents and characters questioning their gender from both classrooms and libraries.
"Two common goals of these cosmetic 'normalizing' surgeries on children’s genitals are to enable #heterosexual penetrative intercourse, and to help the child #conform to #gender and sexual norms"
I was impressed by what my child was taught at primary school. It was about boundaries, staying safe, understanding the body & respect & acceptance. The kids had insights about gender & sexuality that my generation didn't have at that age.
Again Tories stoking gender & culture wars.
A ban is ridiculous.
More evidence that gender diversity is not only an issue of fairness but also an issue of efficacy.
Building on studies in other sectors that have shown diverse teams produce better results, new research into surgery show gender diverse teams in operating theatres enhance patient recovery from operations & reduce complications.
The more balanced the team, the better the result - suggesting gender parity in the (health) workplace has clear benefits!
We are looking forward to the last #Innsbruck#Gender Lecture of this study year: Tatjana Takševa from the Saint Mary’s University in Canada talks about "Tracing the Maternal through a #Transnational#Feminist Perspective"!
