Return to office, or else. IBM recently delivered a companywide ultimatum to managers who are still working remotely, saying they must relocate near an IBM office or "separate” from the company. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/business/2024/01/30/companies/ibm-managers-remote-work/?utm_content=buffera93cb&utm_medium=social&utm_source=mastodon&utm_campaign=bffmstdn

The IBM 5150 was launched 2 year ahead of the #Apple #Macintosh, but #IT wasn't a "insanely great" personal computer #PC "for the rest of us". That's what the Computer History Museum is chatting about here...
https://computerhistory.org/events/insanely-great/

Since the #MS & #IBM #DOS wasn't much more than a terminal with local CPU, floppy/hard disk support, the operating system was a "pirated" clone of #CPM. Even when IBM teamed up with Microsoft to break copyrights of Digital Research & Gary Kildall's IP on CP/M, #MSDOS wasn't up-to-date since there was no GUI available.

Also, a new codeberg issue pointed out that in many I can get basic RAM/RAM array data from udevadm, which appears to dump some dmi data into itself, available to user.

IBMers,

I have a couple of questions as my curiosity and interests have been leaning kinda towards mainframes.

  1. How are mainframes utilized in 2024?
  2. How does the mainframe business work? I am assuming large contracts for hosted services?
  3. Is there enough growth career-wise to merit a segue from another tech related position into mainframe support?
  4. Do I have to learn COBOL?
  5. Are there any other companies providing similar hosted services at scale?
  6. Are there any resources available to learn up on Z/OS and any other services IBM provides? (For free?)
  7. Can we be friends?

Any info is appreciated.
Hats off to all the humans supporting the BIG COMPUTERS.

One of the oldest still operational computers I have is a #ThinkPad #R61i, a #budget ThinkPad I bought probably around 2008, soon after #Lenovo took over #IBM's #laptop business. I dust off the #computer about once per year to run an #update on #ArchLinux. As you can see in the #screenshot, it still runs #KDE and #Wayland on a recent #kernel. Unfortunately, it requires #Nvidia's #proprietary drivers.
So, now tell me again which #hardware is required for a recent #Windows (#Windows11). 😉
