NEW STATS: #IRC Server software in use on the Internet (based on 5500+ publicly accessible servers): #UnrealIRCd 38%, #InspIRCd 21%, ngircd 9%, Hybrid 8%. Ergo grows to 3.5%. See details at https://ircstats.org
I'm thinking about stopping my #matrix server, as I find it too heavy to maintain and I'm not using any of the benefits of matrix federated architecture. I don't participate in any public rooms (even the one I joined) except a private one I have with friends. Also as a bridge to IRC which is cool but just a nice to have…
I want to move to something lighter and simpler, just so I can host a private discussion room with friends (but has to be end to end encrypted, which remove #IRC unfortunately).
#xmpp seems as complex as matrix (is it lighter though?) and too far from my limited needs anyway… I used to host a #mattermost instance, but it is too close to slack UI to my licking and didn't enjoy it too much…
Not sure there is a good alternative for me (insisting on for me, because I know matrix is great for many others).
rn I'm doing a lot of research on early internet fandom for my bachelor thesis and since I was born after the turn of the millennium it's making me wonder how it must have been to be a fan on the internet when Usenet and ICQ/IRC/AIM and GeoCities were still a thing. It really feels like having some kind of lost nostalgia, I've only lived to see early facebook, msn and flipnote as my early internet interactions.
If you were a fan on the internet in the late 90's / early 00's, or know someone that was, please hit me up!! I'd love to have a chat about it!!
(please boost for coverage)
Let it be clear (at least for myself to myself) : I am on #mastodon to escape #facebook and #twitter socially, economically and politically toxic ecosystems. I don't know what my instance will do but I will block #threads
I really hope the #tootcommunity at least discusses about this.
I know some rejoice of Meta "joining the choir" of Federation. I want Meta to wither and die and be replaced by the Fedi. Because that company is evil.
That was my #selfrighteous post of the day thank you ! 😘

1/3 My history in "Social Media" is #usenet and #IRC. I always avoided big corporations when possible, especially USA based ones. So, for me no #facebook, #instagram, #whatsapp, #twitter, #x, #microsoft subscriptionware etc..
Because it is increasingly hard to have relations with banks and government without one, I only make an exception for a smartphone. Sadly, it is almost imossible to have one without "selling ones soul" to either #google or #apple .
@jascha yeah, had like half a dozen people ask me if I have any tickets but not only do I not have any but the decision of #37C3 organizers to neither mandate masks nor install air filters sealed the "won't attend" for me months ago.
Cuz if I have to gear up fully because noone will do even the minimal effort then I might just stay at home, watch the #livestream and join an #IRC instead...
Oi oi, bet there must be some IRC peeps here. Y'all got any recommendations on networks to start out on and any pitfalls I should be aware of as a new user? Mostly looking for a friendly enough general chat. #Fosstodon#IRC#AskFedi
My issues with #xmpp, and why I still currently prefer #matrix:
It's XML everywhere
The session-management system is inferior to what matrix has with session ids and security keys
The closest you can get to a web client is ConverseJS, which is really underwhelming, especially since it uses bootstrap (the css framework) and doesn't even support dark theme :(
XMPP has already fallen of a cliff in terms of popularity, and it's only getting worse, meanwhile matrix is thriving.
XMPP and IRC have a lot of different clients. I personally use poezio and senpai respectively.
It's confusing how E2EE is handled
The flagship matrix server software, synapse, requires too much resources. Meanwhile I self-host prosody, an XMPP server software which is very lightweight on resources (0-1% CPU, 2.4% RAM).
I have to admit that it's a bit "scary" about Matrix's priorities but the few channels I consult on Libera Chat are very very (very) poorly frequented … probably not worth the effort ? 🤔
👉 https://thelounge.chat/
