I'm working on my paper about #jamesbaldwin and #malcolmx. Here are the opening lines:
"April 4, 1968. It was one of the days when those alive would forever remember where they were when they heard that Martin Luther King, Jr. was gunned down by an assassin’s bullet in Memphis, Tennessee. For James Baldwin, the burdens were all that greater, the devastating news all that more painful."
Though written as a fictional play sixty years ago, this could easily be a realistic account today. Considering the matter at hand, that thought is sickening. In spite of that - or precisely because of that - this is a very important read.
“Please try to remember that what they believe, as well as what they do and cause you to endure does not testify to your inferiority but to their inhumanity.” #JamesBaldwin#blackhistorymonth
This year is the centennial of James Baldwin's birth. For Interview magazine, writer Lynne Tillman talked to Pat Hartley, co-director of 1982 documentary "I Heard it Through the Grapevine," about the making of the film, which sees Baldwin traveling through the Deep South. reflecting on moments from the civil rights movement two decades before. "What he said is so relevant now because he said, 'I don’t care if you assassinate me now, but your time, white supremacy, is over,” and this is 1980," said Tillman.
'the children are always ours, every single one of them, all over the globe; & i am beginning to suspect that whoever is incapable of recognising this may be incapable of morality.' - the supreme wisdom of james baldwin #jamesBaldwin#ceasefireNow#freePalestine#gaza#children
"The sea rises, the light fails, lovers cling to each other, and children cling to us. The moment we cease to hold each other, the sea engulfs us and the light goes out.”
Happy Birthday to James Baldwin, one of the paramount writers and thinkers of the 20th century. His work has had a great influence on my life. I'm forever grateful.
“You've got to tell the world how to treat you. If the world tells you how you are going to be treated, you are in trouble.” — #JamesBaldwin#blackaugust
#art#history: 'i imagine one of the reasons people cling to their hates so stubbornly is because they sense, once hate is gone, they will be forced to deal with pain.'
this year, i drew james baldwin (born #otd in 1924) in the act of photobombing paris.
he was a sage for the ages & his observations on society - from race & class to sex - were too much for harlem to hold...even one of its native sons. [THREAD THINGIE] #jamesBaldwin#literature#illustration#portrait#paris
james knew from the start that he was more intelligent than anyone expected him to be & he realised that he'd have to do something with his brain. by the time he was 24 years old, james began to understand that america was a hostile environment for homosexuals - doubly so for those with non-white skin - & he wanted to be free of the racial constraints he'd endured up until then. paris embraced him & he began to write from a context outside of that of a black american. #jamesBaldwin#art#lgbtq
