21/10. If you were in a zombie apocalypse, which of your MCs would you want with you and why?
You do know zombie apocalypses aren't real, don't you? My MC does.

21/10. How do you write an internal monologue and/or telepathy in your work?
I don’t do telepathy because I’m writing about the real world (albeit an imagined version). I do tend to write internal monologue as a mix of reported and direct ‘speech’. It seems to chime with the way I experience my own internal monologue.

Public service announcement: I’ve just added an Online Store to my website, which enables you to order paperbacks direct from me. It’s a better return for me but I can’t guarantee it’ll always be a better deal for you as Amazon’s pricing algorithm sometimes does strange things.
It does also offer the option to request a signed copy, if that’s an attraction to anyone.

20/10. If you don't like a book, do you bail or complete it?
Bail, absolutely. Life's too short too waste time on books I'm not enjoying. And the beauty of using our local library for most of my reading is that I haven't wasted money; which also means I can afford to try all sorts of things that I may not like. (Relax, I do buy books, when I'm confident I'll read them more than once.)

20/10. Are your MCs good at fixing mechanical things or house maintenance?
Jerya developed fair skills in her tasks when young, mostly so she could finish sooner and go wandering. She’s good at sewing and knows how to manage beehives, for instance. As a slave, in Book 2, she’s had to learn a few new skills to add to her list. She’s naturally analytical, which helps.

19/10. As a writer, do you always apply the three-act structure? Why/why not?
Absolutely not. I have a deep suspicion of simplistic formulae in any form of art. In the same way I abhor the so-called 'rule of thirds' in photography; I used to teach photography and I had to spend considerable effort getting some students to unlearn it.

13/10. Do you use beta readers? How's it working out?
So far my only beta reader has been my partner. I know you’re often advised not to use friends and family but we’ve been reading each other’s work for many years (non-fiction of different kinds long before my fiction). She’s a skilled professional, reads widely, and won’t sugar-coat bad news if I need to hear it.

13/10. Antagonist POV: What would a perfect day be like for you?
Perriad: My personal desires are of no account. I seek only to further the best interests of the Guild of Dawnsingers. A perfect day, therefore, requires nothing more than that no one impede me in my pursuit of that end. If only all my Sisters could see it so clearly.

12/10. How do you research real-world locations? Do you visit them?
My series is set in an imaginary land, although it appears to be a distant future of our own world. I've done quite a lot of travelling and trekking and I do draw extensively on these experiences (and on my photo library from these journeys).

28/9. Side character POV: Describe the MC’s sense of humour.
Railu: Jerya’s quite a serious person, not a joker. I don’t want to make her sound dour or dull, because she’s not. She’s as ready as anyone to laugh at the absurdities of life. Of course, most of the time I’ve known her, life hasn’t given us a great deal to laugh about. I think we’re both ready for that to change.

10/9. What are your thoughts on em dashes?
Probably third on my list, after semi-colons and ellipses, but I like them, especially in dialogue. All these things help to get closer to the really rhythms of speech. But I groan when writers use em-dashes instead of inverted commas to denote direct speech. That’s just the ‘I’m doing this differently so I must be cleverer than you’ fallacy.

As I write my next book about my experience of having worked 17 years in retail and the PTSD effects from it, I'm shocked to see the number of people online who describe the exact same weekly nightmare I have that I open the book with.

It tells me this is a more wide spread concern.

I just had to share this amazing cushion I got as a (slightly belated) birthday present from my sister-in-law. The 'bookshelf' contains all my published fiction, plus a couple of the other things I've done, and there's room for the volumes yet to come. Looks great on my usual writing chair.

For years I took English books from a book-box near home, wondering who could be reading English there. My English books were taken too. I first thought of a tourist, living near the beach. But it kept going. One day I found a plane ticket with a direction and full name in the book. I kept it. It felt like unraveling some forbidden knowledge.

I know something he doesn't. I wonder if he wonders who I am too

My next read is the classic 'Frankenstein' by Mary Shelley. One of my all-time favourite books, and a pioneer of science fiction and horror.

My foray into contemporary Japanese fiction continues with this charming novel by Sosuke Natsukawa, about a young boy who inherits a secondhand bookshop from his grandfather and, with the help of a talking cat, begins a voyage of self-discovery. It has the same enchanting, magical lightness so many Japanese novels seem to possess, and is highly recommended.
