I don’t know what the heck Ruth Marcus is talking about, in her new column on the latest :

“the potential problems inherent in bringing such successive prosecutions. Under the Petite policy, named for a 1960 Supreme Court case, noting the need ‘to protect persons charged with criminal conduct from the burdens associated with multiple prosecutions’”

She’s worried this is going to be unfairly burdensome on Donald Trump? Does she not remember anything that’s happened since 2016?

He’s unfairly burdened millions of Americans. If he is burdened, it is perfectly fair. In fact no burden we can impose on him could possibly be enough to achieve justice

I did not know that “In the UK, both the Evening Standard and the Independent are already part-owned by a bank controlled by the Saudi state.” News organizations cannot maintain independence when they are literally owned by billionaires — whether those billionaires are nations, organizations, or people. This is an emergency.

Since ABSOLUTELY ANYONE can build their own Mastodon Server and join the network, you'd bound to find absolutely anything.

That doesn't mean you're likely to see it (unless you go looking for it.)

Today, reported that the Stanford Internet Observatory "has found rampant child sexual abuse material on Mastodon."

“Investment in one or more centralized clearinghouses for performing content scanning (as well as investment in moderation tooling) would be beneficial to the Fediverse as a whole,” Thiel and co-author Renée DiResta wrote, referring to the so-called federated universe of platforms."

I've personally seen none of this and it seems a lot is coming from Japanese instances, which I can't read. I have seen instances doing a lot to block hateful and bigoted content, but the so-called bad guys will always be trying to slip in more content and I don't think most of use want anything to do with child porn. What is the best way forward?

It's hard to talk about "platforming voices". It's a thing. There's not enough time for everyone to pay attention to everyone. Choices have to be made. But also, most of our largest platforms didn't really earn their audiences.

The solution AFAIK is to both make decentralized media competitive with legacy systems and expose inauthentic hosts whose position is actually dependent on serving somebody else's interests. Then this conversation can be had in earnest.

I'd say that institutionally, many of them did. , , and are all popular for good reasons. is one of the most beloved (or hated) entertainment companies for a reason.

But the problem is, as might say, they've been run by people with agendas, and agendas change. Furthermore, these institutions have been passed down to management and employees who are nothing like their predecessors.

I think there are legitimate reasons why, say, the and are popular now, but the reasons why they became popular don't really apply to those institutions as they exist today.

"If this level of naked hate for a group of people seems inappropriate for a mainstream op-ed page, that’s because it is. While open, dripping contempt for trans people has been normalized in right-wing media for years, and while the hatred has continued to intensify, conservatives writing in mainstream papers have tended to moderate their vitriol rather than openly taking the side of hate-mongers. In a normal article of this type, for instance, Parker might have briefly mentioned the bomb threats against Anheuser-Busch facilities, or the harassment campaign that resulted in Mulvaney fleeing the country to feel safe. In this column, Prker doesn’t take a sentence to condemn the violence. By eschewing the niceties of condemning violence she is openly making common cause with those on the far right who are using threats and harassment to attempt to drive trans people out of public life."

https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2023/07/05/hottest-day-ever-recorded/

But WAS this the hottest day in 125,000 years? Climate Scientists are a contentious bunch & I actually did that simulation at GISS so hold my beverage while I check.

Its tough comparing the heat (cold/rain/etc.) of a single day against a time period where you don't have that kind of time resolution let alone spatial coverage observations

"Indeed, the Titanic — and, now, the submersible — might be a reminder that the deep ocean is the only resource-rich realm on Earth with the power to keep White men from exploiting it.

There’s a reason many of us Black folk struggle to understand why many White, wealthy folk participate in extreme, death-defying experiences and pay (often lots of money) to experience smallness and powerlessness. It’s a romanticism of peril, of death, as a way to appreciate life — in other words, a privilege. For the poor and the marginalized, the threat of social obsolescence and powerlessness is a lived, everyday reality. No need to pay for the, er, thrill."

No, , the Supreme Court did not say that had to draw another district "favorable" to Black residents, as your headline wrongly claims. The word "favorable" doesn't occur a single time in the decision.
The word they used many times was "proportional", and the idea behind that word is that the districts need to be equitable to Black residents. EQUITABLE, not "favorable."
Shame on for this bad headline.
