Just a reminder. Scotland and Wales removed this STUPID policy years ago. An easy example of sanity being brought to bear with devolved assemblies. Roll on independence.

TIL "in 2014, the City of #Sydney Act 1988 was amended to give eligible businesses two votes in council elections, compared to one each for residents.
As a result, businesses that own, lease, or occupy rateable land in the City of Sydney can currently nominate two people to vote on their behalf in #council#elections." 👀
The justice ministers of the Council of Europe member and observer states have adopted the so-called Riga principles, outlining how Russia should be hold accountable for the losses and damages it has caused in Ukraine, the Council announced on Sept. 11.
"Held in flagrant violation of international law, (the sham "elections") constitute a further illustration of the denial by the Russian Federation of the values of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law upheld by the Council of Europe," the council said in a statement.
Mary Smail has installed 16 solar panels on her house despite it breaking planning laws. "If bad laws are not challenged then they never get changed and we can see that through things like the suffragettes and civil rights in America."
Latest #EuropeanUnion EuroBarometer is a pan-European survey asking about key social issues. I recommend reading the whole survey results, here are some key points.
88% of EU citizens are in favour of providing humanitarian support to the people affected by the war and 86% are in favour of welcoming into the EU people fleeing the war. 75% approve of financial support to Ukraine and 72% back economic sanctions on Russian government, companies and individuals.
In addition, 66% agree with banning state-owned media such as Sputnik and Russia Today from broadcasting in the EU and 64% support financing the purchase and supply of military equipment to Ukraine. 64% also agree with the EU granting candidate status as a potential member of the EU to Ukraine. All in all, 56% of respondents are satisfied with the EU’s response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and 54% are satisfied with the response by their national government.
On joint EU defense policy:
In this context, 77% of Europeans are in favour of a common defence and security policy. 80% think that cooperation in defence matters at EU level should be increased, 77% believe that Member States’ purchase of military equipment should be better coordinated, 69% would like the EU to reinforce its capacity to produce military equipment and 66% say that more money should be spent on defence in the EU.
@kravietz I suggest if they want to invest massively in #renewables, have enough EU budget resources to support Ukraine and increase defence cooperation, #Europeans should start voting for parties that support these things in their national elections. Of course, most don't realise the #EU is run by our national governments, have no idea what the #Council does or how Weber's #EPP is chasing after the far right at the moment, etc.
