This is right and good, to move elephants to sanctuary. "Like many institutions, the Louisville Zoo has arrived at a crossroads of tradition and reality. While elephants have been a featured species for most of the Zoo’s 54-year history, our recognition of the species’ complex social structure has evolved dramatically," the zoo said in a news release. https://www.wlky.com/article/louisville-zoo-elephants-retiring-leaving/60199764

An Amazing ‘Zoo Story’

The 'world's largest private zoo' in Jamnagar, Gujarat, the venue of Reliance scion Anant Ambani’s pre-wedding celebrations, has come up under the shadow of a series of legal challenges, with allegations of illegal transfer of elephants from different parts of India, as well as scrutiny of India’s wildlife authorities.

#Bangladesh's #CriticallyEndangered wild #elephants received a #CourtOrder banning their adoption & protecting them from exploitation.

#AnimalRights groups welcomed the High Court suspension of all licences, so young #AsianElephants can no longer be captured & taken into captivity.

Only about 200 of elephants remain in Bangladesh, with about half of those living in captivity. Poaching & habitat loss caused marked decreases in their numbers.

#Heartwarming footage has captured a #rare #PinkElephant playing with another calf in a waterhole in #KrugerNationalPark, #SouthAfrica.

#Elephants are typically gray, but this small calf, which belongs to the genus #Loxodonta, has pink skin & fair hair, as a result of an inherited condition called #albinism — a genetic disorder that stops the production of a molecule called #melanin that is responsible for pigment in the eyes, hair & skin.

#Hindu #myths from #ancient #India can still serve as parables today. Here are two I recall about #elephants:

  1. Three blind men touch an elephant in three different places, such as a leg, trunk, or tusk. Each therefore reaches a very different conclusion (e.g., it's a tree) as to what the phenomenon is.

Interpretation: We cannot very well see things or people as a whole. Even the perspectives in #academia come from different disciplines. Different people looking at a multifaceted individual can each draw a very different image of the person.

  1. Three animals cross a river, and each reaches the other shore. The rabbit swims along the surface, the horse occasionally hits bottom, but the elephant touches bottom all the way.

Interpretation: This is a parable of enlightenment or individual differences in wisdom. People can only understand things to their own depth. They might therefore avoid a person who is too heavy like the elephant. Just sayin"!

“Close to me”

Elephant mothers carry their babies for nearly two years before giving birth. Then they ensure their babies get the best food, teach their children the most useful skills and show their children how to lead the herd during hard times.

Elephants learn how to pick the best plants for eating, how to defend against predators and how to navigate steep embankments — all from their mothers.

“Elephants grazing in Amboseli swamps”

Amboseli National Park is a national park in Kenya that spreads across the Kenya-Tanzania border. It is one of the best place in the world to get close to free-ranging elephants.

The park also has views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world.

The big sleep ... this little elephant calf was separated from its herd in a wildlife park in Tamil Nadu, south India, but was subsequently reunited with them by park officials. Here we see the calf, aged about four months, napping with its mother three days later.
