I was cleaning up my desktop and found these stacked exposures of fireflies that I captured in 2019, but I'm not sure I ever shared anywhere. I didn't think they were any good, but now I see how beautiful these photos are even with their flaws.

Lights fantastic

Sriram Murali showcases a night sky and a forest illuminated with fireflies. The firefly flashes start at twilight, with just a few, before the frequency increases and they pulse in unison like a wave across the forest. Fireflies, which are in fact beetles, are famous for attracting mates using bioluminescence.

Location: Anamalai Tiger Reserve, Tamil Nadu, India

“For these nocturnal fireflies, [if] you put up a streetlight or a security light on somebody’s house, there aren’t going to be any fireflies,” Lewis said. “If they can move out of that area, they will.”

Amid the horrors of the world, there are fireflies and sunsets and creeks murmuring and whales breaching and moss unfurling. A reminder, not least of all to myself, to cultivate wonder and gratitude.

"More than 170 species of Lampyridae, or light-emitting beetles, light up North America's nights. But some species are threatened with extinction. Habitat loss, overuse of pesticides, climate change and increased light pollution threaten some fireflies."
