Progress! We've got a real plan where the project is going, and are having a fun time learning 3D! Here is our new test map, and a faster tank to drive through it.
We still need to gut and rework the weapon system, but things are getting fun!
On display is the Tank (a rigid body), 'dynamic objects' (things that change when you shoot them a certain amount of times), and our destructable building blocks (the brown blocks that are rigid bodies but also explode).
Performance isn't bad but enemies on the map are currently tanking frame rates on the bigger map, so we're working on that part.
Learned this only after 500h+ of Godot: You can (and should) close "tabs" aka other opened scripts from time to time. Helps to keep an overview AND more important: reduces loading times of the project! I was wondering why it took FOREVER when i loaded my project. #gamdev#GodotEngine
Turns out there's pkg:flutter_soloud, which already does most of the things we need. I spent the last few weeks helping Marco, the author of the package, to make the API more Dart-isan.
😅 Two types of #GameDevs: Those who backup because they've lost data, and those who will... after they lose data! Just did my quarterly backup. Tedious but better safe than sorry! 🎮💾 How's your backup game going?
Quick post about next week's livestreams. I wanted to say this live but my internet had other ideas 😞
My partner has a trip out of town so I'm taking care of bedtime stuff that would normally be done by them. I've not decided whether I'll postpone or cancel the affected streams.
Friday will still be on. Saturday and Sunday will be the problem. Will post closer to the date when I have a better idea of what's going on
What's your honest opinion on #Nyghtmare the Ninth King's Bosses? Im curious... #gbstudio#gameboycolor#gamdev If you haven't already, get your copy of a few physical carts on YastunaGames / Songbird Productions! Oh and spoilers, I guess, for the Bosses. #retrogame#castlevania
A #Lemmy#gamdev member asked what you'd tell your past self before you started making games. Here's mine, after 19 years of this:
Do not, under any circumstances, attach your sense of self-worth to your games.
Never make game development your identity. Let it be a thing you do, not a thing you are.
Build a community outside of game development as soon as possible, even if you’re an introvert. You won’t understand why this is so important until the day you need it and don’t have it.
Trying something new... maybe I can finally get my values to be writeable without a sync point. Though it doesn't even have to be burstable, maybe native is overkill.
This made me think of an old idea I had: making a web-based Ultima-like framework that allows others to make 2d rpgs (a little like #bitsy). Would be great if this was combined with a series of videos looking into Ultima's rpg features in depth. Sound interesting to anyone?
