I've always been aware of this history, as the town I grew up, on the edge of Glasgow, was a major fort on the Antonine Wall. Got young me interested in history, learning that it didn't all happen "far away", but also on my doorstep.
The winged soul/cherub is a common motif among Galloway gravestones. Popular during the 18th/early 19th century, it symbolises the flight of the soul from the body. This example is from the Clachan of Penninghame.
I found the smallest egg I’ve ever seen today. My hands aren’t large and when intact would only have been about as long as the width of my middle finger. My guess is that it is the egg of a willow warbler - they are numerous in the birch wood where it was lying. #nature#Scotland#birds
Fucks sake 🤦♂️ He has every right to be upset but that's it.
Never any excuse to even have her in a chokehold. Clearly his ego & maturity couldn't handle it.
Despite #RoeVsWade being overturned, as someone watching from #Scotland, I still believe it's ultimately the choice of every woman what happens with her body, it's never for anyone else to dictate.
Scots govt straight-out lying as they tell care workers to stop masking: "The vaccination is the best protection from COVID-19". Not by itself it isn't!
"Social care settings are peoples’ homes, and it is important that we continue to move towards more normalised living... Wearing a mask outwith times where there is a clinical need can create a false sense of security." Only if they're inappropriate masks or inconsistently worn!
The mercat cross in Culross, on the north shore of the Firth of Forth in Fife. This is one of Scotland's best conserved and most beautiful villages and the nearest thing you'll find in the country to a 16th century time capsule. Up near Plockton, passing Loch Carron I spotted the hillside opposite glowing as the warm light of the evening sun cut through a gap in the clouds.
I quickly dashed down a field to get a few shots, of which this was the best one.
The sunset never did light up the sky as I'd hoped, it just fizzled out, but at least I had a few shots in the bag 🙂
We believe this film to be an important record of Scottish social history. Its observational style captures natural and spontaneous conversations on the streets and doorsteps of one small town in Scotland during the constitutional crossroads of 2014. There is no other record like it.
While some folk are reminiscing today about John Smith and how wonderful he was, mind and take a moment to remember his involvement in redrawing Scotland's waters so its oil would belong to England.
"Further documents suggest John Smith, the future Labour leader, was a key figure in the covert campaign."
Ardwell Point in the Rhins of Galloway, looking across the North Channel to Ireland. It was across this sea that the Hiberno-Norse Gall-Ghaedheil came to Galloway, over 1000 years ago.
The imposing Castle Menzies near Aberfeldy in Perthshire. The castle had a complex history, both before and after it was built in the 1500s. For centuries it served as the stronghold of the Chiefs of Clan Menzies. More pics and info: https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/aberfeldy/castlemenzies/index.html
