I still don't trust gyms enough to use them, even when is low. Here's why: I ran an experiment in my home office using my CO2 monitor. I did my daily high-intensity exercise in the sealed room at 7:30. Then I let it air out and worked quietly in the same sealed room starting at 8:30. It took:

  • Less than 20 minutes of exercise for CO2 to rise from 600 to 1200.
  • Almost 2 hours of working at my desk to rise from 670 to 1270.

@augieray My Primary Care Physician recently told me it’s totally fine to go to the gym and gave me the side-eye when I responded that the risk still seems too high, imo.

Thanks for sharing this info.

Taking a short Mastodon break. I'm tired of the culture of criticism here. Unlike Twitter, on Mastodon, it comes from those on the left who attack liberals for not meeting their purity tests. I've been attacked for wanting to help defeat Trump by those who don't like a Biden policy; for COVID-safe dining outside with heaters because that harms the environment; for traveling masked because some immunocompromised feel they can't. Stop attacking others; start being the change you want in the world.

@augieray I’m sorry you’re experiencing this. I really appreciate your posts and find them helpful, and look forward to seeing them again, whenever you’re ready to come back.

Yesterday’s COVID shot hit me like a freight train. I’m pretty useless today. ☹️

AchillesTang,
@AchillesTang@mastodon.social avatar

@GottaLaff Ugh, I always have that issue (though switching from Moderna to Pfizer helped some). But it’s miserable and I hope you’re feeling better very soon.

A beautiful, fun day playing with my dog at the park turned into a terrifying evening emergency vet visit. Literally thought she was dying when she could barely stand up, vomited, and fully lost control of her bladder. The “good” news is the vet is fairly certain she has marijuana intoxication, which isn’t fatal and should resolve in 12-24 hours. After fluids & anti-nausea meds we’re home & she is resting in her crate. No idea how/where she ingested thc. Poor pup. 😢

After: A very woozy and disoriented pup at the emergency vet clinic.

@amyfou Thanks! Gotta say I was very happy to sleep in with her this morning. She’s doing a lot better now.

Does the fact that Trump holds himself up as the “law and order” candidate while facing dozens of indictments strike the MAGA folks as at all ironic, or does that one just sail right past them?

AchillesTang,
@AchillesTang@mastodon.social avatar

@therobburgessshow In my experience, those who support authoritarians believe those individuals have the absolute right to achieve their goals by any means necessary. Like religious figures, they are above the law.

Nobody panics like a box full of ants. Absolute experts at going from calm to total freak out in seconds.

It's probably a sign of too much time with ants, but their style of freaking out is kind of cute to me. If you watch carefully they are running in circles, opening mandibles looking for something to bite. Sometimes just biting an object just in case.

Then in a few min they are calm again.

I think it's a visual display for larger animals. But also ... confused ants.

AchillesTang,
@AchillesTang@mastodon.social avatar

I am doing something this weekend that many COVID-cautious people won't: Seeing a movie in a theater. I used to go to theaters 2x a month. I've been to theaters just 3x in four years. But, I want to see Dune 2 on the big screen. My thoughts and process:

Waited until 6 weeks after the movie was released.
Waited to the lowest point for COVID transmission in 8 months.
Going to a noon Sunday matinee.
When I booked, we were (so far) the only tickets sold.
I'll have a mask and my CO2 monitor!

AchillesTang,
@AchillesTang@mastodon.social avatar

@augieray Enjoy! It’s amazing! I took the same risk and happily, there were only about a dozen of us in the huge theater. I was the only one masked, of course.

Xbox laying off 2,000 workers because "the industry didn't grow enough" is obtuse at best.

And it ignores a simple economic reality even a toddler should be able to understand:

Infinite growth is a goddamn myth.

It’s the great collective delusion of capitalism.

An industry cannot grow year on year indefinitely.

At some point you run the fuck out of consumers.

If your business model is based on hand waving hypothetical growth, you’re either lying to us or you’re lying to yourself.

AchillesTang,
@AchillesTang@mastodon.social avatar

@Daojoan “Infinite growth is a goddamn myth.” FFS THIS! I want these words plastered across every billboard and graffitied on skyscrapers and printed on tee shirts, hats, and patches. The company I work for expects 30%(!) growth every year(!) and it’s just fucking nonsensical.

That wealthy tech 46-year-old who’s trying to live forever?

Avoiding booze and sleeping well and taking supplements and experimenting with injecting himself with blood plasma from his 18 year old son?

Turns out he got COVID in 2022 …

… and by his own report lost 15% of his lung capacity, from which has yet to recover

Excellent post about the lessons from this, by Nate Bear: https://www.donotpanic.news/p/the-billionaire-who-wants-to-live

I know not everyone has the same options, but my wife and I make special efforts to stay safe while remaining social. Today, on a near-freezing day, we rented a small greenhouse at a local brewpub and met some of our safer friends. Small risk, but for us, worth it. (Meanwhile, the brewpub was jam-packed with people. Five years ago, I wouldn't have thought twice about socializing in the crowd. Maybe someday we'll be truly past and I will again -- but I doubt it.)

AchillesTang,
@AchillesTang@mastodon.social avatar

@augieray That’s a nice option! I can’t even explain how it makes me feel to see every restaurant with wall-to-wall people, ALL unmasked. I walked out of a place last night after 5 minutes in line (was planning to get take away) but it was a crammed little space and I was the sole person with a mask. Not worth it! Looking forward to warmer weather and more outdoor socializing options.

For the “It's just the flu” crowd:

CDC estimates that there have been 180,000 hospitalizations and 11,000 deaths from flu so far this season.

In the past three months alone, has hospitalized 306,000 people and killed 19,000 in the US.

And since COVID isn't seasonal like the flu, in the past 12 months, COVID has hospitalized 899,000 and killed 69,000.

And that doesn't even consider that COVID is more likely to leave long-term health damage than flu.

Just the flu, my ass.

AchillesTang,
@AchillesTang@mastodon.social avatar

@augieray And those deaths are almost certainly an underestimation. My mother passed in September shortly after getting Covid, but it was not listed as a cause of death. Septic shock and heart failure were the documented causes, but those outcomes were 100% a result of Covid complications.

AchillesTang,
@AchillesTang@mastodon.social avatar

@augieray Thank you. And thank you for your hard work and dedication to raising awareness and educating people!
