It appears Google's AI overview is really just RAG over the top search results (= search stuff on the web given the user query, let LLM answer query given the contents of search result)

Naturally, redditors have started poisoning search results. Google ranks Reddit very highly. This issue is basically not fixable unless Google largely ignores Reddit content except for known good content, or develops a model they can use to filter adversial content (which is basically impossible)

Glorius.

And if you think perplexity.ai is any better, think again. They are all doing the same shit:

  • Search top web results for query
  • Stuff results plus query into a prompt
  • Ask LLM to answer query based only on contents of search results.

Tada (Note: the answer looks superficially better until you get to the coconut section :)

Just sayin’ it’s nice to see one of the big AI players saying out loud what I’ve been saying: generative AI is fundamentally broken and cannot be fixed. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

LLM's don't sometimes hallucinate - they always hallucinate; it's literally how they work. Sometimes they resemble reality to the viewer -but the LLM doesn't know that - just like a cloud can look like a puppy dog to a viewer.

A cloud ain't a puppy dog, and an AI ain't truth

Why does want to implement ? It's not about images. It's about modelling what workers do on Windows, and then replacing them.

The most expensive part of a computer is the fallible feelings-filled unpredictable meat sack that operates it.

Google has YouTube, Google Photos, Maps, and a bucket load of search data, Google Analytics, advertising, as well as it's data (e.g. transcriptions). And a bunch of data from Android services. From this data they can model speech, model videos and model advertising systems, and how humans respond to them.

But they can't model what people do on computers.

Amazon has Prime data, and a bucket load of compute. But no operating system data. They can build models based around e-commerce and advertising systems.

But they can't model what people do on computers.

Meta has waves hands enough analytics to model human behaviour in the Metaverse.

But they can't model what people do on computers.

Microsoft has GitHub.
Microsoft has LinkedIn.
Microsoft has SharePoint.
Microsoft has Teams.
Microsoft has Dynamics.
Microsoft has O365.
Microsoft has Windows telemetry data.

Microsoft can model what people do on (Windows) computers. Like fill out spreadsheets.Write emails. Synthesize web pages of research. Interact with colleagues on Teams. Create and edit documents.

Microsoft wants data so they can model what people do with operating systems.

Then replace them.

Imagine a CoPilot that doesn't just write buggy code. Imagine one that also does spreadsheets. That creates documents on SharePoint. That communicates with colleages on Teams. That has a customer pipeline on Dynamics.

That's what Recall is about - 360 degree surveillance of the worker, to model their functions, make them fungible, replicable - and replaceable.

I updated the primary LLM behind The Library of Unwritten Books from GPT-3.5 to GPT-4o, and I have to say, it really upped its game. You should check it out, share your favorite books, and tell all your friends.

What is The Library? From my 10yo, "Wait, is this a story or a game?" To which the correct answer is, "Yes." That's exactly the response I hoped for when creating the library. 😀

This makes total sense given microsofts surveillance strengths. At first I was thinking "but why images then, why not just a key and mouse logger and patch into the core apps like office and browser that probably dominate most of the economic behavior they'd be modeling," but then as with LLMs being used for all text tasks no matter whether natural language is relevant, I had a laugh thinking the tech for image parsing is similarly overdeveloped, and how the contemporary "AI" approach is basically to recapitulate human sensory modalities as the janky ass interfaces to the world that they are rather than directly use symbolic logic or adapt to specific domains.

I think thats sort of cute, in a "human are space orcs" kind of way. Instead of teaching the computers to think, we taught them to see and talk, and whatever happens in the middle there is less relevant.

@verge why would he say anything other than that he will ensure it gets fixed.

The new app manages to make my iPad and iPhone Max feel too small by reducing the browsable space into a tiny, shadow covered scrollable area between the giant and opaque, search, now playing bar, and header components.

It’s not pretty, and it’s not performant. So much gray. It’s just not pleasant to use. Real bummer how it devalued my nice sound system and impression of the brand overnight.

No notes at this time, Tim

I am very sad to report death May 17 at age 89 of Gordon Bell, famous computer pioneer, a founder of Computer Museum in Boston, and a force behind the @ComputerHistory her in Silicon Valley, and good friend since the 1980s.
He succumbed to aspiration pneumonia in Coronado, CA.
I'm told there will be a "Celebration of Life" service in August in Silicon Valley.
(Another fallen giant, we attended a similar service in April for another, Nobelist Arno Penzias.)
