Parallel universes are real! You shall be sent to live in one... forever.

You will get a choice between 5 universes that each have a similar collection of languages though technology & culture may be very, possibly hazardously, different.

To make your choice you may request one (1) kind of typical artifact. This will be fetched from each universe, you may compare to make your choice.

Electronics will be disabled. If the artifact doesn't exist... you get nothing.

What do you request?

EverydayMoggie,
@EverydayMoggie@sfba.social avatar

A dessert, here defined as a non-psychoactive food that is consumed entirely for pleasure rather than nourishment.

I'm beginning to get the feeling that Universe B is basically to this one, but once technology had advanced to a point roughly comparable to where we are now, there was a collapse that set things back hundreds of years. And maybe they like it that way?

@futurebird

EverydayMoggie,
@EverydayMoggie@sfba.social avatar

I've gone and cheated now, compiled all the answers in a spreadsheet and listed everything I can conclude about each universe from those answers. (I guess I shouldn't post that because it might be spoiler-y.) On the basis of what I currently know, I'd choose Universe D.

I don't mind sharing it, but I'm not entirely sure what's the best way to do that. What would you suggest?

Let's see if I can import into one.

When I was a kid, my dad had stacks of Fortran paper punch cards. Programming with punch cards on shared mainframes was a slow, deliberate process which required a lot of time, effort and coordination.

Things are really different today. You’ve got home computers and screens and graphic IDEs and all sorts of manuals and support you can lean on. You can solve problems in a fraction of the time.

Yet despite all these improvements, people are still working 40-50+ hours a week, but for even less money.

Better has only improved the working lives of very few people.

Why would be any different?

EverydayMoggie,
@EverydayMoggie@sfba.social avatar

I suppose what we really need to figure out is how to shift control of work and earnings from owners to workers, not just the watered-down concessions we typically see, but a fundamental change in how we view these structures.

That's needlessly cruel, and we should fight this. The library, and the wi-fi, are vital lifelines for many homeless folks, and one of the few safe places they can relax, stay informed, educate themselves, etc. A friend of mine is homeless much of the time, and the first place he goes in any new location is the library. Public wi-fi is what enables him to maintain contact with his friends and family, and to access needed services.

I have a question for members and the broader & community. This isn’t as an SFBA admin, just a curious fedi user. We arn’t crafting policy from this.

How would you feel about an algorithm/AI/system scanning an instances feed and filing reports based off the code of conduct, with context and links for moderators to review? With proper disclosures on the about page and a good effort to make it known.

Note, this would only be reporting. The computer would have no mod powers

EverydayMoggie,
@EverydayMoggie@sfba.social avatar

There wasn't an option for "maybe" so I chose the closest thing. Automod could be useful in some circumstances, for example, a sudden influx of spambots; or a time when no one on the mod team is available. I think it needs three features:
• Could be turned on or off at the discretion of the mod team
• Instead of just flagging problematic posts, it would hide them pending review
• Parameters it uses to determine which posts are problematic can be modified by humans

You asked for it, and it’s coming. Quote posts, search, and groups are on their way. In the meantime, check out the new onboarding experience launching today. https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2023/05/a-new-onboarding-experience-on-mastodon/

What I think would be better is a short "help me find my server" quiz, like the things you see on websites that help people choose the right product model for them, based on a few multiple choice questions. Then it could suggest one or two servers from the pool that are already available on https://joinmastodon.org/servers.

I really want to lift up the mods of the SFBA instance: @cd24, @Ingurido, @jeffkibuule

I, a Black woman, have had a marvelous experience on Mastodon because these mods don't play. For being a place-specific instance, SFBA has a very clearly expressed value system and it's reflected in the mods. They are proactive, even-handed, and respectful.

I wish others on and through the could say the same of their instance mods.

Here's what I saw as stuffy. Now I'm kinda curious to know if this matches what anyone else saw.

I noticed, when I first arrived, a whole lot of people telling newcomers that how they spoke was wrong, how they used (or did not use) content warnings was wrong, that they shouldn't talk about certain subjects, etc. It was offputting, made me consider not staying. Finally decided I would just be as I am, and if people don't like it, Mastodon gives them tools to avoid me.

Apparently they didn’t even let Tucker Carlson record a final episode to wrap up plot lines and now we’ll never know if they caught those pooping Gypsies

EverydayMoggie,

That is kind of standard when people get fired, though. Companies are afraid the person will wreak havoc if they know or even suspect in advance.

I just realized I don't own a single pair of shoes that are less than 6 years old and the average age of items in my wardrobe is like 4 years.

EverydayMoggie,
@EverydayMoggie@sfba.social avatar

That's a good thing! The manufacture of clothing is very costly environmentally, and the industry is infamous for maltreatment of workers. So buying fewer pieces of clothing, paying for stuff that is ethically made and will last, and using it for a long time are all great!

I recognize lots of folks here don't trust Bluesky, but I actually find a lot of what they're doing really, really interesting and worth watching, including their experiment with "composable moderation." https://www.techdirt.com/2023/04/20/bluesky-plans-decentralized-composable-moderation/

EverydayMoggie,

I keep reading that as "compostable moderation."

Lol. Over on Twitter, Elon praised a ridiculous thread about "how people become NPCs" that suggests the way to "break out" of it is to exercise more which will let you think for yourself.

And it strikes me that the world of people who accuse others of being "NPCs" is a lot more rigidly minded and unable to think for themselves than the people they accuse of being NPCs.

EverydayMoggie,
@EverydayMoggie@sfba.social avatar

I always took it to mean "people who are not allowed to play because the game is rigged so that only we have agency."
