I really don't love this thing

• I don't love that I can't turn OFF file sync that I never use
• I don't love that many top-level items (like ‘Stock & Marketplace’) are false fronts that just open a web browser.
• I don’t love that prominent UI here is trying to sell me more seats — and I can’t hide it!?!
• I don’t love that it can’t auto-fill the 2FA login codes when they come in via text message

Thank you for letting me vent about this thing

EverydayMoggie,

I turned off file sync years ago, and it's never been a problem for me, so I'm confused.

Had a long ass chat with my gramma last nite. She said ' Jaden you will never find happiness because all you do is plan for the next thing, always looking for something new and better. Just sit back and enjoy what you got'.
Think she may have a point??????
What yall think 🤔

EverydayMoggie,
@EverydayMoggie@sfba.social avatar

She's right.

One day, years ago, I was riding BART (transit train). Across the aisle was a group of boisterous young men, talking loudly. I felt they were making fun of me. I don't know. But they had me on edge, watching warily.

Their conversation drifted onto another subject, then one of them said, "When you feel you stuck in the never, come back to the now."

In that instant, everything changed. I understood what had been only a distant concept before. When you can, however briefly, rest in the present moment -- with all its awkwardness, with all its fear, with all its discomfort -- in time you come to realize you don't have to be swept away in all that.

You might even be surprised to discover something precious. I'll always be grateful to that stranger for being my teacher.

Man, not again. sells seriously under-specced devices to maintain their “starting from…” price and then upselling people to actually-usable models. Remember those 16 GB flash iPhones they kept selling (2010–2016! I checked!), even though that meant people didn’t even have enough space to update their OS? 8 GB RAM is that, once more, but for runtime memory.

I think the 256 GB flash, 8 GB RAM minimum-spec Mac is a low-resource trap for anyone who wants to use a computer for more than light web browsing (and I mean light—web pages are resource hogs these days) or a messaging client. They are certainly not suitable for anyone wanting to locally store or edit media.

For 2024, I think 512 GB flash and 16 GB RAM should be minimum for MacBook Air, while 1 TB and 32 GB RAM should be minimum for MacBook Pro.

I had a minor argument with someone the other day, who insisted that 8 GB in a Mac was actually a usable spec.

People on Twitter are debating whether a person using uncommon words like "delve" are trying to sound smarter than they are, or worse, are ChatGPT bots, because "normal" people don't talk like that.

You don't have to get upset, or embroiled in the debate. Not worth the time or attention. But I'll share some important context as your friendly neighborhood Nigerian 🙋🏿‍♂️

Many Nigerians have bigger English language vocabularies and better command of grammar than the typical American or English person

EverydayMoggie,

This has been the bane of my existence since I was a little kid. I use what I consider a perfectly normal word, and get called a "walking dictionary."

Bigger vocabulary and better grammar than most Americans is a pretty low bar.

The tallest building in Taiwan, half a kilometer high, survived the big quake just fine - in part thanks to a 'tuned mass damper'.

It's a 660-tonne steel sphere hanging from wires: a pendulum designed to reduce quake vibrations by 40%. It's yellow and it hangs from the 92nd to the 87th floors, visible from inside the building. On 8 August 2015, strong winds from Typhoon Soudelor made it swing by 100 centimeters. I don't know how much it swayed during the quake.

It's inspired a popular mascot in Taiwan, called Damper Baby. I'll show you the actual steel sphere, and then Damper Baby.

EverydayMoggie,

I think there are a lot of people around who are more in love with the mental image they have of romance and/or sexuality than they are with any actual person. I mean, people are so messy and complicated, and they always have so many flaws; they just ruin the whole pristine fantasy. Perhaps the sad part is that most of these people don't realize they're not all that into real human relationships, and they keep trying to find one that fulfills their ideals.

Exactly what @Gargron says!

Governments should not rely on Threads for connecting to the Fediverse. It would be far better for them to run on their own servers. Ideally, I’d prefer to follow @potus (which doesn’t exist right now) than @potus.

But last week, Joe Biden was not on the Fediverse. Now he is. This is a huge win and will result in further migration here.

This is neither ideal nor perfect – but it’s better than it was last week.

Given the recent court rulings that elected officials in the United States can't block constituents on social media if they're posting in an official capacity, I'm not sure it would be feasible for the US government to run a fediverse instance. They might be required to leave it essentially unmoderated except for content that is outright illegal.

So it seems that the ’s doors have a propensity to gape open because the screws that hold the door striker to the body are improperly torqued and this chews up the car body so badly that they can no longer be torqued back down.

I love how one xitter user’s suggestion is to use gaffer tape to hold the striker in place. I’m sure that works great in a collision, but hey, no panel gaps, right?

✅ Great suspension in the front & seat + fat wheels make the ride smooth as butter

❌ 3499 EUR starting price!

It's like the SUV of bikes. More info in The Friday Checkout.

As a frequent pedestrian and occasional cyclist, it feels like the road rage incidents I've experienced with drivers in the Mission has gotten significantly worse over the past year. This might simply be because there is so much more traffic than before, but it feels heavily related to all those anti-bike signs that businesses are putting in their windows and the dishonest way local TV stations have covered the recent improvements to Valencia Street.

I didn't anticipate middle school students might be little grossed out by the images of the ant larvae, "ew maggots!" but I explained to them the difference between larvae and maggots.

"We think of fly babies, called maggots, as gross because they eat decaying things, but they are also an important part of ecosystems. Ant babies are called larvae and are fed nectar and insects by their sisters."

I tried to improve their view of larvae without slandering maggots too much.

It's Selma day! As people in places like Boston feel smug about the racism in supposedly backwards, Southern, red places like Alabama, I'd like to remind everyone that:

  • Boston is more segregated than Birmingham, Alabama
  • Police violence data shows more racial disparities in Boston than in Mobile Alabama, or Birmingham, Alabama. Birmingham cops are worse than 55% of all other police departments. AKA, pretty average for the US. Boston is worse than 99%. Exceptionally bad!

🙂🙃

Chart of police violence in Mobile, Alabama, showing that 50% of Mobile is Black but 75% of the people killed by police there are Black, a disparity worse than 55% of all US police departments.
Chart of police violence in Birmingham, Alabama, showing that 70% of Birmingham is Black but only 58% of the people killed by police there are Black, a disparity worse than only 34% of all US police departments.

EverydayMoggie,
