When we talk about raising the price of something in order to decrease demand, just remember… the only demand we’re decreasing is among those folks who can no longer afford said thing. Increase the taxes on fuel and you’re making it harder for lower income folks, not the wealthy who can pay any price you demand. Demand may decline, but it may also be punishing to the people just trying to get to work, not the jet-class.

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@KatM @azonenberg @jenk3 And it has huge negative political effects like the yellow vest protests that make larger progress harder. We absolutely cannot afford to pit climate progress against the middle and working classes. We need broad political buy in.

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@thesquirrelfish @KatM @azonenberg @jenk3 the question is not “do we want people to drive fewer ICE’s?” it’s “how do we best transition away from ICE’s?” A gas tax is a regressive policy, maybe there are better ways.

For example Bernie sanders advocated grants to families and businesses to purchase EVs.

Retired old people who aren't just ... busy being sick and dying give back to their communities in HUGE ways. We had someone's grandpa come to our robotics competition to cheer the team on. The old people in my building do all the serious political organizing and man the polls. I'm too busy working being in my 40s and all that.

Raising retirement ages takes away more than just "retirement" ... it makes everything harder.

Far as I'm concerned it should be 59.

@futurebird @joewein I actually really appreciated this podcast episode on it:

Basically, it is not a real problem. It is very fixable. We sort of just have to do it.

Jackiemauro,

@RickiTarr at least the Jesus apocalypse doomsday preppers seem to still be pasteurizing their milk before giving it to their kids. The raw milk thing…I cannot. I cannot.

Democrats seem to think they've "won" on the "border issue" because they've offered a plan to Republicans and predictably Republicans don't want to do anything (including things they claimed they wanted to do very badly not that long ago)

But, other than making liberals feel smug I don't think this matters because the only way Democrats can "win" on this issue with the people who care about it is by adopting Republican bigoted messaging about the border.

And then I might not vote for them.

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@futurebird @Infoseepage yea there seems to be a fundamental tension in that democrats don’t want immigrants treated worse than currently, but they also are clearly not interested in the disruption that would come from increasing the costs of farm and domestic workers to what they’re actually owed. So they sort of waffle in this in-between that makes no one happy.

I feel like the clear popular winner would be to squeeze employers of undocumented workers except that we all depend on that labor.

Every day I wake up, and search for an Alpha Male to tell me what to do with myself, but so far I haven't found one, so, I just do the things my vagina whispers to me in the night.

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@RickiTarr Man I love the term alpha male. Cause it’s supposed to be based on the alpha male wolf, who rules his pack…alongside the alpha female 😂. And it turns out wolves don’t really have that structure at all. They’re just families. With a mother and father who are basically equal and both hunt and watch the babies.

    @lzg No you see, they are cool and worldly because they “know” it’s all hopeless. Optimism is just naïveté.

    It is one of the most frustrating currents of thought to me. From climate to politics I just can’t stand the feigned helplessness.

    Like, actually we are capable of doing good things. In fact, many good things are happening! They just started vaccinating children against malaria! Stop! Being! Hopeless!

And I’m deeply, deeply grieved by the thought that I did anything in my life before Trump to contribute to that unrighteous rage. Animosity is the enemy of liberty and unity. Before Republicans can reject Trump or end Trumpism, they’ll have to ease the anger that dominates far too many right-wing hearts.”

    Internet: “yea. You did. What are you going to do to repair that harm?”

    DF: “stop attacking me! I already said I’m so sorry!”

    So ‘dimsum’ means ‘touch the heart’ and I think one of the reasons why I’m very drawn to Mexican and Salvadoran foods is: I’ve been able to explore ‘new’ flavors and ingredients (since I wasn’t in this part of the world until recently).

    Yet in many ways they are the only foods that have the same ‘touch the heart’ vibe that I get from my ‘home’ cuisines of southern chinese / Malaysian / Thai / Indonesian. When I get disappointed at those cuisines here, I explore those other ones instead.

    Jackiemauro,
    @Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

    @skinnylatte have you gotten a chance to explore Nigerian food? There are a few great places in the bay. I think (???) it may hit a similar note and even if it doesn’t it’s a super interesting cuisine!

    There should be a word for the very specific type of shame that happens when a person that knows what's up (👍🏿), hopes to be nominated alongside highly talented but underrepresented people that they admire, only to be horrified and ashamed as they themselves are nominated, while the underrepresented people that they look up to, are not.🙂🙃

    Adele -> Beyonce.

    Ryan Gosling -> Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie.

    @mekkaokereke I once was in an Uber and (for some reason) the white driver was describing his doubt about the claims that police were racist. I told him as gently as I could that my personal experiences with the cops as a nice white lady were a world apart from the cops I saw when I was with my husband (hockey playing Black guy). Somehow just the word of a “nice white lady” seemed to make a huge impression on him. He seemed so shocked.

    Rapper Meek Mill is wondering out loud if Africans have access to streaming music apps like Spotify, and if so, if they listen to his music.

    There aren't enough stories about the Africans working at big tech companies, but there are a lot of us. There are many Ghanaians, South Africans, Kenyans, and Nigerians 🙋🏿‍♂️, working in tech.

    I often remind folks that Nigerian 7th grade math curriculum includes binary, octal, hexadecimal, statistics and data, algebra, and geometry.

    One of the biggest problems in modern discourse is we keep saying "But" instead of saying "And"

    Example: "Hamas committed murder but IDF strikes have killed innocent people" immediately sets up justification and whataboutism.

    Whereas "Hamas committed murder and IDF strikes have killed innocent people" gives us objectivity and a realistic world view that doesn't justify anything.

    Jackiemauro,
    @Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

    @Daojoan It’s like the absolute minimum level of complexity to hold in your mind, that two opposing actors can be simultaneously committing crimes.

    And yet.

    Somehow every story needs one villain and one victim. And one is never justified and the other is always justified.

    These are human stories, it is always going to be “and”.

    Jackiemauro,
    @Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

    @Daojoan with the added point of “A is bad and B is bad” does not imply “A and B are equally bad”

    @Infoseepage @c0dec0dec0de @cxj @mekkaokereke so follow up question, if the battery dies can you open the back doors from the outside at least? Say you have a kid in there and need to get them out, can you at least do that?

    @Infoseepage @c0dec0dec0de @cxj @mekkaokereke Holy shite this is insane. So if your kid is in the back and your car has no power, you can’t open their door from the inside OR outside. Your only option is to drag them out through the front!?
