#NYAG James began investigating the org 4 yrs ago amid reports of runaway spending practices. Since then, it has been in a tailspin.

Membership has plummeted from nearly 6M 5yrs ago to 4.2M today. Revenue is down 44% since 2016, acc/to internal audits, & #legal costs have soared to tens of millions a year.

Nonetheless, the gun rights movement has become a bulwark of #conservative #politics during #LaPierre’s yrs leading the #NRA.

The development will change the shape of the NYC trial, since #NYAG #LeticiaJames was seeking to oust #WayneLaPierre from his position. She is also seeking financial penalties from #LaPierre & 3 other defendants.

LaPierre played a leading role in transforming #GunCulture in #America, but the last ½ decade of his tenure at the #NRA was marred by scandals & internal upheaval.

Threats to #UnitedStates #PublicServants are spiking, #Garland says

Federal #law enforcement has recorded a “deeply disturbing spike” in #threats against government workers & public servants in recent months, #USAG #MerrickGarland told reporters Fri.
This week alone, ofcls are investigating #BombThreats that forced evacuations at several courthouses & state capitols across the country. The AG said federal ofcls also arrested & charged a man for threatening to kill a congressman & his children.

3 federal appeals court judges expressed deep skepticism on Tues about #Trump’s central #defense to an #indictment accusing him of plotting to overturn the #2020election: that he is #immune to the charges because they arose from actions he took as #president.

All of the judges of the #UnitedStates Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit — 2 Democratic appointees & 1 Republican appointee — peppered a lawyer for Trump w/tough questions about arguments he raised to support the #immunity claims.

Judge Henderson also seemed less than persuaded by Sauer’s argument that #Trump was acting in his role as president & upholding his #constitutional duty to preserve the integrity of the #election when he sought to overturn his loss to President #Biden.

“I think it’s paradoxical to say that his constitutional duty to ‘take care that the laws be faithfully executed’ allows him to violate #criminal #law,” Judge Henderson said.

In one tough moment for #Trump, who was present but did not speak, Judge Karen Henderson, the sole #Republican appointee on the panel, pushed back on an argument made by his #lawyer, D. John Sauer, that for >200 yrs, American courts had never sat in judgment over ofcl actions a president had taken while in office.

Judge Henderson pointed out that until Trump was #indicted, courts had never had to consider the #criminal #liability of former #presidents for things they did in the #WhiteHouse.

The change… would mark a significant overhaul for how #politics work in MI, where those hoping to win (office) …currently have to participate in competitive Aug primary races, decided by voters. A caucus sys would give a smaller group of people #sway over Republican noms….

After wks of negotiations & on the eve of #Congress returning from break, top #Senate & #House members said they had agreed to set the total amt of spending at nearly $1.66T, bringing funding in line w/deal struck last yr between Pres #Biden & then-Spkr #KevinMcCarthy that met w/vehement conservative oppo.

The agreement includes an increase in #Pentagon spending to $886.3B & holds nondefense funding essentially flat at $772.7B, incl’g $69B agreed to thru a #McCarthy / WH handshake deal.

#Trump, 2X-divorced casino magnate, made little pretense of being #religious before his presidency. The ardent support he received from #evangelical voters in 2016 & 2020 is often described as largely #transactional: an investment in his appointment of #SCOTUS justices who would abolish the fed right to #abortion & advance the group’s other top priorities.…

But #religion scholars, drawing on a growing body of data, suggest another explanation: #Evangelicals are not exactly who they used to be.

Being #evangelical once suggested regular church attendance, a focus on salvation & conversion & strongly held views on specific issues such as #abortion. Today, it is as often used to describe a #cultural & #political identity: one in which #Christians are considered a #persecuted minority, traditional institutions are viewed skeptically & #Trump looms large.
