Today was Terry Pratchett's birthday.

GNU Terry Pratchett, the world is a worse place for your not being in it. Thank you for your stories, they helped me to be better.

It's the 12th March.

9 years?

Terry Pratchett left us 9 years ago today? I'm still utterly furious that Death didn't see fit to return him.
I learnt to think for myself due to Pratchett. I learnt to value others and learn from our differences. I learnt that just because lots of people say something it doesn't make it right.

Most importantly, I learnt to be me

I never met him, but I miss reading his new words more than I can explain.

Here are my reasons that bonfire night should be cancelled:

  1. it's celebrating failing to bring down the monarchy
  2. it's terribly bad for the air quality
  3. it's fucking terrifying for many people and animals

We give such weird advice to kids. I remember being 12, and very shy, and people would tell me to just be myself. Now 30 years later, I'm 42, and still trying to figure that out.

@RickiTarr

Adults: "Just be yourself"

Me aged 7: Happily does stuff

Adults: NOT LIKE THAT

Me:

Adults: "Be yourself the same way everyone else is"

Me aged 47: still working out who she is after a lifetime of trying to "not like that"

Fucking swearing allegiance. Fuck off.

No.

Why on earth would I do that? Which fart-brained toff thought that was a good idea?

Bewildering to me that anyone would think this was worth doing.

As a white woman I don't see much racism on fedi. Of course I don't, I'm clearly white. That's white privilege.

Yes I'm disabled, I'm a woman and am disadvantaged by that but those disadvantages would be magnified if I were also black.

Do I believe black people who say they experience racism here? Well why the hell wouldn't I? How does it benefit them to lie about it?

If I see racism that I recognise (and I'm not great at that but am trying to be better) I will report and block.

Well thank you to all my Eurovision people, tonight has been a delight!

I was worried it wouldn't be as good without twitter but it's been brilliant.

Same time Thursday then?

Shame we have to wait till next year to do it all again!

You know what delights me about the flowers in my garden?

I do love the colours and the chaos (it is not prim, it's rather wild).

But,
more than that, I love that the bees and butterflies visit.
The very idea that at some point a little fuzzy bummed bee has gone and done a little boogie to tell the other fuzzy bummed bees where my garden is just delights me.

I've attached a poppy flower from earlier in the year.

Has everyone had a good ?

I personally have found it much easier to get served in shops, not been bumped into as much and had cars stop at zebra crossings.

As you can tell I used my time wisely.

I regret to inform you that the dietary reply guys have found me.

If you need me, I’ll be in bed reading Dr Atkins Diet Revolution and fiddling with my fully automated luxury calorie counter while doing calisthenics.

Oh no!!

Let me guess, they're asking if you tried 'insert diet of choice here' and suggest that it's actually easy? Fuckers.

No, hang on, they're probably telling you to move more too?

Did I cover it all?

I bet they've never had to do this, and have no concept of what it's actually like.

Fellow folks who have a formal diagnosis:

When you received your diagnosis, was it a massive anticlimax?

I ask, because my kid got his yesterday and told me that it felt underwhelming, and I distinctly remember feeling the same way when receiving my own, four years ago.

There wasn’t this great moment of relief, just a calm, almost bored psychiatrist saying “Yes, it sounds like ADHD. Let’s try you on this medication and see how you get on”

PetraPhoenix,
@PetraPhoenix@mendeddrum.org avatar

@DJDarren

It wasn't until I took meds and the stimulant medication sent me to sleep that I believed I might not have tricked the psychiatrist into giving me a diagnosis.

But when I was told, yeah, it was completely underwhelming

Contrary to what I was taught about history as a child, I now firmly believe that Europeans didn't export civilisation, we did our level best to destroy it.

Every place we went we took greed, individualism and an erroneous sense of superiority.

That is our legacy. And now the people we bore down upon are living with most of the consequences of our actions, both historical & current.

PetraPhoenix,

@DJDarren

I have spent a LOT of time recently yelling things like "You fucking dickhead, I told you I want that there, not at the bottom of page 7"

Or, "You asked me if I wanted to add a caption, why do you think I now want the caption for the picture 2 paragraphs above the picture, wanker"

Etc, etc, etc, etc.

It thinks it knows best, but it does not.

At least you could turn Clippy off.
