Example below is a good example of nuanced meaning & connotations in words that is missed when literally translating words.

But my favorite contrasting hard to translate phrases are:

“Forgive me father, for I have sinned”

Vs.

“Sorry daddy, I’ve been naughty”

@phazed09 @bookstodon Good idea!
Sometimes it bothers me that others don't remember much of their favorite series. Only how they felt in the end.
It makes for better conversation if someone remembers the what and the why (and for me it's easier to convince myself to watch or read something if I know what made something good) 😎👍

helenczerski, to ocean

One of the biggest habits that humanity has to kick is that of seeing a human-free space and assuming it’s worthless/empty unless we fill it up with something. It’s happening with plans for the ocean, deforestation for “development”, talk of delivery drones filling the future sky, cube sats that will hide the stars. This “space” is the planetary engine, and it’s incredibly valuable NOW. doing all sorts of things that keep us alive & enrich our lives. We should protect it.

Rana,
@Rana@mastodon.nl avatar

@helenczerski If I see a human-free space I get an immense urge to explore it and then get mad when it becomes the civilized space we all know (and are supposed to love)

Especially in videogames when a game forces me to bring civilization to a beautiful nature area I want to stay devoid of people because it's just so nice to get lost in
I get mad at that
I got mad at animal crossing 😂

We have to downsize farming. Build houses and such on those lands but leave the fun to explore areas alone

Norwegian values: it is considered an slight to refuse to shake someone's hand, and women should be treated the same as men

Muslim values: it is considered an offence for a man to shake a woman's hand

a big controversy erupted around this recently. a public school held an event that featured hand shaking, and the Muslim boys present refused to shake the girls' hands. the principal told the boys that this is not how we do things in Norway. it got the media's attention and all hell broke loose.

Trying to explain

Rana,
@Rana@mastodon.nl avatar

@Radical_EgoCom I think good things will eventually happen again, but that great sacrifices will have to be made by certain generations for that to happen. And the thought of that upsets me, not because I have to give up on stuff but the fact that we have to sacrifice several generations worth of futures to save distant ones because the old generations just made such a mess of it all... it's absolutely tragic

For every plastic bottle I recycle, a company is dumping a thousand tons of plastic then paying their way out of the fine

Rana,
@Rana@mastodon.nl avatar

@Radical_EgoCom I'm genuinely upset that they're trying to slow down the rise of solar panels over here
The energy network is struggling with processing these huge amounts so instead of giving the network maintenance companies more funding to increase capacity, the government decided to make solar panels less and less profitable, eventually making it so you get nothing from them
The stupidity
I profit now, if they keep this up I'll lose money by having to pay maintenance fee

i wonder if acting in your own best interest is something you learn from your parents, or are some people just naturally better at it than others?

seeing as i have ADHD and people who have that tend to have self control issues, and the trait is highly inheritable, i assume there's a large genetic component to it.

the urge to do stuff i shouldn't is often overpowering. it's usually nothing crazy but i definitely shoot myself in the foot a lot.

Rana,
@Rana@mastodon.nl avatar

@thor It's something I learned to do when I found out no one had my back. When the only person you can trust is yourself you'll learn to keep self preservation in mind with every step you take. Even if later, when you're a grownup, you do build yourself a strong network
Others being happy too is part of my self interest because they'll be less likely to see me as enemy.

Rana,
@Rana@mastodon.nl avatar

@thor That sounds difficult. Wanting to get out of a situation but then having a grasp like one of those arcade prize machines. Within reach but never able to strongly grab it.

I always had a bucket list so full I never knew what to start with and also very stubbornly cling to goals.

Why precisely do I need to get out of my comfort zone?

Rana,
@Rana@mastodon.nl avatar

@below Not sure if you want an answer
But going out of your comfort zone once in awhile can be good to learn to see situations from perspectives you weren't aware of yet. If you're lucky, it even allows you to learn to enjoy stuff you either disregarded in the past as "silly" or "stupid" or gives you a whole new interest altogether.

Just the idea that there's a walled garden which completely takes away choice doesn't sit well with me
Add to that the willingness of others to blindly join it because strictness provides foundation... people can be scary sometimes 😅
Doesn't bode well for the future
