@linuxgal @RickiTarr I found interesting that Gibson wrote "The Peripheral" around the same time as Neal Stephenson wrote "The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O" It was as if there were something in the water that said great sci-fi authors should hit the time travel beat.

I think Gibson did it best by creating the constraint of the peripheral.

Here is an idea: if a company gets government subsidies and reports profits at the same time, the size of the government subsidies it gets should drop by at least half of the profits it reported.

Why don't Republicans use ranked voting for speaker of the house. It might be a faster to get to what they need: nominate everyone, then do a second turn with the top 5 vote getters as ranked voting. Would make the process smoother

    @stargazer @mosseri It would only be flooded with ads if you subscribe to ad feeds. If you're on the Mastodon side, you'd be able to subscribe and communicate with account as you do with other instance. Only the Threads users are likely to see ads.

    @briannawu I used to feel the same but keep reminding myself of the intellectual equivalent of "looking for the helpers." Seek out people who are actually discussing ideas instead of looking at those who are lobing opinions with the goal of scoring points. There are a lot of people looking for solutions. They are just not the loudest voices around.

    And the democrats haven't voted with GOP outliers to prevent the election of a speaker. They've been voting for their candidate consistently to elect their candidate. 100% of them voted for the candidate they advanced.
