This is funny. OpenAI, who scraped the entire internet to build its product, is now enforcing copyright via notices. They still don’t give credit for stealing content from everyone, yet now acting like holier-than-thou https://www.reddit.com/r/ChatGPT/comments/1cnvyzp/

@Viss I mean, Microsoft can be excused for this kind of security breach, no?

They're only a little mom-and-pop service provider, not a global corporation with a $2.97 trillion market cap or anything... they don't have the cash to have a serious go at their technical debt or anything.

Tesla to lay off everyone working on Superchargers, new vehicles

Tesla is also getting rid of its public policy team, despite robotaxi ambitions.

@arstechnica ...almost like the push for green vehicles wasn't about being the frontrunners in a new personal vehicle ecosystem but was instead about getting government grants and forestalling investment in public transportation infrastructure after all.

I've got five check marks on my list of 11 chores I need to do this weekend. Three are nixed due to the rain and three require more enthusiasm then I can muster at this point.

One threatens to uncheck itself. I'll probably need to re-address it tomorrow.

Exactly what affine transformation is the raw function

(x,y) = (x+y, x-y)

Equivalent to? Like if I wanted to express that transformation in terms of translations and rotations.

Wikisteff,
@Wikisteff@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc That's a weird one. Do you mean (x', y') = (x - y, x + y), rotation by 45°, followed by a scale by sqrt(2)?

[x'] = [1 -1] [x]
[y'] [1 1] [y]

That is rotate by 90°, followed by a mirror about the line y = x, and a scale by sqrt(2), unless I got it wrong somehow.

Generative AI outputs should be subject to FOIA and agencies need a plan to “document and archive its use so that agencies can continue to comply properly with their FOIA responsibilities,” EFF’s Beryl Lipton told FedScoop. https://fedscoop.com/generative-ai-could-raise-questions-for-federal-records-laws/

Wikisteff,
@Wikisteff@mastodon.social avatar

@eff You realize that if generative AI outputs are subject to FOIA, it means that a huge database of employee-generated productions has to be warehoused, secured, maintained, and made available on demand, right?

That this large and valuable database will be subject to attack and investigation by both domestic and foreign actors?

Weird that we don't do this for government spreadsheets, for instance...

AI is so small in energy use compared to crypto.

Training GPT-3 used 1.3 GWh, BLOOM 0.4 MWh. The massive GPT-4 used between 29 and 62 GWh. Using the higher number for GPT-4, we could estimate training Google's frontier model Gemini Ultra at 150 GWh.

In 2023, crypto used 120,000 GWh of energy.

Wikisteff,
@Wikisteff@mastodon.social avatar

@danhulton @joby As is "more useful than crypto". :)

For me, the figure of merit should be tonnes of CO2 equivalents from life-cycle use per million dollars of GDP produced. AI could displace more emissive industries in the future world economy, resulting in net gains for the environment.

Wikisteff,
@Wikisteff@mastodon.social avatar

@danhulton @joby My friend, I've cited the data, I linked the results. In energy terms, generative AI is roughly as emissive per unit GDP produced as machinery manufacturing is; worse than electronics manufacturing and better than transportation, fossil fuel energy production, forestry, agriculture, or printing.

Wikisteff,
@Wikisteff@mastodon.social avatar

@danhulton @joby Many programmers find large language models highly useful in contrast to looking up error messages in Stack Exchange. Demand for LLMs remains high, and most firm use cases are to assist in writing documents and emails, not scamming people online.

There are absolutely bad uses of GPT out there, and the lack of any regulation or enforcement in this space does not help.
