Now been Deutsched by the train driver of the Strasbourg - Offenburg trainโ€ฆ for talking

The train is here. I got on. A guy with a bike got on. He asked me a question, we talked

Driver comes out of the cab, scowls at me, and says โ€œPause!โ€

Iโ€™m only sat here in your effing train so early because your timetables are crap. Shame on me for disturbing your peace by helping a fellow passsnger

The driver is SWEG though, so probably not allowed to use a SNCF staff waiting room

@jon I have taken this train, from Offenburg to Strasbourg. Noisy diesel, even tough the track is electrified between the cities? Different electrification systems, but still why?

I got into professional software development in the early 2000s. At the time Java and .NET were kings. Ive since learned that Smalltalk was a serious contender in the 90s. My question is, what happened?

Was there something about the Smalltalk language or runtime that made it a poor choice for business software, or did Sun and Microsoft just have better marketing?

What would you consider as the most recognizable bitmap fonts in tech history?

Iโ€™m imagining stuff like:

  • the arcade/Atari font
  • Chicago (Mac, then iPod)
  • VCR/video equipment fonts
  • Minecraft font
  • IBM PC fonts (MDA, VGA, stuff like that)
  • perhaps System font from Windows 3.x
  • Commodore 64, just because of the sheer popularity of the machine

What am I missing?

@gruber @mwichary But did the Monaco exists as 9 pt bitmap font? On my Classic with System 7.1 it seems like it doesn't.

Geneva seems like it was the only font that did have an italic bitmap (9 pt) version. Times, Helvetica and Palatino doesn't and look crap in italics because bitmap override the TrueType-versions

Iโ€™ve worked in web development for what feels like a century. I mustโ€™ve written a bazillion redirects in Apache, nginx, php, node, and probably half a dozen other languages/configurations.

And still, to this day, I need to Google โ€˜302 vs 301โ€™ every single time I write a redirect to remind myself which one is the permanent and which one is the temporary.

If someone has a tip to help me remember, Iโ€™ll be forever grateful!

@michael I thought one should use 307 and 308 since 301/302 might change protocol (eg. from POST to GET). But if the redirect is only for GET this might not be a problem. https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc9110.html#name-307-temporary-redirect

@michael The fact that Apache's "permanent" and "temp" in https://httpd.apache.org/docs/trunk/mod/mod_alias.html#redirect and https://httpd.apache.org/docs/trunk/rewrite/flags.html#flag_r generates 301 and 302 says a lot

Is there really no way to mute somebody elseโ€™s thread where somebody has mentioned you? Canโ€™t find anything for it in either the apps I use or the web UI.

Edit: found it. The option is only availabe if youโ€™re in the Notifications view. If youโ€™ve pressed the post the โ€œmute conversationโ€ option disappears from the ellipsis menu.

Dette er jo ikke bare Oslonรฆrt, det er Oslooslo. Oslo-ski, Gardermobanen, lol, strekninger som allerede er hรธyhastighetsbaner som funker ganske greit.
Hva med Arna-Voss, Genistreken, Ringeriksbanen, hva som helst meter trasรฉ pรฅ Sรธrlandsbanen, elektrifisering Rรธrosbanen eller et eneste meter mellom Gรธteborg og Ski, vรฅr eneste relevante vei til kontinentet?? Jeg er skuffet

@kly @DORpapst Poenget er vel heller at noen av de ganske sรฅ kostbare investeringene i Stor-Oslo ikke egentlig har kommet innbyggerne til gode i forhold til de ressursmessige kostnadene. Prosjektene blir sรฅ kostbare og store at de nesten knekker ryggen pรฅ de som skal bygge infrastruktur. Hvorfor ble Blixtunnelen dimensjonert for 250 km/t osv.

@kly @DORpapst En kunne tenkt seg at endel av utbygging og drift at lokaltog i Stor-Oslo skulle ha vรฆrt drevet innen Ruter sitt ansvarsomrรฅdet (med tilfรธrsel av midler) og at Jernbanedirektoratet kunne ha har mer fokus pรฅ infrastruktur mellom byene.

@kly @DORpapst Og alt dette er ikke en kritikk av Oslo, men hvordan man har prioritert infrastrukturutbygging fra samferdselsdepartmentet. I praksis sรฅ legger man opp til at f.eks. fjerntog skal vรฆre til for turister og ikke noe som skal transportere mange folk.
