Inspired by @sheepchase doing this, and by @LadyMarth01 posting her album of the day, I'm gonna get in on the fun and do the for August!

Since I'm starting a few days late, I'll catch up, then do one a day.

Saw this a month ago from @cmconseils , and made a mental note to start in in October. So here we are!

I'm not gonna try to make them thematic to the month or season, if you were wondering. It just so happens it's October. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I'll thread all of them off this post.

Top 20 movies of all time, as ranked by IMDb. How many have you seen?

🍿

auzzy,

@davemark Unsure. In any case, I'm not accusing them of deliberately excluding non-American movies. I just think it indicates those who rate movies on IMDb are largely Americans, and not endeavoring to see movies from other countries. Because it's unlikely that all of the best come from one country, no matter which country that is

auzzy,

@davemark The fact that their list is all American movies is very strange to me.

"Oppenheimer" is nominated for 13 Oscars this year and Christopher Nolan is a frontrunner for Best Director. Here's @IndieWire ranking of his entire filmography, from his debut in 1998 to today. Which of his 12 movies is your favorite (this poll is in order of IndieWire's preference, with "Dunkirk" as the publication's top pick)?

https://flip.it/igGNyk

For more stories like this, follow IndieWire's Film Magazine, @film

auzzy,

@CultureDesk Oh, just because it's not my favorite Nolan film doesn't mean I think it shouldn't win! After all, Oppenheimer is my #2 Nolan film. =)

That being said, I'd vote for The Zone of Interest for Best Picture. Although I won't be sad when Oppenheimer wins big.

Is the term Bos-ploitation a thing? As in, an exploitation movie which takes place in the Boston area? Because I'd like to suggest it.

Examples:

  • Thanksgiving
  • How to Rob
  • The Boondock Saints

Any others you can think of?

Nostalgically, I'll note that back in the 1960s and 70s (and to some extent beyond for some years), television and film production generally operated with the (now considered bizarre) suppositions that it wasn't necessary to have five editing cuts per second, nor a loud continuous score that obscures most dialogue. Nor was it necessary to limit dialogue vocabulary to a third grade level. But yeah, what did they know, right?

auzzy,

@lauren If you know, then it may be more productive to spread the word, rather than complaining.

Just a thought. 😉

auzzy,

@lauren All of that still exists, if anything even more so. The indie boom has been excellent for adult dramas. It's just that many theaters only show blockbusters these days, making them less obvious.

Check out Showing Up, Tar, Patterson, Past Lives, Aftersun, Pinball: The Man Who Saved the Game, and more.

Margot Robbie is taking on yet another of our childhood memories — her company LuckyChap is set to produce a live-action feature film based on Monopoly. Here's more from Variety.

auzzy,

@CultureDesk Referring to Monopoly as a "beloved" brand is hilarious.

Tis !

Been filling in some of my gaps with the films of Lars von Trier, to great success, as usual. And gonna continue with Dogville this weekend. =)

A new documentary premiering next week at SXSW tells the story of a group of eight artists who built a secret apartment in a new mall and lived there — undiscovered — for four years. Variety's Brent Lang spoke to director Jeremy Workman about what "Secret Mall Apartment" is really about. “You hear the premise, and you’re like, ‘Oh, this is gonna be like one of those crazy prank movies.’ But it’s using that to explore these deeper ideas about art and what it means, as well as gentrification and how we’re living in the shadows of these corporations,” he says.

Album of the Day 178: One Time for All Time by 65daysofstatic

https://birdsrobe.bandcamp.com/album/one-time-for-all-time-deluxe-edition

2005 post-rock/electronic album from Sheffield, England. Combines the usual post-rock mix of guitars, synths, and drums with glitchy electronics and drum and bass–style sampled drums to make their own distinct sound.

My picks: ""Drove Through Ghosts to Get Here," "Mean Low Water," "65 Doesn't Understand You"

auzzy,

@LadyMarth01 65daysofstatic is the BEST.

A friend introduced me to them during college, and I've been a fan ever since.

Have you checked out their project Wreckage Systems? It's pretty interesting, and quite good IMHO.

"Joker: Folie à Deux," Todd Phillips' sequel to his 2019 movie will not be out until October this year, but GQ says you can watch a better version today. "The People's Joker" is a crowdsourced DIY project from director-cowriter-star Vera Drew about her experiences as a trans woman in comedy, and it was released last week. Here's Jesse Hassenger's breakdown of the movie, which he says, "feels like a more sincere, fully-felt act of adaptation than several 'real' treatments of these characters."

https://flip.it/Nryxfb

auzzy,

@CultureDesk I'm quite curious about this film.

Not only the movie itself, but how in the hell WB let this happen. I'm glad it did of course. IANAL, but my understanding is that not defending your copyright weakens your ability to defend it in the future.

So regardless of this movie's quality, one can hope this is the leading edge of a new wave of artists spitting in the eye of megacorps that jealously hoard their properties.

Album of the Day 197: IBM 1401 A User's Manual by Jóhann Jóhannsson

https://johannjohannsson.bandcamp.com/album/ibm-1401-a-users-manual

2006 modern classical album. Jóhannsson's father worked for IBM in the '60s working on 1401 computers, and managed to make some music using the 1401. This album combines some of recordings of that music with an orchestra, vocoded voice, and even a tape on the 1403 printer.

My picks: "Part 1/ IBM 1401 Processing Unit," "Part 5/ the Sun's Gone Dim and the Sky's Turned Black"

auzzy,

@LadyMarth01 He was such a remarkable talent gone far, FAR too soon.

Bad Times at the El Royale (2018)

I don't think I'll ever be able to unsee Chris Hemsworth, shirt open to the waist, doing a hippy dance to Hush by Deep Purple, in this movie.

This is a very dark movie, but, is also entertaining. Great visuals and stellar performances from an ensemble cast.

Also has a great 1960s soundtrack introduced through the playing of the jukebox or the singing by the character Darlene Sweet.

Recommended.

auzzy,

@fitheach I'm glad someone other than me has thought about this movie since its release!

I loved it, even seeing it twice in theaters at a time I only went out to the movies a few times a year.

One of the biggest sources for my impostor syndrome as a critic/cinephile is my dislike of certain classic films you're "supposed" to love. Ya know, the kinds of films "everyone" agrees are amongst the best ever made, or at least are widely respected.

And so I'm always delighted when a professional critic I like and respect shares my take.

This thought inspired by finding out I'm not alone in my dislike of the original Blade Runner. Sorry! ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Linux_Is_Best, to Sony

As far as I am concerned, all Sony digital content, is freeware.

If purchasing movies or Tv shows is not true ownership, so-called piracy is not theft.

auzzy,

@Linux_Is_Best If it's digital only, then sure.

But if it's available on disc, as many Sony movies and TV shows are, it's still theft. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

auzzy, to movies

Right, it's !

I'm in the US, so yesterday was Thanksgiving and I have today off from work, so it doesn't FEEL like Friday.

Been catching up on new releases, since I had a full social calendar last weekend. Still gotta catch Thanksgiving and the Hunger Games prequel, and write reviews for all of them on my Substack (https://bit.ly/austin-movies).

With Christmas coming up, my partner asked me to make a bluray wishlist, and to not buy any more. That list is almost exclusively movies I've seen and adore, so I know her money won't be going to waste.

With my own money, however, I bought a few collections containing ZERO films I've seen, but need to.

As well as the original War of the Worlds, which I haven't seen since I was a kid.

I'm excited to dig in!

auzzy, to movies

It's !

I know the news of Letterboxd's sale might put a bit of a damper on things. But until things actually get worse, I'm gonna hold out hope they won't.

The irony of the three most recent movies below is that Closed Curtain was the last of six movies I watched in six days which I gave a 4 or higher. And the one right before that I still enjoyed, despite getting a below average rating.

auzzy, to music

I've already received part of my haul from this month's Bandcamp Friday. Rather than wait until everything arrives, especially since one set of discs is tracking for mid-May, here's what I've got so far!

auzzy, to movies

Today's DVD haul! Mostly from Barnes and Noble's Criterion sale.

Picked up the Vengeance Trilogy from eBay since Oldboy isn't available to stream anywhere. Same for Manchester by the Sea.

Got a few more I'm excited about arriving later this week/next week!

auzzy, to music

This is just insane. It makes the US as a touring destination hostile to all but the biggest foreign acts.

If there's a need to raise the fees, why not do it in a way it preserves or even bolsters the ability of small bands to come through? Maybe raise the fees, but provide a pathway to apply for a waiver based on some metric (album sales? prior year revenue?) to ensure it's only available to the least popular artists.
