Below is a wonderful chart that helps folks understand fetal development. There are times I want to have it painted on sandwich board, so I can wear it everywhere I go.

I've given birth to a full-term baby; had an abortion; suffered a miscarriage. The least violent of the 3 was most assuredly the abortion. +

courtcan,
@courtcan@mastodon.social avatar

@BootsChantilly I haven't had an abortion, but I've had a miscarriage and a full-term pregnancy with delivery. At the very least, I can confirm that childbirth is incredibly violent. Childbirth does violence to the person giving birth. And that violence doesn't end with the delivery, even if it's successful. In some cases (such as mine), the violence persists for months. And can persist for years.

Abortion reached its lowest point since Roe under Obama/Biden because the goal was not to punish women, but to address inequality issues and have policies like health insurance covers birth control so that abortions wouldn’t be needed to start with.
https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2017/01/17/509734620/u-s-abortion-rate-falls-to-lowest-level-since-roe-v-wade

The "prolife" movement has shown itself to be a nauseating fraud bent on punishing low income, non-white women.

Drive time for abortions are longest in low-income, diverse areas across U.S.:

@TonyStark The best way to prevent abortions is to prevent unwanted pregnancies. And the best way to prevent unwanted pregnancies is for men to control their ejaculations.

The existence of unwanted pregnancies is entirely in the hands of men. @gabrielleblair has an excellent short book on this:

@log @Adam_Cadmon1 Just this morning I was using a pair of gloves to illustrate to 11yo how a mortgage works, in which the gloves were a house, she was the bank, and the loose change in the center console played the role of interest. I believe I did it well, since she asked questions that indicated comprehension.

But now I'm wondering... Will any of that be relevant 10 years from now? Will the rest of her life include the concept of purchasing something & actually maintaining possession of it?

Yeah, I remember when I was a teenager, 18 & 19. And that kind of help was expected of me. I was a girl

courtcan,

And no, kids shouldn't be expected to become caregivers. But "even" boys can be expected to do the laundry and wash the dishes and vacuum the floors when they live at home,.pay no rent, and their mother is taking their father to neurology appointments.

Anyway, stop making excuses for boys and men when it comes to not taking on domestic shit.

What kind of high-school experience did you have? Were you in a clique? Were you popular, unpopular, the coolest kid in your Homeschool? Did you have a sweet jean jacket with patches, or maybe a leather vest? Were you an evil villain or a Mary Sue?

courtcan,
@courtcan@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr I was an American attending German schools. The social structure was completely different from anything I'm aware of in American schools, so I don't really know how to describe it. I had friends. None of us were what might be considered popular? We definitely weren't part of the cool kids crowd. Most of us got fairly decent grades, but we weren't with the nerd crowd either. Honestly, I was suffering from undiagnosed ADHD & anxiety and was just trying to survive most of the time.

courtcan,
@courtcan@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr @elverkonge I taught my daughter at home for 2 years during the first years of the pandemic. She was enrolled in an online charter school, and most of her lessons were programs she could take herself through. But the whole system required my overseeing, I had to coach her through a lot of the material, and when it came to math I needed to be her actual teacher.

And she's an only child.

The whole experience showed very clearly that homeschooling is not for either of us.

I'm sick of justifying ethical behavior in terms of profit. We use phrases like "adding alt-text brings more customers to your site" or "protected bike lanes increase revenue for local businesses."

You should add alt-text descriptions to images because it helps people.

We need to build bike lanes because it makes cities safer and more accessible.

Reduce carbon emissions because it's the right thing to do! Discussing these things in purely economic terms misses the point.

courtcan,
@courtcan@mastodon.social avatar

@rasterweb @docpop @DEDGirl I was thinking along similar lines. So only working people should be able to drive or cycle on streets? Only working people should be able to walk on the sidewalk? Only working people should be able to use the library or enjoy the services of the fire department?

People like "sicktitz" (🙄) refuse to understand: once you remove public services from one group, you're removing them from everybody and we might as well use chamber pots & empty them in the streets.

courtcan,
@courtcan@mastodon.social avatar

@rasterweb @docpop @DEDGirl I swear I sound like a broken record to myself, but this week especially I keep running into this concept: "the purpose of a system is what it does." We are all being abused by the system, which means that is the system's purpose.

Went with my parents to their attorney, as they want me (only child) to be aware of all processes in place when they pass & I inherit.

Not things I particularly enjoy pondering, but these conversations are necessary. As a family, we've had too many situations over the past few years in which the deceased didn't make adequate plans or inform heirs of the plans, leading to all sorts of unpleasantness.

So...and I'm reminding myself as well...get & keep your affairs in order, y'all.

courtcan,

Make a will, make a trust, do whatever the things are that make the technical and legal details easier on your loved ones once you're gone. When I was a teenager, I thought it was hideously morbid that my grandma, who was by no means on death's door, had my mom help her pick out the dress she would be buried in.

This was probably in 1993 or '94, and Grandma didn't die until 2006.

Knowing what I know now, at 47, I understand the value of doing that kind of prep work. It eliminates guesswork
