One of the storiest stories I’ve ever heard: when Laos was being bombed into oblivion during the Vietnam war, an Aussie photojournalist sought asylum for his Laotian girlfriend in Thailand by.. scuba diving with her from Laos. They were sharing a breath at a time in the Mekong until they got to Thailand. Then he was put in a Thai prison (the prime minister pardoned him).

Today their child is a leading Thai actor, and a movie was made of them called ‘Love is Forever’

Project Gutenberg is on the fedi now!

They're a brilliant and fantastic, volunteer- and donation-run resource for free e-books, especially older forgotten about works which are hard to find in print.

Can't recommend them highly enough. No e-reader needed, I use my tablet in dark mode. Do check them out.

The accuracy:

"If you’re a man and that O.P. is a woman, her facts are feelings and your feelings are facts, and those forty-seven increasingly lengthy responses you fired off were clearly a rational reaction. If she reacted negatively to them, do not forget to rebuke her for being emotional."

If you start off your sentence “it’s not antisemitic to…”, chances are pretty high these days you’re about to defend something really antisemitic.

@TonyStark Or they follow it with something so anodyne it's technically true but use it to shield themselves from recognising how much unconscious cultural antisemitism is influencing the rest of what they say.

I can see why Israel rejected the final offer. The release of murderers from prison and the consequent solidification of Hamas's leadership are bad enough, but since when is the winning side in a defensive war expected to pay reparations to rebuild the aggressor without even a regime change? Imagine if WWII had ended with the Allies pouring all that money into Berlin without any alliance and propping up Donitz as Fuehrer.

This is all especially disturbing, when you consider that literally the only consideration offered by Hamas was the release of civilian hostages seized in peacetime. No reparations to the hostages or to the families of the civilians murdered on October 7th, no dismantling of military infrastructure--not even a commitment for Hamas to cease its own military operations (missile attacks on civilian populations) while Israel withdraws. All they're prepared to commit to is to stop holding some of their kidnapping victims. That's one helluva ransom demand.

@wolfsbruder Hamas' "offer" was basically Set us up to be more successful the next time we go against you and we'll give you some bodies and who knows maybe some of them will still be alive. And if you say no, we're going to tell the world you're at fault.

Death and the Penguin by Andrey Kurkov.

Quietly absurdist, yet feels well grounded in the realities of time and place (late 20th cen Ukraine). Pacing, flow and details are excellent; exceptionally well written and translated.

Don't find out more about it, wondering what is going on is part of its appeal, just read it :)

lower house passes legislation!!!!! 400 for, out of 415 present, with only 10 opposed. Support from all major parties.

There are still steps to go before it actually becomes law but the landslide means it can't be overturned.

If we're mutuals and you'd like to read it, let me know and I'll send you the link.

and i think i've narrowed my favourite scene down to oh maybe 7 choices. though if i actually count it will probably be higher.

it's 10 episodes, 24 minutes each. my count includes pretty much all of episode 3 and over half of 5, and one that extends into the next episode 😂

The concentration of it has taken far too many of my spoons, but this is my HTF did this get to be so long it’s turning into a novella story outlined in 3d form. Group and 2-3 person interactions each have a colour. Right side tabs need to happen after a certain point. Middle tabs currently in later half but can be moved - this is the purpose of doing it with index cards. Left side tabs mostly have to be early, though some could move. Loose white cards are notes on bits I want to write.

Day 21/26: A drama that was better/disappointing than expected

Only Friends
With that cast it should have been 100%. The acting was, but story & pacing were all over the place. Between the merry go round of fighting, twists, fake sex scenes (less is often more), and some truly pointless toxicity, I wasn't as invested in the characters as the actors deserved. With 5 couples + everyone else, how did so much of the 2nd half feel like the writers were just throwing things in to make it to 12 eps?

Day 22: Shortest drama completed in 2023

My Fairy Ghost 4 eps, 8 mins

Gentle love story between two women -one a confident established painter, the other a writer still struggling to find her voice- emphasising how the support of another can help you find confidence in yourself. It's ultimately about taking risks, both in love and art. As befits a story about a visual artist, there's a beautiful, sensuous love scene too, one many directors could learn from.

Day 16: Best actress of 2023

Co-writers/directors/actresses
Ward Reinalyn & Klio Manabat

Shout out and for Lei & Mar, a gentle story of two high school girls and their feelings for each other.

Klio and Ward were clever enough with their story and directing they were able to work a lot into 38 minutes without it feeling rushed or incomplete. It is really well done.

They're a couple in real life and their connection as friends and partners shines through.

Day 19: A drama that made you laugh
Day 20: A drama that made you cry

He's Coming to Me
A kind boy who can see ghosts grows up and takes a lonely one home to his uni flat, as you do.

There is so much kindness and warmth in this. It is beautiful and funny and heartbreaking and full of love.

8 hour-long episodes and well worth your time.
