now polyphase buck has gotten relatively cheap and easy to design around, I wonder what the cutoff point is where it becomes cheaper to build with multiple small phases than one big one. board area of polyphase is likely always larger but on the other hand the inductors and caps can be smaller so there's less height.

f4grx,
@f4grx@chaos.social avatar

@gsuberland you will not regret polyphase.

This demo from 2016 is less than 4 kilobytes (❗), and made my jaw drop… 😮

@metin holy cow how is that even possible?

  • shader for the graphics = 2486 bytes
  • compute shader for the sound synthesizer = 841 bytes
  • other = 761 bytes

Loved reading this article. 💚

As a youngster, I made my first Deluxe Paint pixel art on an Amiga 1000 in 1986. Coming from a Commodore 64 with a fixed palette of 16 colors, the Amiga was revolutionary at the time.

I went on to use "DPaint" professionally on a daily basis for around 10 years, creating pixel graphics for games, advertising agencies and television shows.

Turns out nuclear power is a lot more expensive than renewable power.

@billbennett all panels come from china at ridiculous undermarket prices, with government subsidies... Is that a fair comparison?

So… Big Tech is allowed to blatantly steal the work, styles and therewith the job opportunities of thousands of artists and writers without being reprimanded, but it takes similarity to the voice of a famous actor to spark public outrage about AI. 🤔

This is clearly not meant to be disassembled. Anyone have ideas? I assume the textured side has to be some kind of nut?

(It's fried and constantly trips with no load giving the "internal fault" LED code, curious what's inside and if there's any visible damage)

Rounded bolt head that doesn't look like a good entry vector

f4grx,
@f4grx@chaos.social avatar

@azonenberg It looks like a pop rivet, I would just drill it and install a screw for reassembly.

A dubious idea I have about cutting curved dovetails so a box would look like an impossible dovetail box, but would in fact have the top open on an arc rather than a diagonal slide like most impossible dovetails.
The axis of rotation is the left corner, where there's a green line.

f4grx,
@f4grx@chaos.social avatar

@mcdanlj @smellsofbikes the cover will be particularly tricky to mill to the exact dovetail travel radiuses. Much harder than the box itself, in fact. Many adjustments will be required I guess.

Properly photographing a 3.5" floppy disk for archival is annoyingly complicated. The label has THREE sides!

I've already built an automated system to take a picture of the front of a disk, but really I need to take THREE photos if I want to get the whole thing.

That means either three cameras or I need to rotate the disk 90° and then 180°, which is going to really stress the limits of my mechanical engineering skills.

f4grx,
@f4grx@chaos.social avatar

@foone Why not smaller rails, moved by a servo?

To avoid the dual camera you can put the camera on a sliding carriage moved by another servo (via a lever) to adjust the focus when imaging the side. two positions 1.75 inch apart are enough.

f4grx,
@f4grx@chaos.social avatar

@foone took the time to draw a hard to understand crap diagram. I'm sorry if thats useless.

@gsuberland @foone ferric perchloride is so old school and annoying. copper chloride is the way to go. in practice that just means hcl with a pinch of h2o2. when depleted it can be replenished with an air bubbler.
