The Greens were the biggest winners in the local elections, so why aren’t they getting fair air time? https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2024/05/07/the-greens-were-the-biggest-winners-in-the-local-elections-so-why-arent-they-getting-fair-air-time/
Proportionately, the Greens won most seats at the recent local elections, but they are denied airtime, and we get Reform instead. Why?

@fitheach@mstdn.io avatar

@HighlandLawyer
Difficult to tell for sure, but, I suspect rUK would be motivated mostly by prestige, the UN security council seat in particular. A desire to continue being "Great" expressed in political form.

The reality of that decision might take many years to sink in. Governments (parties) rarely think beyond the next election.

To-day, when we were heading to the #DogWalk we went down the ploughed & salted glen road. It was easier to walk there than the deep snow on the verges.

As we were walking down, a large 4x4 tooted at us to get out of the way.

5 mins later, we caught up with the 4x4. It was stuck in the snow on the first uphill section. I offered them my "husky" to pull them up.

Later, we found the 4x4 abandoned at the bottom of the hill.

Laugh? I nearly wet myself laughing.

Moving my website to a new platform got me thinking.

I first had my website & domain in 1998. Before that, I had webspace with ScotlandOnline.

Since 1998, I've utilised the following technologies for my website:

  • hand-coded HTML
  • my own database & scripts
  • txt2tags
  • Plone
  • Django/Mezzanine
  • Pelican (latest)

It has been a fantastic journey and learning exercise.

I recommend everyone should have their own website. Don't worry about the technology, just do it.

I refuse to apologise – in advance, in arrears or at any other time – for posting calls for the independence of my own nation, Scotland.

We can, indeed, do better.

I agree, we can do better.

However, it doesn't stop me from feeling melancholic. We are now nearly a decade on from the referendum, and it feels as though we are further away from achieving independence. I know others of our ilk who feel the same.

Sorry if this is a downer.

Got a friend to start using Element/Matrix on iOS. However, there is a problem with the installation. There is no shortcut on the home screen. To launch Element the user has to go back to the App store every time.

I can't resolve the problem because I'm not an Apple user, and I'm remote.

Any ideas?

Outlaw/King (2018)

A note about the title of this movie. It isn't "Outlaw King" as used on IMDb & Wikipedia. The title, as used in the film credits, is Outlaw/King. This indicates a very different meaning.

The film gives an accurate telling of the early years of King Robert's reign, from the surrender to England's King Edward to the Battle of Loudoun Hill.

Aside from Bruce lacking some charisma, and an odd love affair, it is a great movie.

Recommended.

I was watching the original video for "Knowing Me, Knowing You" by ABBA (bear with me, a serious point follows). The video depicts the band members (real-life couples at the time) each having a break-up. Many years later the two couples did split.

How difficult must it be to have your real-life dramatised in this way, and for the drama to come true? The price of fame, maybe. Still, can't be easy for your private life to be so public, and viewable nearly 50 years later.

I sent someone a few music tracks via email. The tracks were named: <artist>_<track>.opus

The recipient opened the email using their Android 'phone, and played the tracks.

However, the tracks weren't played from the local files. Instead, each track was "converted" to the named track on Spotify.

Wow!!!

I've taken out a VPS from Ionos (formerly 1and1). It has 1 vCore, 1 GB RAM, 10GB SSD, unlimited traffic, root access, and a choice of distros, including Debian, Ubuntu & CentOS. Plesk is also offered free, but, I've not used it.

All for the ridiculously cheap price of £1 (£1.20 incl. VAT) per month. At this price it would be rude not to test it, which is what I'm doing.

The spec is limited, but, I can think of hundreds of uses at this price point.

On a serious note: Labour have been promising abolition of the House of Lords since Keir Hardie founded the party in the late 19th century. Despite being in power numerous times since, they have never even attempted abolition.

A phrase Hardie frequently used was: "I'd rather end than mend the House of Lords".

I made 5 log cages, where I store my wood for the coming year(s). The cages are constructed from pallets and corrugated iron. Each cage has two pallets for a base. This keeps the logs off the ground. I then have two pallets on one side, and two on the other. The ends are closed with one pallet each. The cages are covered by three sheets of corrugated. The pallets let lots of air circulate.

What a totally frustrating day.

Miserable weather with storms and lashing rain. Got caught in two road closures. Electricity supply has been cut all day, which also meant no 'phone calls or Internet access.

Power, and thus Internet, now restored, but, still no 'phone calls. I needed to make some online purchases, but, couldn't receive the verification codes by SMS.

Aaaarrrrgggghhhh!

fitheach,
@fitheach@mstdn.io avatar

A note for any city folk thinking "what's the problem with road closures, just take another route".

In rural areas we have so few trunk roads that closures can mean alternative routes are enormously long. Not so long ago the A82 road was closed just two miles from my house. The suggested "diversion" route was back down the A82, across to the A9, up to Inverness, and then back down the A82 to my house. A distance of about two hundred miles. I dumped the car, and walked.
