So the Migrant Advisory Committee, after a 14 week investigation has found 'no evidence' of any deliberate abuse of the international student visa scheme;
they're coming here to study.
As the FT delicately puts it:
this has 'placed Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in a bind, forcing him to either confront those on the Conservative right who want it scrapped, or ignore the advisory group'!
Watch this space.... which way he jumps will tell us a lot about the future of the (rump of) the Tory party
Joe Biden continues to fully support the Gaza genocide because he does not believe it will hurt him politically, and because he has no empathy for the Palestinians. This is the same arrogance that brought down LBJ over the Vietnam war.
Antony Blinken claims that Hamas is blocking a ceasefire in Gaza, but it is Israel which has vowed to invade Rafah regardless of an agreement and is absolutely unwilling to declare an end to its genocidal operation.
Team Starmer & the unions have come away from their summit today all suggesting that they have reached a deal on the New Deal for Working People, which the unions assert has seen a recommitment to its original shape & goals.
From cynics corner this looks like both sides deciding this argument can wait until after the election & for now it will pay to be seen not to be squabbling...
So, if/once labour gain power, the debate on workers rights will quickly flare up (again)
So, Tesco's boss has just seen his wages for the year gone, nearly double to around £10m....
As you might get the unions are not pleased, especially when society wide wage growth is under 6% in nominal terms and essentially still flat-lining in real terms.
The Sado-monetarists of Threadneedle St. will be saying, 'aha but CEOs are a small group who work hard & don't impact inflation'; in other words: one (economic) law for us & our mates, another for you lot!
@fkamiah17 it is a country where the youth are pro eu and have little appetite for welcoming Russians into their country, but the older and elderly age groups still hark back to Soviet times. Like Serbia the Gov is very pro Russian. I nearly choked last week when the US said it was "deeply troubled" by the treatment of protesters and called for an independent investigation into reports of "harassment and physical assault". Does the US Gov not have any self awareness?
I have always adored Queen, they are my favourite band of all time and I have all their studio and live albums up to “Made In Heaven”.
That said, my favourite album of all time, from the vinyl my father played when I was very young, to the CD I ordered from eBay, is not a Queen album.
“The Butterfly Ball and the Grasshopper's Feast” is a ‘70s concept album written by Roger Glover after he left Deep Purple. Several great artists are featured on the tracks, notably:
• Glenn Hughes of Trapeze, Deep Purple, and Black Sabbath.
• Ronnie James Dio of Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Dio and Heaven & Hell.
• Jimmy Helms of Londonbeat.
• David Coverdale of Deep Purple and Whitesnake.
• John Lawton of Lucifer's Friend, Uriah Heep and the Les Humphries Singers.
• and several other great ‘70s talents!
The album follows a story based on a poem by William Roscoe, written in 1802, telling the story of a party for insects and other small animals.
The album cover design is from Alan Aldridge's design for a 1973 book based on the poem.
Rank-and-file members of UAW Labor for Palestine are demanding that their union's leadership withdraws their dues money from Israel Bonds and divest from genocide.
Israeli university presidents condemnation of the Gaza solidarity protests in the U.S. is revealing Israeli universities' complicity in occupation, apartheid, and genocide.
As youse know, I try not to share links to Xitter but this compilation of Blinken clips talking about Russia's invasion of Ukraine is really something else - he even namechecks Israel. I'll transcribe it for those who don't want to/can't click, with the link at the end.
"What separates Israel, the United States and other democracies when it comes to incredibly difficult situations like this is our respect for international law.
The BoE will be (I should think) suggesting interest rates should not go down yet, after ONS reported wage rises remained at 5.7% over the last 3 months.
But, a focus on nominal wages is misleading; it takes no account of inflation adjusted real wages, that continue to lag behind pre-austerity levels & so by only focussing on recent months underplays (obscures) that wages are catching up previous loses....
So prepare for a longer wait for interest rates to drop
I thought it was Palestinian parents who indoctrinated their children to hate Israelis 🤔
I should say these images (stills from a video clip) were taken at Tarqumiyah crossing in Hebron yesterday. The police protected the "activists".
@fkamiah17@BashStKid they start at pre school age. I’ve seen and heard it with my own eyes and ears from extended family and their friends. What’s worrying is the largest group of Israeli Jews are secular, so this is not religion driven but sheer ethnic racism. It is one of the reasons that I will never set foot in Israel again. I may be Jewish, but it is not and never will be my ‘home’ and I have nothing but contempt for its Gov and apartheid laws
This needs signatures, almost at 10,000 where the government have to respond.

It's quite funny to look back and realize LLMs are basically what people in the 80s that didn't understand computers, thought computers were all about.
" ... it seems clear – to me, at least – that both Labour and the Conservatives are in the narrative business, as distinct from the business of good governance"
@fkamiah17 That's right - I was hunting round for some similar ideas. The closest I found was some around break ups of and betrayals in relationships (I suppose this has some relevance here if we consider the relationship between citizen and government).
