@dansup another issue seems to be what might be known as "backfill" of posts on smaller servers. from pixelfed.social, a new user can see posts dating back years, but on exposur.es and others, it looks like pixelfed is a ghost town which makes pitching it nearly impossible. nobody follows someone on a whim—they follow someone because they skim their feed and find it interesting enough to want to see more, right? fixing this would go a long way in making pixelfed more appealing & usable.

one the thing people outside of NYC don't understand about NYC is that the NYPD can and regularly does deploy hundreds of pigs to whatever they want on a whim

even a city as big as Los Angeles only has ≈20,000 between LAPD and LASD combined. NYPD has over 36,000

that's more than three Chicago PD's…

@guenther @WolfIsMe @meganecko same results for Safari, but The Trevor Project could solve this on the back end by eliminating data collection / telemetry / tracking technologies on their entire site or at least the support page.

and as you pointed out, this assumes the network and device aren't being monitored.

i really luv their intent here, but this has me wanting to chew on this more to find a more fireproof solution. thanks for flagging y'all!

@guenther @WolfIsMe @meganecko right, that's what i'm getting at. it solves half the equation because clearing history doesn't clear website data, but if their web data is never placed, it eliminates those additional steps.

from there, it's all about finding alternative ways to purge the other breadcrumbs in case a private browsing mode wasn't used or can't be because it's disabled.

just passing along some friendly life experience here: whatever you do out there in your activism or organizing, don't feel pressured to get arrested.

even some of the most sensible people will feel it's their duty to go down taking one for the team yet that's so not the case. believe me on this.

arrests—and everything that comes with them, from the incredibly high likelihood of permanent injury to the legal consequences—only deplete our resources and aid the enemy.

@b9AcE it sounds like there's a drastically healthier culture there compared to most places i've been.

here in new york, for example, despite the foreknowledge & awareness of inevitable police brutality that's led to permanent injury & loss of consciousness, and post-action police raids or door-knocks, the practice of wearing protective gear or even masking your identity is seen as weakness or not being chill.

it's as if getting arrested & assaulted is a rite of passage somehow.

what's tough tho is convincing ppl that this radical change is in everyday things like wearing a mask on public transit or using cash or switching to 24-hour time and the metric system or setting boundaries to preserve your privacy (and theirs) by asking that ppl to msg you over signal instead of an unsafe SMS group chat / instagram / whatsapp or just talking to your neighbors.

If you want many eyes on your open source project, you need to get rid of assholes.

Bad community management is a security risk.

Assholes bully sole maintainers.
Assholes gatekeep and keep maintainer numbers low.
Assholes waste time on the mailing list with petty bullshit.
If you fundraise, assholes are bullying your grant writers and community managers.

Some of the best security contributors don't write a single line of code. They yeet assholes.

@toba @beadsland the unfortunate reality is that the abandonment of mitigation efforts and media push to trivialize the severity was orchestrated by the white house. i think it’s high time we take these efforts local. we’d make a far greater impact working with our circles to shift the tide than petitions or marches.

let’s get our favorite coffee shops or bars on board and watch it spread from there.

    important to distinguish between recognizing the sovereignty of a people within a specific geography (the way indigenous people organize) and recognizing a population within firmly defined borders with a governmental body that agrees to the obligations & meets the metrics of a white patriarchal dominant society (the way the UN is organized)
