I would love an IDE made for for general use and also extensible. It would be great.

I'm not a developer, but isn't it possible to improve Builder to make it more generic?

It must be a lot of work, but probably less than creating a new IDE from scratch? 🤔

Do you use #smb or #nfs to connect to your #nas on #linux?

gnomelibre,
@gnomelibre@mamot.fr avatar

@amadeus

With large SMB transfers, there was always a moment when it failed. I now use SSHFS, which works like a charm.

Why is it that in modern OSes we have to stick with the original format when saviing files with the OS dialogue?
Isn't it an easy task to convert say a JPEG to PNG? I'm a user btw.

@Junicast

I'm not sure I understand the question, but Switcheroo makes it easy to convert images.

And more recently there is also Morphosis for document conversion.

Folks who might be looking to move from Windows to Linux: another option, if it’s financially feasible for you and you don’t want to mess with installing Linux, is to sell your Windows machine and buy a Linux one.

Yep, they exist.

Folks like @starlabs in the UK, @tuxedocomputers in the EU, and @system76 in the US sell Linux machines that just work out of the box.

If I were to buy a new laptop with some version of newbie friendly linux preloaded, intending to use it for music and graphics arts (not gaming), social media, and regular LibreOffice type stuff (and affinity, audacity, etc), what laptop would I buy with what version of linux?

gnomelibre,

@shekinahcancook

For this type of activity, I don't think there's one Linux distribution better than another.

What kind of features would you be willing to pay for in a potential official online account?

I'd love to have a way to save all my settings + extensions with their settings and import them all back with one click after doing a clean install.

gnomelibre,
@gnomelibre@mamot.fr avatar

@forteller

With SaveDesktop you can save your current configuration (themes, icons, wallpapers, all desktop environment settings, extensions, Flatpak, etc.) on a USB key or external disk, then import it after a clean install 🙂

Plus aucun des outils de capture d'écran que j'ai ne prend le curseur de la souris....

Pas pratique pour documenter une fonction de drag & drop... Je crois que je vais ajouter la curseur avec GIMP 🤣

gnomelibre,
@gnomelibre@mamot.fr avatar

@John_Livingston @dimitri

Who should be software packaging is a tough problem, I can see the value in distros pushing for better changes downstream, encouraging upstream to change (double click in ) but then I see cases like KeepassXC where the Debian package is now by default broken, actively damaging the reputation of upstream but then I remember where upstream was left unchecked and hid bad code in plain sight and I go back around in a circle.

gnomelibre,
@gnomelibre@mamot.fr avatar

@BrodieOnLinux

Linux distributions should limit themselves to only offering an operating system and no longer deal with (graphical) user applications. Especially now that we have Flatpak.

This would give them more resources to increase the support life of their distributions, which would undoubtedly be much more useful.
