In 1978, Isaac Asimov judged a local contest and deemed this entry to be the best out of 12,000:

The bustard’s an exquisite fowl,
With minimal reason to growl:
He escapes what would be
Illegitimacy
By grace of a fortunate vowel.

gorhendad_oldbuck,

@mrundkvist I learned very recently, via a TV quiz show, that bustards are notable for quite extreme sexual dimorphism, which means that the males are big bustards and the females are wee bustards.

@Virginicus Very good, although I would also mention for context that “D.Phil” is the Oxford version of what most other universities call a PhD.

The senate finished voting around 9pm, which gives the president about 3 hours to receive, sign, and return the bill before funding for the federal government expires at midnight.

How does this actually work? I'm imagining there's some clerk on the Senate floor furiously re-installing drivers for a frozen-up printer, or perhaps searching for an unexpired cyan toner cartridge in time to get a printout ready to drive down to the White House before the deadline.

Serious question - across your digital libraries (videos, books and music) how many works have you used more than once?

For that matter of your physical books/cds/albums/Blu-ray’s etc how many get multiple uses?

For me - primarily tabletop rpg related works that I refer to many times or for fewer works business or technical related books or resources that I refer to. Also chess related books and some references like dictionaries (but less often though I bought a new French/English this week

gorhendad_oldbuck,

@Rycaut Like you I don’t worry about my digital books, even the drm’ed ones. Books I particularly value, I buy physically. Ebooks are usually for one-off light reading. I don’t worry so much about losing access to my streaming music as I do about losing my streaming playlists, as they represent a significant effort on my part.

@Teri_Kanefield It’s not a holiday that brings back nostalgic childhood memories for me, doubtless because I grew up in Glasgow, not California. Eating in a damp, cold wasp-magnet never appealed :-)

Anyone else find that advanced web on Windows 10, in a browser, eats up so much processor & memory, it grinds to a halt and needs to have it's window closed and reopened multiple times? or is it just me? this has happened with both Chrome and Firefox, becoming noticeable in the past 6 weeks, and it's only happening in the Mastodon tab, I close that down, every other tab works fine, I've got 4 tabs open so it's not that. perplexing and frustrating

    gorhendad_oldbuck,

@josephramoney It certainly does on Linux. I have to kill the mastodon tab regularly.

So today @Teri_Kanefield put up an analysis of the problematic legal issues surrounding a gag order for Trump >>> https://law-and-politics.online/

Rather than learn from Ms. Kanefield's vast expertise in these matters, some responses gave vent to their anger against Trump by accusing her of taking his side etc.

Listen up. Mastodon is not a cheering squad. Most of us value honest in-depth facts, even if uncomfortable, and we treasure those who contribute their time and expertise to keeping us informed.

The 1.5C temperature rise wasn't supposed to be reached for 50 years - now they say we may reach it this year - 2023!

Earth is hurtling towards its average temperature rising by 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels. One climate model suggests that the likelihood of reaching that threshold in 2023 is now 55%.

Back in 1956 J.R.R. Tolkien had already discovered why a walk is so important for your mental health.

"Even an afternoon walk may have important effects [...] For if there is anything in a journey of sufficient length it is this: a deliverance from the plantlike state of helpless passive sufferer, an exercise however small of will, and mobility – and of curiosity, without which a rational mind becomes stultified."

Just saw what looked to be a satellite, but it appeared to resemble two very closely packed dots instead of one. Like maybe twice the width apart than the xamidimura constellation. Checked, ISS isn't due to pass over for another half an hour, and it's on the other half of the sky.

Two craft undergoing rendezvous maybe? it was certainly something in orbit because it was going in a straight line at a constant speed. Probably a little slower than the ISS.

Roughly 6:14pm AEST, Hobart TAS, going south-westerly to north-westerly.
