"For the generation that included #Jewish#literary heavyweights like Bernard Malamud, Saul Bellow and Alfred Kazin, college attendance, especially at public institutions like New York’s City College, became commonplace. Meanwhile, pro-Nazi organizations like the German-American Bund enjoyed alarming popularity, and xenophobic immigration clampdowns reminded recent arrivals that they were barely tolerated. As #American#Jews put the dire economic straits of Yezierska’s generation behind them, new obstacles to feeling at home in America arose — and new #novels addressed them."
"...A BRIEF TOUR OF THE BROAD HORIZON: WORLD-WIDE HYPER-CRISIS
I intend this essay to be...a pointer to how it could fit together into not only a renewal of Judaism but a transformation of it — of us. That...could meet our own needs and the needs of a multi-level, worldwide crisis.
In some countries, the crisis of globalization has so tormented parts of the people who feel excluded from it that they have turned to hyper-nationalism.
...The long-powerful communities — white, Christian, and male — are also entitled to a place and shared power in an expanded democracy. They are not entitled to exclude the newly visible communities, as some politicians have trumpeted with a silver trumpet often made of cash and contempt, not a sacred shofar.
The result of all this: Two world-wide crises: the Democracy Crisis and the Climate/ Extinction Crisis..."
"It’s #Jewish#American Heritage Month, and what better way to celebrate our heritage than #children’s #books about #food? Because everyone, no matter what, can agree that Jewish food is the best.
These books feature diverse and surprising tales about Jewish food, from Ashkenazi classics to Asian and Mexican mash-ups."
"We’ve started a tracker to keep tabs on the #Kosher, #Jewish, and #Israeli-owned r#estaurants (kosher and not kosher) that have been attacked or vandalized since October 7th, 2023.
Surely, #antisemitism existed before the #Hamas attacks, and many of these types of businesses have been attacked prior, but we’ve seen a ramping up of these targeted attacks since October."
"#Toronto police say they're looking for suspects who allegedly shot at a #Jewish girls school, the Bais Chaya Mushka Girls Elementary School of Toronto , in North York Saturday morning."
In Egypt, a piece of Jewish pottery suggests a woman’s role that was stolen from history - Rabbi Jill Hammer May 23, 2024
"...While the Temple in Jerusalem is the only Jewish temple mentioned in the Bible, there were other Jewish temples, including one in the Egyptian city of Elephantine. Built in the 6th century BCE and destroyed in 410 BCE by priests of the Egyptian god Khnum, the temple was a place where local Jews, often Israelite soldiers hired by Egypt, could offer sacrifices. According to some scholars, the description of the temple at Elephantine is similar to the mishkan, or tabernacle, described in the book of Exodus.
One of the interesting features of this community, aside from that it performed Jewish sacrifices outside of Jerusalem, is the presence of female functionaries in the temple..."

There is still time to register to join Sheryl Sandberg and National Council of Jewish Women CEO Sheila Katz on Tuesday, May 28th, at 8:15pm ET, for a Jewish Community Conversation about the importance of bearing witness, lifting up the silenced voices of the October 7th attack, and demanding justice.
Screams Before Silence, led by Sheryl Sandberg, is a powerful documentary that captures first-person testimony from survivors, first responders, forensic experts, eyewitnesses, and released hostages from the attack by Hamas in Israel on October 7th. Their harrowing accounts reveal the uncompromising truth: Hamas used sexual assault as a weapon of war.
This is the common phrase we Israelis use when speaking of our sons and daughters returning from captivity or expressing the wish for that to happen.
This is a very respectful and common phrase you can use when communicating with Israelis or Hebrew speakers on the subject.
Now, these days we are witnessing the return of kidnapped Israelis to be buried rather than live their lives.
Each news of another body being returned for burial is heartbreaking. However, in Jewish and Israeli culture, there is great significance to having a burial and a body returned to its homeland.
As horrific as all of this is, there may be some consolation to the families who are able to have a place of burial in Israel for their loved ones.
"Security concerns relating to the situation in the Middle East have forced Kraków’s annual #Jewish festival, which is one of the largest in #Europe, to cancel the public concert that is normally the centrepiece of the event. The decision was made after consultation with the police.
The Jewish Culture Festival has been taking place since 1988 and is seen as an emblem of the revival of Jewish life and culture in a country where Jews once made up 10% of the population but were almost completely wiped out in the #Holocaust."
For over a century, the strange, oily gloop has graced #kosher restaurants, holiday #cookbooks and hand-scribbled recipe cards in Jewish homes across the nation, becoming a (contested) symbol of Jewish American identity and #culinary tradition."
Edit: Since this article the staff have walked out in protest of the Jewish portion of the exhibit and the Wing Luke Museum remains closed while the parties meet and discuss the situation.
"A new exhibit opening May 22 at the #WingLukeMuseum of the Asian Pacific American Experience explores how three Seattle communities – Black, Asian-American, and Jewish – have faced prejudice, both in the past and in the face of rising hate crimes today.
Called “Confronting Hate Together,” the exhibit was created as a partnership between the museum, the Washington State #Jewish Historical Society, and the Black Heritage Society of Washington State."
#POTUS#Biden said #Israel’s #military assault in #Gaza after the #Hamas#Oct7 attacks “is not genocide.” “We reject that,” he said, telling an audience of #Jewish ldrs & activists Americans “stand with Israel.”
Partially correct in that #Israel is not a member of #ICC.
But ICC has jurisdiction over many countries. Its warrants remains effective there, just as the one against #Putin for his #WarCrimes in #Ukraine that is hindering his free travel.
>> decision to seek arrest warrants… is retribution against Israel for the original [sin] of existing as a #Jewish State
>> decision to seek arrest warrants… is retribution against Israel for the original [sin] of existing as a #Jewish State
The reason #Torres is completely unhinged here is because ICC prosecutor ALSO said that he had “reasonable grounds to believe” that #Sinwar, #Deif & #Haniyeh were responsible for “#warCrimes and #crimesAgainstHumanity” — including “the killing of hundreds of #Israeli civilians in attacks perpetrated by #Hamas”
The Greek Jewish Festival in NYC is today, which means making my annual guess at how many delicious borekas I can eat there without my wheat intolerance kicking the daylights out of me. Woohoo! 😀 Check out the festival if you're in the area!
#art#history: o, the ignominy of admitting that i'm not extremely intimate with the oeuvre of my subject...
still, she sounds so rad that i had to make sketchy ode to adrienne rich (born #otd in 1929). an essayist & poet who centred the oppression of women & lesbians in her work, adrienne was also a jewish pro-palestinian activist involved with the new #jewish agenda who supported the #BDS movement. #adrienneRich#illustration#poetry#freePalestine#ceasefireNow#feminism
